Background: Vaccines are the most effective public health intervention. Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) provides routine vaccination in developing countries. However, vaccines that cannot be given in EPI schedule such as typhoid fever vaccine need alternative venues. In areas where school enrolment is high, schools provide a cost effective opportunity for vaccination. Prior to start of a school-based typhoid vaccination program, interviews were conducted with staff of educational institutions in two townships of Karachi, Pakistan to collect baseline information about the school system and to plan a typhoid vaccination program. Data collection teams administered a structured questionnaire to all schools …

Incorporating Quantitative Reasoning In Common Core Courses: Mathematics For The Ghost Map, John R. Jungck
Incorporating Quantitative Reasoning In Common Core Courses: Mathematics For The Ghost Map, John R. Jungck
Numeracy
How can mathematics be integrated into multi-section interdisciplinary courses to enhance thematic understandings and shared common readings? As an example, four forms of quantitative reasoning are used to understand and critique one such common reading: Steven Berlin Johnson’s "The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic - and How it Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World" (Riverhead Books, 2006). Geometry, statistics, modeling, and networks are featured in this essay as the means of depicting, understanding, elaborating, and critiquing the public health issues raised in Johnson’s book. Specific pedagogical examples and resources are included to illustrate applications and …

The Rise And Fall Of The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Thoams R. Cole
The Rise And Fall Of The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Thoams R. Cole
Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)
This talk will outline the history of the doctor-patient relationship in the West. It will touch briefly on medicine in Greek and Roman antiquity, using key texts from Hippocrates and Galen. It will also sketch the changing balance of the religious and the secular in medieval medicine. Finally, it will outline the rise of the modern personal doctor-patient relationship in the 18th century and analyze the chronic dissatisfaction that settled over relations between doctors and patients in the last quarter of the 20th century.

Stable Coexpression Of Vitamin C Enhancing Genes For Improved Production Of A Recombinant Therapeutic Protein, Hil-12, In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Jessica Patricia Yactayo-Chang
Stable Coexpression Of Vitamin C Enhancing Genes For Improved Production Of A Recombinant Therapeutic Protein, Hil-12, In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Jessica Patricia Yactayo-Chang
Student Theses and Dissertations
Human interleukin-12 (hIL-12) has been studied as a potential therapeutic factor in the immune response against viral disease and cancer. Plants are a promising platform for the production of complex mammalian proteins, as they can produce large amounts of functional polypeptides free of animal pathogens, and protein production can be increased to agricultural scale in a relatively short period of time. The presence of vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AsA) has been reported to have a positive effect on recombinant protein recovery. In a previous study we have demonstrated the favorable impact of the exogenous addition of AsA on the accumulation …

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome And Novel Gene Arrangement Of The Unique-Headed Bug Stenopirates Sp. (Hemiptera: Enicocephalidae), Hu Li, Hui Liu, Aimin Shi, Pavel Stys, Xuguo Zhou, Wanzhi Cai
Entomology Faculty Publications
Many of true bugs are important insect pests to cultivated crops and some are important vectors of human diseases, but few cladistic analyses have addressed relationships among the seven infraorders of Heteroptera. The Enicocephalomorpha and Nepomorpha are consider the basal groups of Heteroptera, but the basal-most lineage remains unresolved. Here we report the mitochondrial genome of the unique-headed bug Stenopirates sp., the first mitochondrial genome sequenced from Enicocephalomorpha. The Stenopirates sp. mitochondrial genome is a typical circular DNA molecule of 15, 384 bp in length, and contains 37 genes and a large non-coding fragment. The gene order differs substantially from …

The Awarding Of The Copley Medal And The ‘Discovery’ Of The Law Of Conservation Of Energy: Joule, Mayer And Helmholtz Revisited, David Cahan
Department of History: Faculty Publications
This article analyses the awarding of the Royal Society’s Copley Medal to James Prescott Joule (1870), Julius Robert Mayer (1871) and Hermann Helmholtz (1873) in the wake of the establishment of the law of conservation of energy during the 1850s and 1860s. It seeks to reconstruct the context in which the awards occurred, emphasizing at once a combination of individual scientific achievement, advocacy on behalf of Joule’s supporters, nationalism, and the special role that Helmholtz played thanks to the strong social relationship that he had developed with the British scientific elite in the two decades before receiving his award, the …

An Examination Of The Law, Or Lack Thereof, In Refugee And Displacement Camps, Kelsey Kofford
An Examination Of The Law, Or Lack Thereof, In Refugee And Displacement Camps, Kelsey Kofford
UC Law SF International Law Review
When people envision refugee and displacement camps, rarely do they conjure up images or symbols of justice. There are no courthouses, no judges, no attorney offices, and no actual law enforcement in their virtual depictions - and with good reason. In reality, there is little to no access to justice in camplife. Refugee and displacement camps are essentially lawless. This Note endeavors to answer why there is no legal infrastructure in camps by examining the rise of the camp model, the law on the books versus the law in action in camps, and some on-the-ground problems that occur and inhibit …
Building Baby’S Tiny Bones: Formulas And Mother’S Milk Analyzed In Animal Study, Marcia Wood, Jin-Ran Chen, Aline Andres
Building Baby’S Tiny Bones: Formulas And Mother’S Milk Analyzed In Animal Study, Marcia Wood, Jin-Ran Chen, Aline Andres
Agricultural Research Magazine
For millions of American infants, a bottle of warm, soy-based baby formula is what’s for dinner. It’s also what’s for breakfast, lunch, and all those between-meal feedings, as well.
At least, that’s the routine for a healthy, soy-fed baby’s first few months of life. After that, baby may be ready to handle solid food—puréed fruits and vegetables, for instance.
At the USDA-ARS Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center in Little Rock, principal investigator Jin-Ran Chen, M.D., is taking a close look at the effects that soy formula, cow’s-milk formula, and mother’s milk have in regard to development of strong, healthy bones. As …

Nutrient Data In Time For The New Year, Rosalie Marion Bliss, Joanne Holden

Federal rules published in 2010 require specific meat and poultry products to carry new nutrition information starting January 2, 2012. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that the new rules will make important nutrition information readily available to consumers on 40 of the most popular cuts of meat and poultry. Two timely data sets provided by the Agricultural Research Service’s Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) in Beltsville, Maryland, are being used by the beef and pork industries to provide the new Nutrition Facts labels for their products.
Previously, NDL researchers, in collaboration with representatives of the beef and pork …
A Rough, Tough Forage For Rangeland Cattle, Ann Perry
A Rough, Tough Forage For Rangeland Cattle, Ann Perry
Agricultural Research Magazine
Forage kochia (Kochia prostrata) is a shrubby Asian native that has found a new home on western U.S. rangelands. And although it is not invasive, it is still sometimes more resilient than the North American native plants.
“In some rangeland soils, it’s difficult to successfully reseed with native plants,” says geneticist Blair Waldron, who works at the Agricultural Research Service’s Forage and Range Research Laboratory in Logan, Utah. “But we’ve shown that forage kochia can be established to enhance rangelands and compete with cheatgrass successfully. It can even protect against wildfires. Some people said that livestock won’t eat …

Epidemiology And Innate Immune Monocyte Function Of Staphylococcus Aureus Carriers And Non-Carriers In A Medical School Community: A Pilot Study, Catherine Molina Dailey
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine host risk factors and measure innate immune function in order to assess their potential associations with carriage of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Nearly a third of individuals worldwide are carriers of S. aureus. These bacteria usually exist as harmless commensal organisms of the skin or mucosa, most frequently in the anterior nares. Some people are persistently colonized with S. aureus while other people are intermittently or never colonized. If S. aureus gains access to underlying tissues or to the bloodstream, it can cause serious life-threatening infections, and colonization with S. aureus …
