Ecclesiastical Economics: Some Financial Considerations Of Mormon Settlement In Illinois, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

This article discusses financial aspects of Mormon settlements in Illinois between 1839 and 1846. Almost all discussion concerning Mormons during this time is limited to the city of Nauvoo itself although, Mormon contact in Illinois extended far beyond the city. Research about Mormon settlements outside the city often fails to relate the importance of these settlements to the success of Nauvoo. Nauvoo was plagued by shortages of hard currency and food. The need for lumber and grain mills to accommodate its explosive growth was constant. These economic realities drove many of the decisions concerning Mormon settlement and overshadowed the religious …

Groundwater Quality And Its Health Impact: An Assessment Of Dental Fluorosis In Rural Inhabitants Of The Main Ethiopian Rift, Tewodros Rango, Julia Kravchenko, Behailu Atlaw, Peter G. Mccornick, Marc Jeuland, Brittany Merola, Avner Vengosh

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

This study aims to assess the link between fluoride content in groundwater and its impact on dental health in rural communities of the Ethiopian Rift. A total of 148 water samples were collected from two drainage basins within the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). In the Ziway-Shala basin in particular, wells had high fluoride levels (mean: 9.4 ± 10.5 mg/L; range: 1.1 to 68 mg/L), with 48 of 50 exceeding the WHO drinking water guideline limit of 1.5 mg/L. Total average daily intake of fluoride from drinking groundwater (calculated per weight unit) was also found to be six times higher than …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) is a well-recognized functional gastrointestinal disorder in children but its presentation is poorly understood in adults. Genetic differences in pediatric-onset (presentation before age 18) and adult-onset CVS have been reported recently but their clinical features and possible differences in response to therapy have not been well studied.

Methods

This was a retrospective review of 101 CVS patients seen at the Medical College of Wisconsin between 2006 and 2008. Rome III criteria were utilized to make the diagnosis of CVS.

Results

Our study population comprised of 29(29%) pediatric-onset and 72 (71%) adult-onset CVS patients. Pediatric-onset …

The Influence Of Strata On The Nutrient Recycling Within A Tropical Certified Organic Coffee Production System, F. Mamani-Pati, D. E. Clay, S. A. Clay, H. Smeltkop, M. A. Callata Jan 2012

The Influence Of Strata On The Nutrient Recycling Within A Tropical Certified Organic Coffee Production System, F. Mamani-Pati, D. E. Clay, S. A. Clay, H. Smeltkop, M. A. Callata

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

In tropical Bolivia coffee plantations, the plant community can be separated into high (trees), middle (coffee), and low (weed) strata. Understanding the importance of each stratum is critical for improving the sustainability of the system. The objective of this study was to determine the importance of strata on nutrient recycling. Litter falls from the upper and middle strata were collected monthly using cone-shaped traps and divided by species into leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits. Dry biomass additions to the soil from high and middle strata totaled 12,655 kg (ha yr)−1 annually. About 76% of the biomass was provided by …
