Results Of Epidemiological Studies Of Blood Pressure Are Biased By Continuous Variation In Arm Size Related To Body Mass, Stanley J. Uluaszek, Maciej Hennberg

Human Biology

In cross-sectional epidemiological studies, blood pressure (BP) is often found to be positively correlated with fatness. Usually sphygmomanometers with only one cuff size for adults are used to measure BP while arm circumference (AC) influences BP readings. We have studied cross-sectional anthropometric and BP data of adult men and women from three populations: Cook Islanders (n = 259), Papua New Guinean: Purari (n = 295), and Ok Tedi (n = 274). These were selected because of their diverse socio-economic, anthropometric, and BP characteristics. Partial correlations and regressions were used to analyze these data. Systolic and diastolic pressures (SBP, DBP) showed …

The Role Of Dairy Products And Milk In Adolescent Obesity: Evidence From Hong Kong’S ‘‘Children Of 1997’’ Birth Cohort, Shi Lin Lin, Marie Tarrant, Lai Ling Hui, Man Ki Kwok, Tai Hing Lam, Gabriel M. Leung, Mary Schooling Dec 2012

The Role Of Dairy Products And Milk In Adolescent Obesity: Evidence From Hong Kong’S ‘‘Children Of 1997’’ Birth Cohort, Shi Lin Lin, Marie Tarrant, Lai Ling Hui, Man Ki Kwok, Tai Hing Lam, Gabriel M. Leung, Mary Schooling

Publications and Research

Background
Observational studies, mainly from Western populations, suggest dairy consumption is inversely associated with adiposity. However, in these populations the intake range is limited and both diet and obesity may share social patterning. Evidence from non-Western developed settings with different social patterning, is valuable in distinguishing whether observed associations are biologically mediated or socially confounded.

Objective
To examine the associations of milk or other dairy product consumption with adolescent obesity.

Methods
We used multivariable linear regression models to examine the associations of milk or other dairy product consumption, obtained from a food frequency questionnaire, at 11 years with body mass …

Respiration And Carbon Dioxide Accumulation In Soil Microcosms, Jasity Murphy Dec 2012

Respiration And Carbon Dioxide Accumulation In Soil Microcosms, Jasity Murphy

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The thawing of permafrost leads to liberation of soil organic matter and microbial component resulting in significant effect on the carbon cycle. Changes in permafrost soils upon the global climate warming would significantly impact microbial soil activity. Currently, not a great deal is known about what happens to the microbial community after the permafrost thaws. The activity of microbial community was determined in microcosms experiment using respirometry. To assess the CO2 fluctuations during permafrost thawing a titration experiment was performed. Based on calculations using the respirometric equation it was found that CO2 production increases with temperature, core depth, …

African Irregular Migrants In Malta: Exploring Perceptions And Renegotiating The Socio-Cultural Siege Of Malta, Hannah E. Durick Dec 2012

African Irregular Migrants In Malta: Exploring Perceptions And Renegotiating The Socio-Cultural Siege Of Malta, Hannah E. Durick

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This paper discusses the influx of African irregular migrants seeking asylum in Malta and how their arrival and growing presence in Malta is perceived by the Maltese. Since becoming an EU Member State in 2004 Malta has been overwhelmed by the number of irregular migrants arriving on its shores while en route to continental Europe. Due to its proximity to the North African coastline Malta becomes a frequent, albeit unintentional, destination for African migrants who are rescued in Maltese waters and subsequently placed in a closed detention facility until their legal status is determined in a court of law. Although …

Food Access And Food Choice: Applications For Food Deserts, Gayaneh Kyureghian, Rodolfo M. Nayga Jr. Dec 2012

Food Access And Food Choice: Applications For Food Deserts, Gayaneh Kyureghian, Rodolfo M. Nayga Jr.

Cornhusker Economics

Poor food choices have been shown to contribute to the rise of major chronic diseases, including overweight and obesity (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)). Consequently, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, emphasizes the need to shift food intake patterns to a more plant-based diet that emphasizes nutritious food, such as fruits and vegetables. Despite these efforts only 42 percent, and less than 60 percent of Americans, meet the recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption, respectively. In academic and policy circles as well as in the public eye, the local food environment has been associated with food choices and …

The Demographic And Clinical Characteristics Of Female Veterans Who Engage In Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Heather W. Gladstone Dec 2012

The Demographic And Clinical Characteristics Of Female Veterans Who Engage In Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Heather W. Gladstone

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Prior research has demonstrated that specific types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are beneficial in decreasing mental health symptoms. Despite this, rates of CAM use are relatively low among veterans, and data about CAM use among female veterans is non-existent. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the demographic and clinical characteristics of female veterans that engage in CAM. Female Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans (n=365) in Veterans Affairs (VA) care participated in a web-based survey that was one component of a larger VA study. Results indicated that slightly more than one third of …

Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin Dec 2012

Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin

Agriculture and Horticulture

Management of an herbivore production system requires a working knowledge of the components and processes of the targeted grazing system. Land owners and stakeholders wish to develop a management plan for reindeer on St. George Island, Alaska. The foci of this study were to determine seasonal diet composition (including forage preference); evaluate nutritional content of Angelica lucid, a potential alternative winter forage; estimate lichen biomass; and estimate reindeer abundance, annual production, and sustainable stocking density. Lichens were the preferred reindeer forage throughout the year, however significant seasonal dietary shifts occurred across the seasons. Fortis and grasses were consumed in significantly …

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson Dec 2012

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson

Fisheries

Consequences from management actions, particularly those regarding species reintroductions, are not always immediately apparent. After sea otters were extirpated from Southeast Alaska in the 18th and 19th century fur trade, it is presumed that marine invertebrate stocks grew in the absence of sea otter predation. Since reintroduction in the 1960s, the Southeast Alaska sea otter population has grown, with great potential to deplete the commercially important sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus. This study evaluates the interaction with and impacts of sea otters on sea cucumbers using foraging observations and sea cucumber density data collected for fishery management. Sea otter diets, in …

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth Dec 2012

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth

Fisheries

Federal law requires that resource management agencies consider stakeholder input in the selection of preferred alternatives for proposed actions. Not only do stakeholders contribute unique perspectives on the impact of alternative actions and the desirability of various policy objectives, including stakeholders in the decision process adds to the perceived legitimacy of those decisions. Incorporating stakeholder input is legally required and advantageous to sustainable governance of the oceans and implementation of a National Ocean Policy such as ecosystem-based management. Agencies use a variety of formal and informal mechanisms to solicit and incorporate stakeholder input. In this study, we compare expert panel …

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger Dec 2012

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger

Marine Biology

Changes in climate can cause shifts in ecosystem structure that can affect quantity or quality of prey available to predator populations. Due to sex or age-specific behaviors of predators, certain classes within a population may be more severely impacted by changes in their diet. This study evaluated prey composition and nutritional value of summer diets of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) from Tugidak Island, Alaska from 2001-2009. The MIXIT-WIN program was used to estimate the nutritional value of average harbor seal diets. Changes in relative abundance of certain prey species were correlated to sea surface temperature anomalies. Despite changes in …

Kelp Forests And Barren Grounds: Phlorotannin Production And Holdfast Community Structure In The Aleutian Dragon Kelp, Eualaria Fistulosa, Martin D. Schuster Dec 2012

Kelp Forests And Barren Grounds: Phlorotannin Production And Holdfast Community Structure In The Aleutian Dragon Kelp, Eualaria Fistulosa, Martin D. Schuster

Marine Biology

The canopy forming kelp Eualaria fistulosa inhabits two organizational states throughout the Aleutian archipelago, kelp forests and barren grounds. Urchin abundance and behavior determines which state dominates in any given area. Sporophyll phlorotannin content and holdfast epibiont fauna were investigated at multiple islands along the Aleutian archipelago to determine how the organizational state affects the production of secondary metabolites and the taxon richness, abundance and biomass of holdfast communities. Barren ground sporophylls had higher phlorotannin content than kelp forest sporophylls, although grazing rates on sporophylls from each state did not differ during in situ grazing experiments. The taxon richness, abundance …

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance Dec 2012

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Interactions among genomic loci (also known as epistasis) have been suggested as one of the potential sources of missing heritability in single locus analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The computational burden of searching for interactions is compounded by the extremely low threshold for identifying significant p-values due to multiple hypothesis testing corrections. Utilizing prior biological knowledge to restrict the set of candidate SNP pairs to be tested can alleviate this problem, but systematic studies that investigate the relative merits of integrating different biological frameworks and GWAS data have not been conducted. Results: We developed four biologically based frameworks to …

The Effect Of The Female Athlete Triad On Performance: Both Physiologically And Psychologically, Constance Darlington Dec 2012

The Effect Of The Female Athlete Triad On Performance: Both Physiologically And Psychologically, Constance Darlington

Honors Theses

The female athlete triad is a condition that is composed of an interaction of three separate disorders: low energy intake due to the presence of an eating disorder or disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, such as, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Separately, each disorder can affect performance; however, when the disorders are combined, the consequences are magnified. The female triad has a profound effect on an athlete's performance both physiologically and psychologically. The female athlete triad can affect any female athlete; however, it is more prevalent among the athletes that specialize in aesthetic sports or sports that emphasize leanness, for example, …

Does Pregnancy Intent Impact The Decision To Breastfeed?, Rachel Collins Dec 2012

Does Pregnancy Intent Impact The Decision To Breastfeed?, Rachel Collins

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Current literature overwhelmingly supports the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and infants. Numerous studies significantly correlate specific demographics and background factors of breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers. However, little research has focused on the intendedness of the pregnancy and its association with breastfeeding. The goal of this study was to examine the association between pregnancy intendedness and breastfeeding plans and behavior. The first question of interest examined was whether pregnancy intent was associated with a woman’s intent to exclusively breastfeed when asked during the third trimester, after control for potentially confounding differences between the two groups. The second question of interest …
