Identification Of Latent Subgroups Of Obese Adolescents Enrolled In A Healthy Weight Management Program, Cassie Brode

Theses and Dissertations

In obesity research, it is assumed that the population is homogeneous. While this approach has yielded important insights, testing this supposition might reveal information that could impact our understanding of the phenomena and its treatment. In this study, data from obese teenagers (N = 248, Mean BMI percentile = 99%; Mean age = 13.9, SD = 1.8) who were predominantly minority (n = 182), female (n = 169), and enrolled in a weight loss intervention were analyzed. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to segment patients into groups based on their scores on PedsQL 4.0 scales (physical-, emotional-, social-, and …

Korsgaard And Non-Sentient Life, Gregory L. Bock May 2012

Korsgaard And Non-Sentient Life, Gregory L. Bock

Between the Species

Christine Korsgaard argues for the moral status of animals and our obligations to them. She grounds this obligation on the notion that we share a common identity, our animal nature, with them and that animal pain represents a public reason that binds us; nevertheless, her distinctive attempt to enlist Kantian arguments to account for our obligations to animals has a startling implication that she fails to adequately consider: that we have direct duties to plants as well.

Increased Modulation By Cognitive Control Region During Fmri Working Memory Task Suggest Inefficiencies In Network Connectivity In Children With Adhd, Ashley Burgess

Honors College Theses

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder common among children and adolescent populations whose symptoms are believed to be caused by deficits in executive functioning processes such as working memory. Using fMRI analyses, differences in the modulatory influence exhibited by the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) on cortico-striatal regions implicated in working memory (2-back) (Owen et al 2005) was assessed between children with ADHD (twenty-three participants; mean age 6 yrs: 6.4-14.9 yrs) and healthy controls (twenty-six participants; mean age 10.1yrs: 6.3-14.1 yrs). Modulatory influence is defined as the degree to which one region exerts control on another region …

Ber And Folate Deficiency: A Comprehensive Overview Of Dna Base Excision Repair And The Effect Of Dietary Folate, Lydia Lanni

Honors College Theses

Folate is the naturally occurring form of water-soluble B vitamin that is found in foods such as leafy vegetables, fruits, legumes, etc. Dietary supplementation of folate has shown to be protective against neural tube defects and other congenital disorders, and of recent, its role in carcinogenesis has been of special interest. Though mechanistically unclear, a positive correlation has been observed between folate deficiency in the diet and decrease function of DNA base excision repair pathways. DNA base excision repair, commonly referred to as BER, is an important cellular process that is responsible for the removal and repair of individual damaged …

Seeds For Change: Examining The Association Between Race, Food Security, And Urban Agriculture, Komal Razvi May 2012

Seeds For Change: Examining The Association Between Race, Food Security, And Urban Agriculture, Komal Razvi

Honors College Theses

Access to healthy, nutritious food is one of the most basic human needs. Unfortunately, a large portion of the global population, including that of the United States, has limited access to such food, hence putting families in a state of food insecurity. Food insecurity occurs when households are unable to (or struggle to) provide adequate food to all household members due to lack of funds or food resources. This phenomenon is considered to be a major concern in many urban settings such as Detroit, as it is a characteristic of societal distress. Interestingly, research has shown that while food insecurity …

Early Term Infant Care: Hospital Utilization And Breastfeeding Practices, Debra Craighead

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Early term infants (ETI), with gestational ages from 37 to 38 weeks, have higher morbidity and mortality rates when compared with later term infant counterparts born at 39 to 41 weeks. Although this newly identified term infant subcategory is gaining attention, the immediate and long term health outcomes and care needs of ETI remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this research project was to examine the current research documenting ETI health and explore care practices that are currently utilized to promote ETI health. The original research study describes care practices used to promote health for ETIs born in Louisiana in …

The Use Of Provider Audit And Feedback On Improving Hypertension Control In The Type 2 Diabetic Population, Kara Painton May 2012

The Use Of Provider Audit And Feedback On Improving Hypertension Control In The Type 2 Diabetic Population, Kara Painton

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

As the seventh leading cause of death, diabetes affects more than 25 million Americans and contributes to major cardiovascular diseases and complications (CDC, 2011). The cost of care for these Americans is astounding: $174 billion dollars was spent on diabetes care in 2007 (ADA, 2011). Furthermore, an estimated 75% of patients with type 2 diabetes have concomitant hypertension, and nearly one-half of these patients have uncontrolled hypertension (Thomas & Kodack, 2011; USDHHS, 2011). An initial chart audit at an outpatient, rural clinic in east central Illinois revealed that 90% of the type 2 diabetic population had concomitant hypertension, and only …

Assessment Of The Utilization Of Hiv Interventions By Sex Workers In Selected Brothels In Bangladesh: An Exploratory Study, Nafisa Lira Huq, Mahbub Elahi Chowdhury

The Qualitative Report

In this qualitative study of brothel-based Female Sex Workers (FSWs), the authors explored factors that influence safe sex practices of FSWs within an integrated HIV intervention. Qualitative methods, including focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews and key informant interviews were applied in four brothels in Bangladesh. Young and elderly FSWs, Sordarnis (Madams who own young FSWs and who may be either active or inactive sex workers themselves), program managers and providers were the participants for this study. Findings showed that condom use was high but not consistent among bonded FSWs (those who are under the control of a Sordarni) who …

"Because I Said So" And Other Notions Of Authority: An Advanced Course On Communication And Power, Maureen M. Louis May 2012

"Because I Said So" And Other Notions Of Authority: An Advanced Course On Communication And Power, Maureen M. Louis

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Many college students have inconsistent knowledge of historic and policy contexts where communication and power have played a key role. As Anton Ego, Ratatouillefood critic would say, “What we need is some perspective.” We have found one avenue for the development of such perspective is an advanced course for the consideration of power or, more accurately, the examination of powerlessness and how communication can be brought to bear for both the manifestation and limitation of power. By examining those factors that render one less powerful and historic instances that are glaring in this regard, the student can better understand …
