Caribou Migration And Non-Local Hunting In Northwest Alaska: A Gis Analysis Of Hunting Activity And Its Relationship With Caribou Migration Corridors, Brittney L. Jiménezszabo
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Indigenous Alaskans rely on subsistence hunting for food, with Barren-ground caribou making up approximately 27% of their diet. It is believed by subsistence hunters that non-local hunting is forcing a change in caribou migration behavior. This study examined non-local harvesting records from 2013 – 2025 in the northwest and interior Game Management Units (GMU) and Alaksa’s Western Arctic Caribou Herd (WACH) migration range data to answer the question, is there a spatial relationship between non-local harvests and WACH migration behavior. Mixed methods included spatial autocorrelation and local statistics. Findings led to the rejection of the null hypothesis which will help …
Conventional And Emerging Pre-Treatments For Plant Protein Fermentation: Prospects For Next-Generation Plant-Based Meat Analogues, Vishal Sharma, Ruth M. Hamill, Eduarda M. Cabral, Catherine M. Burgess, Catherine Barry-Ryan
Conventional And Emerging Pre-Treatments For Plant Protein Fermentation: Prospects For Next-Generation Plant-Based Meat Analogues, Vishal Sharma, Ruth M. Hamill, Eduarda M. Cabral, Catherine M. Burgess, Catherine Barry-Ryan
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The development of plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs) that accurately replicate meat texture and flavor remains limited by fundamental structural differences between plant and animal proteins. Most notably, the globular conformation of plant proteins contrasts with the fibrous anisotropy of animal muscle, thereby limiting viscoelasticity. Additional challenges include beany off-notes arising from lipid oxidation products such as hexanal and anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) that reduce bioavailability. Fermentation is a traditional technology increasingly explored as a strategy to address these limitations by modifying protein structure and functional properties, and by promoting the formation of savory volatile compounds. However, conventional processing and extraction of …

How Wisconsin Extension Educators Talk About Climate Change Without Talking About ``Climate Change'', Sky Hershberger, Todd P. Newman
How Wisconsin Extension Educators Talk About Climate Change Without Talking About ``Climate Change'', Sky Hershberger, Todd P. Newman
Journal of Extension
Climate change touches all areas of Extension's programming. To understand how educators approach talking about climate change with constituents, we interviewed 15 Extension educators and three program managers in Wisconsin. Crops and Soils educators view climate change as interwoven with their work, Financial Education educators view it as mostly disconnected, and Community Economic Development educators range between these extremes. Educators in all three programs avoid the polarizing phrase ``climate change,'' instead focusing on specific, local, and relatable issues. Educators show empathy and emphasize resilience (adaptation) rather than mitigation. These findings can inform Extension's organizational strategy on climate change.
Management Of Mandibular Angle Fracture: Case Report, Andriansyah Andriansyah, Leny S. Surya
Management Of Mandibular Angle Fracture: Case Report, Andriansyah Andriansyah, Leny S. Surya
Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science
Introduction: Mandibular angle fractures frequently occur in facial trauma and can be treated openly (open reduction and internal fixation) or closedly (maxillomandibular fixation/closed reduction) depending on the fracture pattern, dental condition and clinical circumstances. The closed approach is still relevant for favorable fractures and patients without significant comorbidities. The present case report aims to describe and evaluate the management of a right mandibular angle fracture. Treatment was performed using closed reduction.
Case: A 39-year-old male patient presented with pain when chewing in their lower right teeth. Approximately 1 month prior to hospitalization, the patient had fallen from a roof from …
Early Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment In Young Adults: The Emerging Role Of Body Roundness Index And Growth Differentiation Factor-15, Omar Jasim Mohammed, Hassanain K. Mehdi
Early Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment In Young Adults: The Emerging Role Of Body Roundness Index And Growth Differentiation Factor-15, Omar Jasim Mohammed, Hassanain K. Mehdi
Muthanna Medical Journal
Background: Cardiometabolic disorders in young adults often develop silently, years before clinical disease becomes apparent. Body mass index (BMI), the most widely used anthropometric measure of obesity, does not capture how fat is distributed in the body, and so misses much of the risk carried specifically by visceral adiposity. Two markers have drawn increasing attention as ways to address this gap: The Body Roundness Index (BRI), derived from waist circumference and height, and Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF-15), a stress-responsive cytokine.
Methods: This narrative review synthesizes current literature on the biological rationale, clinical applications, and limitations of BRI and GDF-15 …

Horticultural Diplomacy: A Framework For Growing Culturally Aware Gardeners, Stephen Stresow-Cortez, Stephen Reiners, Ashley Miller Helmholdt
Journal of Extension
Derived from person-to-person diplomacy models, a ``horticultural diplomacy'' framework was implemented in a statewide vegetable variety trial program for two seasons to introduce Master Gardeners to diverse crops and cultures. Scaffolding learning with relevant recipes, bed groupings, community tasting events, and collecting community (citizen) science data helped participants build garden skills, gain a greater appreciation for other cultures, and inform new educational materials. Horticultural diplomacy is part of a deliberate effort aimed at growing food and building understanding among (primarily White) volunteers. The techniques that helped make this program successful, adaptable to other garden programs, and aspects that require improvements …
Equine Body Condition Scoring Flow Chart: A Field Guide, Robyn Stewart, Carissa Wickens, Brooklyne Wassel
Equine Body Condition Scoring Flow Chart: A Field Guide, Robyn Stewart, Carissa Wickens, Brooklyne Wassel
Journal of Extension
The Equine Body Condition Scoring Flow Chart is a visual decision-making tool designed to guide users through the process of evaluating a horse's body condition score (BCS) using the Henneke scale. Accurately assessing BCS is critical for making informed management decisions relating to equine nutrition, health, and training. This tool simplifies the scoring process by breaking it down into step-by-step questions based on clear scoring criteria, anatomical landmarks, and both visual and tactile assessment. This tool can be used regardless of geographic location and benefits a diverse audience of Extension educators, horse owners, 4-H'ers, and equine business owners.

Financial Recovery Capital: Exploring The Role Of Extension Education In Promoting Substance Use Recovery, Alex Elswick, Nichole L Huff, Omolola A. Adedokun, Leslie Workman
Journal of Extension
Substance use is a widespread and complex public health challenge. Financial stress (e.g., unemployment, inadequate housing, transportation access, poor financial literacy) is pervasive among people with substance use disorder (SUD). However, few educational interventions exist to address financial stress for this group. Through the theoretical lens of recovery capital (an asset-based approach that describes the totality of resources that support SUD recovery), we summarize the association between financial stress and substance use, offering implications for Extension educators by highlighting PROFIT, an exemplary program that leverages Extension education as a tool to promote financial recovery capital among people with SUD.

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Hydrogen-infused water (HIW) has attracted considerable interest over the past two decades due to its potential health benefits. However, its effects on exercise performance and hydration biomarkers remain inadequately explored, particularly in physically active populations such as collegiate athletes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of medium-term HIW supplementation on running performance, hydration biomarkers, and health-related quality of life in collegiate athletes. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial was conducted with twelve collegiate athletes (age: 25.1 ± 3.5 years, six female). Participants consumed 660 mL daily of either HIW (300 µmol/L dihydrogen) or control water (0 µmol/L …
The Grace That Settles Nothing: Sacrifice-Witness Without Discharge — Food Image Recognition With Per-Species Lifespan Facts, A Quantity-Blind Meditation Recommendation, And A No-Balance Data Schema To Prevent Moral Licensing, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
We specify a mindful-eating and gratitude-meditation application in which a food-image recognition model resolves a meal photograph into its source species; each species is shown individually, at species level, with its typical farmed age at harvest and its typical natural lifespan, with uncertainty stated and no total computed. The application then recommends a walking or sitting meditation in a fixed form, issued by an automated agent and never scaled to what was eaten. The data schema holds no balance, score, streak, duration or total between consumption and practice, only an append-only log of moments, so the practice cannot function as …
Silica Wat As Hybrid Food Network With Gratitude-Economic Drivers: Religious Institutional Infrastructure For Middle-Way Restoration Of Food Systems — Monastery-Based Community Kitchens With Donated Produce, A Purchased Supply Floor, An Unweighted Non-Monetary Contribution Ledger, And Ai Caretakers Without Religious Office, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
We specify a hybrid community food network rooted in religious institutions: a distributed network of monastery-based sites, each combining a farm, a kitchen and free food distribution, operated by AI and robotic caretakers that hold no ordained status or ritual authority. Supply has two layers: produce donated from participants' home gardens, which the shared kitchen turns into meals for many, and food purchased through ordinary channels that guarantees a supply floor, so that people with no land, time or skill are never excluded; over decades the intended ratio shifts toward donated produce without cutting anyone off. Contributions are not priced. …
