A Comparative Review Of “How To” Books For Parents Of Adhd Children And “How To” Books For Parents Of Typical Children, Bora Pajo, Paul H. Stuart Dr.

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Although an increasing number of children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and take medications to control their behaviors, a well-publicized controversy persists about whether ADHD refers to a common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood or to various medicalized temperamental, educational, and cultural differences and difficulties of children. Moreover, behaviors indicative of ADHD are commonly found among all children—although with different frequencies. This paper aims to identify and compare the type of information provided to parents of ADHD and non-ADHD diagnosed children through readily available self-help books. Searches using popular online bookstores were conducted to rank and select the …

Reducing Endophyte-Related Economic Losses, Don Ball Jan 2012

Reducing Endophyte-Related Economic Losses, Don Ball

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Tall fescue is native to Europe and was rarely planted in the United States until after the first four decades of the 20th century. However, since the release of the variety ‘Kentucky 31’ in 1943, this versatile cool season perennial grass has been widely planted for forage, turf, and conservation purposes, with most of the acreage planted consisting of this variety. “Fescue” has many attributes including wide adaptation, easy establishment, a long growing season, good forage and seed yield, and tolerance of a wide range of management conditions.

Cost Analysis Of Cattle Feedlot Designs, J.M. Mrozinski, R.H. Pritchard, B.P. Holland, G.W. Warmann Jan 2012

Cost Analysis Of Cattle Feedlot Designs, J.M. Mrozinski, R.H. Pritchard, B.P. Holland, G.W. Warmann

South Dakota Beef Report, 2012

A cost analysis of fixed and non-fixed costs of gain was conducted on 3 cattle feedlot designs. The three facility designs compared were conventional open pens (OPN), open pens with shelter over the feeding area (OS), and a monoslope confinement barn (MON). The OPN design was the least expensive facility to build and operate. However, because of poorer cattle performance (P < 0.05), it was not the most cost effective. The MON design had significantly higher operating costs when compared to the OPN or OS designs, especially for the tractor/spreader (P < 0.05), skid loader (P < 0.10), labor (P < 0.05), and straw (P < 0.05). The operating and fixed costs, combined, made the MON design the most expensive cost of gain design (P < 0.05). The OS design was the most expensive facility to build but with current feed prices and the cattle performance, it was the most cost effective cattle feeding design.

The minimum coverage provision does not require individuals to purchase any unique product or service but rather requires a standardized financial contribution to the national healthcare infrastructure from all legal residents who are able to pay – a kind of requirement that has never been found unduly or even unusually restrictive of individual liberty.

One purpose of the individual mandate is to eliminate the market for self-insured healthcare transactions. It is well-established in this Court’s precedent that the elimination of an interstate commercial market is a constitutionally legitimate end for Congress to pursue under the Commerce Clause. Under the Necessary and Proper Clause, Congress may use any reasonably adapted means to accomplish constitutionally legitimate ends. The individual mandate is not only reasonably adapted but is quite elegant as a means of eliminating the market for self-insured healthcare transactions. The provision effectively encourages individuals to shift from the inefficient market for self-insured care to its …

Relationship Between Fat Content And Ne Values For Some Ethanol Byproducts, R. Pritchard, E. Loe, T. Milton

South Dakota Beef Report, 2012

A finishing phase study was conducted to measure the impact of the fat content of ethanol byproducts on the relative Net Energy values for these feedstuffs. The three feedstuffs with varying crude fat content used included a commercially available corn gluten feed corn distillers grains blend (CGD); a corn wet distillers grains without solubles (WDG); and corn wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS). Byproducts were incorporated as 40% of the finishing diets (DM basis) replacing corn and SBM components of the control (CO) diet. There were 6 pens of 7 or 8 yearling steers on each treatment during the 130 …

A Goal Setting Intervention Positively Impacts Adolescents’ Dietary Behaviors And Physical Activity Self-Efficacy, Mical Kay Shilts, Marilyn S. Townsend Jan 2012

A Goal Setting Intervention Positively Impacts Adolescents’ Dietary Behaviors And Physical Activity Self-Efficacy, Mical Kay Shilts, Marilyn S. Townsend

Journal of Youth Development

The efficacy of a youth development intervention on improving eating and physical activity(PA) self-efficacy, goal attainment scaling, goal effort, and behaviors was examined in a repeated measures, quasi-experimental field trial. Ethnically diverse students (n=64) from a low-income middle school participated in the 10-session intervention driven by the Social Cognitive Theory with a Goal Setting Theory emphasis. Participants, 13-14 years old, made significant changes in dietary behaviors ( P=0.03) and PA self-efficacy (P=0.02) after receiving the intervention. Self-efficacy did not mediate dietary behavior change but did mediate the small changes made in PA. Goal effort was not a mediator of behavior …

Human Trafficking And The Health Care Provider, Patricia A. Crane Jan 2012

Human Trafficking And The Health Care Provider, Patricia A. Crane

Biennial Convention (CONV)

This presentation will address the global and domestic human trafficking. An estimated 20,000 people are trafficked within the U.S. each year, while millions may be trafficked internationally. Trafficking victims are forced, defrauded and coerced into labor and sexual service for profit of others. Traffickers use individual vulnerabilities and immigration status, language ability and poor understanding of U.S. laws to identify future victims. Health care professionals need contemporary and updated information and resources about health risks, screening methods, and identification of trafficked person. Common medical problems will be reviewed and health care needs in different phases of trafficking. Legal and health …

Using Ethnography To Build Knowledge: Informal Caregivers Providing Care At The End-Of-Life, Gwen Mcghan, Janice Penrod, Brenda L. Baney Jan 2012

Using Ethnography To Build Knowledge: Informal Caregivers Providing Care At The End-Of-Life, Gwen Mcghan, Janice Penrod, Brenda L. Baney

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Research into issues related to end-of-life care has grown exponentially over the past decade, yet the science under-girding practice remains under developed. Several national consensus panels have addressed the development of strategic initiatives to advance the state of the science, confirming the need for research into the experiences of informal caregivers providing end-of-life care and the derivation of theory-driven, research-based interventions to meet their needs. To help address this gap, ethnographic methods were used to understand the influences of the prevailing values and beliefs, or the culture of care, on formal caregivers' recognition and response to informal caregivers' feelings of …

Pregnant Women With Diabetes: Health Problems, Apn Interventions In 2 Models Of Apn Transitional Care, Dorothy Brooten, Donna Felber, Jean Hannan Jan 2012

Pregnant Women With Diabetes: Health Problems, Apn Interventions In 2 Models Of Apn Transitional Care, Dorothy Brooten, Donna Felber, Jean Hannan

Biennial Convention (CONV)

The purpose of this presentation is to examine differences in type and frequency of health problems and advanced practice nurse (APN) interventions between 2 models of APN provided prenatal care in pregnant women with diabetes. In one model, APN care was added to physician prenatal care (additive). In the second, half of physician prenatal care was substituted with APN prenatal care in women's homes (substitution). For pregnant women with diabetes, maintaining diets and blood sugar levels is challenging. The literature lacks data on health problems from the women's perspectives and if provider responses differ by model of care delivery.

From Controversy To Coherence: Implementing A Dnp/Phd Partnership Model To Improve Researchâ And Evidence-Based Practice, Elizabeth Nesmith, Regina Medeiros

Biennial Convention (CONV)

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) role was developed in part to partner with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) nurse researchers to inform and implement new discoveries in nursing science. The advent of the DNP program was met with much public controversy, including questions surrounding how the role would be implemented in the hospital setting. The concept has been very popular among nurses however, and has seen exponential growth with no concomitant development of models to guide role implementation. As of 2009, there were 5,165 students enrolled in 120 DNP programs across …

A Prototype Head-Motion Monitoring System For In-Home Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy, Pamela T. Bhatti, Susan J. Herdman, Siddarth Datta Roy, Courtney D. Hall, Ronald J. Tusa

ETSU Faculty Works

This work reports the use of a head-motion monitoring system to record patient head movements while completing in-home exercises for vestibular rehabilitation therapy. Based upon a dual-axis gyroscope (yaw and pitch, ± 500-degrees/sec maximum), angular head rotations were measured and stored via an on-board memory card. The system enabled the clinician to document exercises at home. Several measurements were recorded in one patient with unilateral vestibular hypofunction: The total time of exercise for the week (118 minutes) was documented and compared with expected weekly exercise time (140 minutes). For gaze stabilization exercises, execution time of 60 sec was expected, and …
