The purpose of this dissertation was to identify the effect of creatine (Cr) supplementation during immobilization on muscle performance. Twenty-five healthy, active male (n = 14; age 28 ± 5 years) and female (n = 11; age 22 ± 4 years) subjects performed wrist flexion exercise before (PRE) and after (POST) one week of wrist/forearm cast immobilization. During the immobilization period, subjects consumed Cr (20g) or placebo PL (4% CHO flavored solution) interspersed throughout the day. On the first day of immobilization subjects consumed two doses of Cr (10 g) or PL. Subjects consumed 5 g of Cr or PL …
Not Just Another Paper Cut: An Exploratory Analysis Of The Silent Epidemic Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (Nssi) And Efforts To Control Self-Injury Among School-Based Adolescents, Eloisa Sanchez
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a behavioral health problem within the broader risk category of self-directed violence and closely associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) (American Psychiatric, 2012). There are several types of NSSI behaviors such as cutting; which are used as a coping mechanism by individuals to relieve distress. These methods of coping are private and silent and according to experts in the field, this is a fast growing behavioral problem among adolescents. Researchers Muehlenkamp, Walsh, & McDade (2010) approximate the life time rates of at least one NSSI act among adolescents in high school to be 23%. The primary …

Relationships and differences among their performance in both languages were examined, along with the contribution of specific parent demographic variables to math achievement. Findings indicated that DLL Latino Head Start children's performance on …
A Mother's Love: A Narrative Analysis Of Food Advertisements In An African American Targeted Women's Magazine, Janine Danielle Beahm
A Mother's Love: A Narrative Analysis Of Food Advertisements In An African American Targeted Women's Magazine, Janine Danielle Beahm
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how food advertisers contributed to the cultural identity of the "good mother" in the 1990s and 2000s. It expands on previous research that investigated traditional gender ideologies in food advertisements by narrowing in on the specific stories presented to African American women. It highlights a time when advertisers were responding to the demands of African American activists to recognize the African American consumer, and depict African American characters in a positive light. A narrative method of inquiry is utilized to deconstruct the stories in 117 food advertisements running in Essence magazine (an African American targeted women's magazine) …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the magnitude and causes of low vision disability (severe visual impairment [SVI] and moderate visual impairment [MVI]) among students at Al-Noor Institute for the Blind (NIB) in Al-Hassa, Saudi Arabia in 2006. Methods: An optometrist conducted refraction of 122 eyes of the 61 students (27 boys and 34 girls) with MVI (vision <6/18 to 6/60) and SVI (vision <6/60 to 3/60). Ophthalmologists examined the anterior and posterior segments, and analysed the outcomes of additional investigations to finalise the diagnosis. The results were categorised as ‘preventable’, ‘treatable’ and ‘not amenable to treatment’. The low vision care was also reviewed. Results: In 12 (9.8%) eyes, visual acuity was ≥6/18 and in 28 (23%) eyes, it was <3/60. MVI and SVI were found in 82 eyes (67.2%). Hereditary retinal disorders were found in 68 (55.7%) eyes. Although refractive errors were found in 112 (91.8%) eyes, isolated refractive error was found in only 9 students. Congenital glaucoma and cataract were responsible for visual impairment in 16 (13.1%) and 9 (7.4%) eyes. These students were prescribed optical and non-optical low vision aids. Conclusion:Retinal disease was the main cause of SVI and MVI in our series. Some students at Al-Noor Institute for the Blind have curable low vision conditions. Rehabilitation of low vision disability should be different from that offered to the absolutely blind.

Feed The Future Releases Two New Sorghum Varieties In Nicaragua, Kimberly Christiansen
INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
de Tecnologia Agropecuaria (INTA), the Collaborative Research Support Program for Sorghum, Millet and Other Grains (INTSORMIL) has released two new varieties of sorghum in Nicaragua that will be used for forage (plant material eaten by grazing livestock).
These new varieties exhibit the “brown midrib” trait (bmr), which has been used for many years by sorghum producers in the United States. The bmr trait increases the digestibility of sorghum by reducing the amount of lignin, a chemical compound found in the cell walls of plants. The more digestible sorghum is for the livestock that consume it, the higher the quality of …

High-Resolution Niche Models Via A Correlative Approach: Comparing And Combining Correlative And Process-Based Information, Victor Bogosian Iii, Eric C. Hellgren, Michael W. Sears, Raymond W. Moody
Publications
Correlative and process-based approaches to describing the ecological niche in a spatially explicit fashion have often been compared in an adversarial framework. We sought to compare niche models developed via classic (correlative only), niche (process-based information), and hybridized (correlative augmented with process-based derived information) approaches, with the goal of determining if the added effort of process-based model development yielded better model fit. Correlative data layers (i.e., habitat models) included vegetation community types, Euclidean distance statistics, neighborhood analyses, and topographically-derived information. Mechanistic data layers were estimates of thermal suitability derived from field-collected datasets and biophysical calculations, and estimates of prey biomass …

Thyroid Function And Perfluoroalkyl Acids In Children Living Near A Chemical Plant, Maria-Jose Lopez-Espinosa, Debapriya Mondal, Ben Armstrong, Michael S. Bloom, Tony Fletcher
Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Background: Animal studies suggest that some perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), including perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) may impair thyroid function. Epidemiological findings, mostly related to adults, are inconsistent.
Objectives: We investigated whether concentrations of PFAAs were associated with thyroid function among 10,725 children (1–17 years of age) living near a Teflon manufacturing facility in the Mid-Ohio Valley (USA).
Methods: Serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total thyroxine (TT4), and PFAAs were measured during 2005–2006, and information on diagnosed thyroid disease was collected by questionnaire. Modeled in utero PFOA concentrations were based on historical information on PFOA releases, …

Assessment Of Phytoplankton Productivity Using Satellite Data For Peter The Great Gulf, Oksana Zhdanova, Alexander Abakumov
Assessment Of Phytoplankton Productivity Using Satellite Data For Peter The Great Gulf, Oksana Zhdanova, Alexander Abakumov
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The biological productivity of ecological systems is very important characteristic for study of the natural environment. For aquatic ecosystems the biological productivity can be determined on the base of phytoplankton productivity. The distribution of phytoplankton in a vertical column of water under the influence of sun intensity, temperature and mineral content is simulated. Change in the concentration of mineral substances and phytoplankton is influenced by diffusion. Photosynthetic activity radiation and temperature of water satisfy the climatic conditions typical of Peter the Great Bay. A remote sensing data probing the seas and oceans plays an important role in the study of …

Phosphorus Use And Management Strategies: Exploring Scenarios Of Smallholder’S Soil Fertility, Food Production And Livelihood With A Multi-Agent System Model, Quang Bao Le, Roland W. Scholz, Roman Seidl, Quyet Manh Vu, Tien Minh Tran
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Phosphorus (P) is a key nutrient for food production. However, excess P use, e.g. in form of inorganic fertilizer application, can lead to environmental pollution, biodiversity losses and low profitability. Continuous cultivation with underuse of P fertilizer results in low food productivity and soil degradation due to soil nutrient mining or soil erosion. The concern is most serious for smallholder farmers in developing countries whose food production and livelihood is tied directly to their access to and efficient use of P as key nutrient for plant growth. This paper introduces a multi-agent system modeling framework for assessing long-term impacts of …

Suicide: A Legal, Constitutional, And Human Right, Adam Lamparello
Suicide: A Legal, Constitutional, And Human Right, Adam Lamparello
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
Ultimately, this Article strives to advance discussion of values and rights and thereby give greater freedom to the individual in decisions relating to life and liberty. This Article argues that the value of life is best expressed when the concept of value is given a subjective rather than objective meaning. In other words, the individual himself should determine the value of his life. A third party should not force upon that individual a determination with no understanding of an individual's private end-of-life choices. Life has value not because of how others define it, but rather because of how each individual …
