Reliability Of Agricultural Statistics In Developing Countries: Reflections From A Comprehensive Village Survey On Crop Area Statistics In India, Gopal Naik, K P Basavaraj, V R Hegde, Vijay Paidi, Arjunan Subramanian Apr 2012

Reliability Of Agricultural Statistics In Developing Countries: Reflections From A Comprehensive Village Survey On Crop Area Statistics In India, Gopal Naik, K P Basavaraj, V R Hegde, Vijay Paidi, Arjunan Subramanian

Working Papers

Despite the importance of agriculture in developing countries, and the general recognition of the need for strengthening data quality, very few studies examine the quality of available data and the data generation methods in agriculture. In this paper, we use data from an extensive deployment of geospatial technology, administrated concurrently alongside the conventional method in the Indian state of Karnataka, to assess the discrepancy between methods in terms of the magnitude of difference in the crop area, type and number of crops grown. The crop area estimates based on alternative method, utilising the geospatial technology, exceeded that from the estimates …

Individual Property Rights And Bargaining Outcomes: Evidence From Intra-Household Asset Data, Hema Swaminathan, J Y Suchitra, Rahul Lahoti Apr 2012

Individual Property Rights And Bargaining Outcomes: Evidence From Intra-Household Asset Data, Hema Swaminathan, J Y Suchitra, Rahul Lahoti

Working Papers

This paper examines the determinants of the decision-making process among couples. Using an expanded conceptualization of decision-making, this paper explores factors that affect convergence or divergence between spousal perceptions. In particular, the paper considers the impact of women's property status, specifically, their ownership of a house or land, on decision-making within households using data from the Karnataka Household Asset Survey, 2010-11, which collected individual-level asset ownership and valuation information. The results suggest that property ownership improves women's their autonomy in decision making but does not impact egalitarianism in decision-making between couples.

Using Photovoice To Identify Factors That Influence Children, Susan M. Cahill, Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Children in the United States are at risk for developing obesity at higher rates than ever before. The study investigated if a picture taking assignment based on Photovoice was effective in engaging children in a discussion about factors that influenced their health and participation in active occupations. Method: Seventeen children between the ages of 10 and 11 years old completed the picture taking assignment and participated in a structured discussion. Results: The children were able to identify factors that promoted a healthy lifestyle, as well as factors that did not promote a healthy lifestyle. The children also established individual …

Multiple Facets Of Damage Caused By Exposure To Low-Dose Radiation And The Legal Remedy, Yi-Chen Su, Peter W.S. Chang Apr 2012

Multiple Facets Of Damage Caused By Exposure To Low-Dose Radiation And The Legal Remedy, Yi-Chen Su, Peter W.S. Chang

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

In addition to the toll in human life, there are at least three facets of damage caused by the protracted exposure to low-dose radiation: bodily injury, mental anguish, and property injury. After examining cases and compensation schemes in the United States and Taiwan, this article concludes that both the Taiwanese administrative compensation scheme and U.S. federal courts' interpretation of the Price-Anderson Act favor finding injury to the claimants' property, but not adverse effects to their health. To redress the injustice caused by the systemic bias, this article argues that the tort system should be adapted to tolerate gray area, such …

Food for Health: Publications

Transduction of exogenous T cell receptor (TCR) genes into patients’ activated peripheral blood T cells is a potent strategy to generate large numbers of specific T cells for adoptive therapy of cancer and viral diseases. However, the remarkable clinical promise of this powerful approach is still being overshadowed by a serious potential consequence: mispairing of the exogenous TCR chains with endogenous TCR chains. These “mixed” heterodimers can generate new specificities that result in graft-versus-host reactions. Engineering TCR constant regions of the exogenous chains with a cysteine promotes proper pairing and reduces the mispairing, but, as we show here, does not …

Reidelberger R, Haver A, Chelikani PK, Apenteng B, Perriotte-Olson C, Anders K, Steenson S, Blevins JE. Effects of leptin replacement alone and with exendin-4 on food intake and weight regain in weight-reduced diet-induced obese rats. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 302: E1576–E1585, 2012. First published April 17, 2012; doi:10.1152/ajpendo.00058.2012.—Weight loss in obese humans produces a relative leptin deficiency, which is postulated to activate potent orexigenic and energy conservation mechanisms to restrict weight loss and promote weight regain. Here we determined whether leptin replacement alone or with GLP-1 receptor agonist exendin-4 attenuates weight regain or promotes greater weight loss in weight-reduced …

Oral Microbial Biofilm Stimulation Of Epithelial Cell Responses, Rebecca Peyyala, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Karen F. Novak, Jeffrey L. Ebersole

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Oral bacterial biofilms trigger chronic inflammatory responses in the host that can result in the tissue destructive events of periodontitis. However, the characteristics of the capacity of specific host cell types to respond to these biofilms remain ill-defined. This report describes the use of a novel model of bacterial biofilms to stimulate oral epithelial cells and profile select cytokines and chemokines that contribute to the local inflammatory environment in the periodontium. Monoinfection biofilms were developed with Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus gordonii, Actinomyces naeslundii, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis on rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. Biofilms, as well as planktonic cultures …
