Growing Support: Localism, Nonprofits, And Food Access In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Brent Tranchina
Growing Support: Localism, Nonprofits, And Food Access In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Brent Tranchina
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Problems with food insecurity, such as a lack of access to healthy and affordable food in low-income neighborhoods, has been an ongoing challenge in New Orleans. The damages inflicted by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent citywide flooding on the local food system reduced the numerical count of operational full-service supermarkets and grocery stores throughout the city. The result has been a widespread presence of food deserts and grocery gaps, particularly in low-income neighborhoods. This thesis explores the emergence of food localism practices by food advocacy professionals as a capacity-building tool for New Orleans residents to increase community food security and develop …
Traversing Swanton Road, 8th Ed., James A. West
Traversing Swanton Road, 8th Ed., James A. West
Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources
Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …
Socioeconomic Factors That Lead To Latino Male Students Leaving School Before Graduating, Joseph C. D'Agostino
Socioeconomic Factors That Lead To Latino Male Students Leaving School Before Graduating, Joseph C. D'Agostino
Education
Students of color make up a predominant number of learners that leave high school before graduating (National Center for Education Research, 2009). I selected to study Latino males to narrow the scope of my research. The literature I reviewed pointed directly at socioeconomics as one of the primary factors. I feel there are more specific factors involved for many of the individuals impacted. I used a qualitative approach and utilized an anonymous survey and individual interviews to pinpoint some of these factors. The findings from my research further supported that socioeconomics were a leading factor. My data and literature review …

Grandparents, Great Parents: Negotiating The Role Transition To Custodial Grandparent, Leanne Alaine Burnett
Grandparents, Great Parents: Negotiating The Role Transition To Custodial Grandparent, Leanne Alaine Burnett
Communication
An ever increasing number of grandparents in the United States are taking on the responsibility for providing primary care for their grandchildren. Focus group interviews conducted in two urban communities in Alaska were the basis of this study examining how grandparents negotiate the role transition as they become custodial grandparents. Role theory was used to inform the analysis of the data. The two major themes which emerged suggested these transitions were effected by role conflict and role timing. The grandparents participating in the study indicated that involvement in peer support groups helped them to more successfully negotiate this difficult role …
Inflammatory Stress In The Cerebellum: Implications For Nutritional Intervention In Alcohol-Mediated Cns Damage, Mary Barile Hogan
Inflammatory Stress In The Cerebellum: Implications For Nutritional Intervention In Alcohol-Mediated Cns Damage, Mary Barile Hogan
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Presently there are no effective disease-modifying treatments to combat neurodegeneration among chronic alcoholics. Alcohol abuse imparts a sustained presence of oxidative stressors, including pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFα, in the brain. A persistent presence of TNFα leads to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which promotes oxidative damage, subsequent neurodegeneration, and ultimately permanent cognitive changes in afflicted individuals. Our laboratory has demonstrated the potency of ursolic acid, isolated from Alaskan blueberries, to abolish TNFα mediated neurotoxicity in human neuroblastoma cells. Our current study investigated the neuroinflammatory effects of ethanol and TNFα on dissociated neurons and glia cells cultured from embryonic chicks while …

The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo
The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This thesis represents the first comprehensive ethnoarchaeological study to date on the material culture of African mobile pastoralism, a way of life economically, culturally, and ideologically centered on the herding of livestock. In Africa, tens of millions of people today still rely on cattle-based pastoralism for survival in arid lands that are unsuitable for agricultural production. Our understanding of ancient pastoralism is still hampered, however, by a belief held by many that nomadic populations such as pastoralists are difficult to trace in the archaeological record. Results from ethnographic research among modern Samburu cattle pastoralists in Kenya in fact challenge common …
Diet And Affinity From The Middle Neolithic To Early Bronze Age, Estremadura, Portugal: A Comparison Of Human Dental Remains From Feteira Ii And Bolores, Briana Christa Horwath
Diet And Affinity From The Middle Neolithic To Early Bronze Age, Estremadura, Portugal: A Comparison Of Human Dental Remains From Feteira Ii And Bolores, Briana Christa Horwath
Anthropology
The social and political changes accompanying the transition from the Neolithic through Early Bronze Age in southwestern Iberia are reasonably well understood; much less is known about population movements and dietary changes that accompanied these transformations. To address possible population movements and dietary change, human dental remains from the Middle Neolithic through Late Neolithic site of Feteira II (3600-2900 B.C.E) and the Late Neolithic through the Early Bronze Age site of Bolores (2800-1800 B.C.E) will be used to examine diet and affinity. Two hypotheses are tested: the period of social change was associated with dietary change between individuals interred at …
Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll
Insight Into The Diet History Of Ice Seals Using Isotopic Signatures Of Muscle Tissue And Claws, Sara Shanae Carroll
Marine Biology
Climate change and sea ice reduction in the Arctic may impact foraging of ice-associated predators. The goal of my thesis work was to examine interannual differences in the diet of ringed, bearded, spotted, and ribbon seals as described by stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios of muscle tissue and claws to assess foraging plasticity. Isotopic mixing models from muscle data were used to describe the proportional contribution of prey groups during 2003, 2008-2010. Results showed a higher proportional contribution of smelt (Osmeridae) and benthic prey to ringed and bearded seal diets in 2003 compared to 2008-2010. Seasonal keratin layers deposited …
Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni
Elevating Ascorbate Content In Tomato And Studying The Role Of Jasmonates In Modulating Ascorbate In Arabidopsis, Shashank S. Kulkarni
Student Theses and Dissertations
Vitamin C (ascorbate, AsA) is the most abundant water soluble antioxidant in plants and is essential for plant and human health. Ascorbate plays a key role in protecting plants from reactive oxygen species generated during normal metabolic processes and under stress conditions including wounding, pathogen attack, salt, heat, light, and ozone exposure. Jasmonates (JAs), a group of plants hormones involved in stress responses also protect plants from these stresses. There is evidence indicating that JAs modulate AsA content in plants. The recent discovery of the inositol pathway has opened possibilities for AsA enhancement via metabolic engineering in plants. Over-expression of …
Federal Spending In Alaska: Running Out Of Steam?, Oliver Scott Goldsmith
Federal Spending In Alaska: Running Out Of Steam?, Oliver Scott Goldsmith
ISER Reports
After nearly a decade of explosive growth, federal spending in Alaska has turned flat, except for the temporary boost from the stimulus package—the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—that pumped more than $2.2 billion into the state economy in 2009 and 2010. (Shown in black in the figure below.) Total federal spending in Alaska was $11.2 billion in 2009 and $10.9 billion in 2010, compared with about $9.4 billion in 2008. But without the stimulus funds, federal spending in 2009 and 2010 would have been no higher than in the previous four years. Alaska was first among the states in per …
Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers In Missouri Cotton Production, Andrea Phillips Jones
Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers In Missouri Cotton Production, Andrea Phillips Jones
Student Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production. A standard fertilization practice for N in the Mid-South is a split application. However, a single N application at planting would potentially save fuel and labor cost. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of controlled release nitrogen (CRN) fertilizers applied to various soils relative to pre-plant and split application nitrogen fertilizer programs for cotton production. The study was conducted in 2010 and 2011 on a Bosket fine sandy loam, a Tiptonville silt loam soil, and a Sharkey clay soils. At each location, ten treatments …

Shoreline Distribution And Landscape Genetics Of Bears In A Recently Deglaciated Fjord: Glacier Bay, Alaska, Tania M. Lewis
Shoreline Distribution And Landscape Genetics Of Bears In A Recently Deglaciated Fjord: Glacier Bay, Alaska, Tania M. Lewis
Biological Sciences
To further knowledge of mammalian colonization patterns following deglaciation, I used occupancy modeling to estimate black and brown bear shoreline distribution of Glacier Bay and how these distributions relates to the number years of land exposure and post glacial plant and stream succession. I also conducted microsatellite genetic analysis of brown bear hair and tissue to determine contemporary population structure throughout the park and how it relates to landscape features and surrounding populations. Closed forest cover within 1 km of the study site was a strong positive predictor of black bear occurrence. Brown bears were detected at 100% of sites …
Biochemical And Microbiological Assessments Of Dried Alaska Pink Salmon, Red Salmon And Pacific Cod Heads, Huseyin Biceroglu
Biochemical And Microbiological Assessments Of Dried Alaska Pink Salmon, Red Salmon And Pacific Cod Heads, Huseyin Biceroglu
Fisheries
Fish heads are generally considered as unsuitable byproducts for human consumption in the United States. The initial objective was to compare the moisture content and water activity levels on dried pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and dried red salmon (O. nerka) using different temperature and time integration. The secondary objective was to compare shelf life characteristics, rancidity and mold growth, between dried pink dried salmon and dried Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) heads stored for up to 180 days at the ambient temperature (21°C) for East African seafood markets. The third objective was to assess the antioxidant effects for frozen and dried …

Growth And Post-Harvest Quality Of Selected Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea Gigas) Cultured In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, And Puget Sound, Washington, In October Of 2009 And June Of 2010, Stuart Rendell Thomas
Fisheries
The primary objective of this project was to evaluate the growth, biochemical and fatty acid composition, physical and shell characteristics, and basic reproductive development of families of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from the USDA-funded Molluscan Broodstock Program (MBP) planted in suspended culture in Kachemak Bay (KB), Alaska, and at an intertidal site in Thorndyke Bay (TB), Puget Sound, Washington. The MBP selects oysters to improve yields, growth, and survival, but little is known about the effects of selective breeding on other biological characteristics of selected oysters. Shell and meat characteristics of oysters from each of the seven highest-yielding MBP families …

A Total Environment Of Change: Exploring Social-Ecological Shifts In Subsistence Fisheries In Noatak And Selawik, Alaska, Katie J. Moerlein
Fisheries
Arctic ecosystems are undergoing rapid changes as a result of global climate change, with significant implications for the livelihoods of arctic peoples. In this thesis, I use ethnographic research methods to detail prominent environmental changes observed and experienced over the past few decades and to document the impact of these changes on subsistence fishing practices in the Inupiaq communities of Noatak and Selawik in northwestern Alaska. Using in-depth key informant interviews, participant observation, and cultural consensus analysis, I explore local knowledge and perceptions of climate change and other pronounced changes facing the communities of Noatak and Selawik. I find consistent …

The use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in disease surveys and reporting is becoming increasingly routine, enabling a better understanding of spatial epidemiology and the improvement of surveillance and control strategies. In turn, the greater availability of spatially referenced epidemiological data is driving the rapid expansion of disease mapping and spatial modeling methods, which are becoming increasingly detailed and sophisticated, with rigorous handling of uncertainties. This expansion has, however, not been matched by advancements in the development of spatial datasets of human population distribution that accompany disease maps or spatial models. Where risks are heterogeneous …

A Framework Convention On Global Health: Health For All, Justice For All, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Health inequalities represent perhaps the most consequential global health challenge and yet they persist despite increased funding and innovative programs. The United Nations is revising the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that will shape the world for many years to come. What would a transformative post-MDG framework for global health justice look like? A global coalition of civil society and academics—the Joint Action and Learning Initiative on National and Global Responsibilities for Health (JALI)—has formed an international campaign to advocate for a Framework Convention on Global Health (FCGH). Recently endorsed by the UN Secretary-General, the FCGH would reimagine global governance for …
