An Exploratory Study Of Group Exercise Participants: Factors Contributing To Retention In A Medical Non-Profit Fitness Setting, Sharon Newcomer Stiteler May 2012

An Exploratory Study Of Group Exercise Participants: Factors Contributing To Retention In A Medical Non-Profit Fitness Setting, Sharon Newcomer Stiteler

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

An exploratory study of group exercise participants was conducted to link group cohesion theory and perceived effects of social support to the retention of fitness club membership through building relationships. The study explored the level of group cohesion and social support experienced by participants in public group fitness exercise classes. In addition, participant loyalty was reviewed to understand membership retention based on group participation. A literature review was conducted to study previous research of group cohesive factors, social support and the role group exercise classes play in adherence to programs. Literature was also reviewed to understand effective membership retention efforts …

Hidden Kisses, Walled Gardens, And Angel-Kinder: A Study Of The Victorian And Edwardian Conceptions Of Motherhood And Childhood In Little Women, The Secret Garden, And Peter Pan, Leah Marie Kirkpatrick

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In this paper, I explore the evolving conceptions of childhood and motherhood as expressed in Victorian and Edwardian children’s literature generally, and specifically in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. An overview of the history of children’s literature and its development with relation to the changing cultural concept of childhood, as well as a discussion of social, economic, and creative factors impacting the ideological position of women at the turn of the 20th century provide the necessary background for said exploration. A variety of primary and secondary sources relating to …

Haptic Vision, Adam H. Donner May 2012

Haptic Vision, Adam H. Donner

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Haptic Vision is an investigation into the idea that the experience of architecture is lacking because of the bias Western society has placed on vision, that the other senses are stifled by this and that it is a result of us living in an occularcentric society. Architect and theorist Juhani Pallasmaa has said that, “While our experience of the world is formulated by a combination of five senses, much architecture is produced under consideration of only one - sight. The suppression of the other sensory realms has led to an impoverishment of our environment, causing a feeling of detachment and …

Permanent Impermanence, Craig A. Weflen

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

"This is the real news of our century. It is highly feasible to take care of all of humanity at a higher standard of living than anybody has ever experienced or dreamt of. To do so without having anybody profit at the expense of another, so that everybody can enjoy the whole earth. And it can all be done by 1985." -Buckminster Fuller, 1971

41 years later, we still have people living in abject poverty, forced into situations where the politics of displacement actively prevent them from improving their living situation. For an organization that puts out a "Handbook for …

Unavailable And Inaccessible: An Analysis Of Urban Food Insecurity, Stephen Brown May 2012

Unavailable And Inaccessible: An Analysis Of Urban Food Insecurity, Stephen Brown

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored food insecurity by examining the ways in which residents of low-income, urban communities access food. The primary elements of this thesis are an analysis of the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the populations surrounding food retailers, and a survey of the availability, cost, and quality of fresh fruits and vegetables in food stores commonly found in the urban environment. Overall, this study found that low-income, minority communities are largely served by independent supermarkets, small grocers and convenience stores that charge higher prices for staple foods. Conversely, it was found that wealthy areas enjoy easy access to corporate …

Evaluation Of Psychological Services Provied In A University-Based Primary Care Clinic, Elizabeth Sadock

Theses and Dissertations

Primary care clinics are increasingly integrating psychological services into their service programs; however few studies have provided quantitative data to support these services. This study served as a program evaluation of the psychological services provided at the Ambulatory Care Clinic at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. It includes: 1) a description of the program, including types of patients served, their presenting problems, and treatments administered and 2) evidence of the impact of mental health services on primary care patients’ emotional adjustment and progress on behavioral goals. Data on exposure to stressful life events and intake and …

Impacts Of Rdx Soil Contamination Across An Age Gradient For The Native Shrub Morella Cerifera., Stephen Via May 2012

Impacts Of Rdx Soil Contamination Across An Age Gradient For The Native Shrub Morella Cerifera., Stephen Via

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the impacts of explosive contamination on vegetation is key to understanding explosives behavior in the environment. I quantified shrub growth responses to 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,35-triazine (RDX) soil contamination across three life stages and I hypothesized that RDX would have the greatest impact on seed germination. Morella cerifera seeds were germinated on soils amended with RDX up to 1500 mg RDX kg-1 dry soil. Juvenile and adult individuals were exposed for 6 weeks to soil amended with RDX up to 750 and 1500 mg RDX kg-1 dry soil, respectively. Morphological responses were quantified for juveniles while physiological measurements were quantified for adults. …

Active Video Games: The Mediating Effect Of Aerobic Fitness On Body Composition, Ralph Maddison, Cliona N. Mhurchu, Andrew Jull, Harry Prapavessis, Louise S. Foley, Yannan Jiang

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Increased understanding of why and how physical activity impacts on health outcomes is needed to increase the effectiveness of physical activity interventions. A recent randomized controlled trial of an active video game (PlayStation EyeToy™) intervention showed a statistically significant treatment effect on the primary outcome, change from baseline in body mass index (BMI), which favored the intervention group at 24 weeks. In this short paper we evaluate the mediating effects of the secondary outcomes. Objective: To identify mediators of the effect of an active video games intervention on body composition. Methods: Data from a two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial of an …

Chronic Kidney Disease Educational Sessions: Assessment Of Current Practices And Attendance Barriers And Facilitators, Della Connor May 2012

Chronic Kidney Disease Educational Sessions: Assessment Of Current Practices And Attendance Barriers And Facilitators, Della Connor

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) educational sessions, whether part of a multidisciplinary plan of care or separate entities, have been increasingly utilized over the last 20 years. Although literature reviews exist in which randomized controlled studies concerning CKD educational sessions are addressed, none of the studies reviewed specifically addressed the low attendance rates of CKD educational sessions. The purpose of this research was to describe current and recommended CKD (predialysis) educational interventions and outcomes in controlled and multidisciplinary studies, examine documented issues related to attendance, and determine barriers and facilitators that affect attendance at educational sessions for CKD patients.

The Ecological Role Of Rhizophytic Green Algae In Soft-Bottom Habitats, Laura Bedinger May 2012

The Ecological Role Of Rhizophytic Green Algae In Soft-Bottom Habitats, Laura Bedinger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rhizophytic algae are large, abundant primary producers throughout tropical and subtropical areas worldwide where they grow as an understory in seagrass beds, as well as form mixed or monospecific beds of exclusively rhizophytic algal species. In this dissertation, "rhizophytic algae" refers to coenocytic green algae (Chlorophyta) in the order Bryopsidales that use a net of rhizoids to anchor in unconsolidated sediments. In the development of seagrass beds, rhizophytic algae colonize bare patches and are thought to facilitate seagrass colonization by stabilizing sediments and providing organic matter. However, despite their prominence little is known about many aspects of the ecology of …
