Student Works
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent across all geographic areas, age groups, and seasons and is increasing in incidence. Vitamin D receptors have been found to be present in almost every body cell and tissue. Clinical research has alluded to a preventive effect of vitamin D supplementation on cardiovascular disorders such as myocardial infarction, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Furthermore, a low serum vitamin D level has been associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. This paper examines the association between serum vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease mortality and risk.

Nitric Oxide And The Biological Cascades Underlying Increased Neurogenesis, Enhanced Learning Ability, And Academic Ability As An Effect Of Increased Bouts Of Physical Activity, Samuel Hunt, James W. Navalta
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 5(3) : 245-275, 2012. The consummate principle underlying all physiological research is corporeal adaptation at every level of the organism observed. With respect to humans, the body learns to function based on the external stimuli from the environment, beginning in the womb, throughout the developmental stages of life. Nitric Oxide (NO) appears to be the governor of the plasticity of several systems in mammals implicit in their proper development. It is the purpose of this review to describe the physiological pathways that lead to plasticity of not only the vasculature but also of the brain …

Development And Comparison Of Two Field-Based Body Fat Prediction Equations: Nhanes 1999-2004, Michael Zanovec, Jing Wang, Carol E. O'Neil
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 5(3) : 223-231, 2012. Clinical guidelines define obesity in terms of excess body weight adjusted for height (i.e., bodymass index [BMI] categories) and/or gender-specific waist circumference (WC) cut-point values. Since body composition, particularly fat mass, is the most variable among individuals due to differences by gender, age, and race, and total percent body fat (%BF) can be estimated accurately using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the purpose of this study was to develop and compare two field-based body fat prediction equations suitable for a nationally representative sample of the US adult population. Data were analyzed from …

Investigating Teacher Perceptions On School Gardening Programs, Jennifer Emily Tinker
Investigating Teacher Perceptions On School Gardening Programs, Jennifer Emily Tinker
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of school-garden programs in three specific sights in Palm Beach County Florida. This study was designed to guide the development of a “curriculum model” for Garden Based Education (GBE) in School Settings. The justification was due to the fact that; there is a lack of GBE curriculum serving Palm Beach County. Schools are not held accountable to teach environmental education, as there are no Florida standards in the area of eco-literacy and sustainability.
A theoretically-constructivist, conceptual framework for developing and evaluating behaviorally based, school-garden programs, was designed. Data collection …

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children: Does Mothers' Demand For Antenatal Care Matter For Child Health In Nepal?, Nafisa Halim
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
Despite significant reductions in child mortality rates in recent years, Nepal still faces chronic malnutrition among its children and has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. According to the 2003 Human Development Report, 540 mothers died per 100,000 live births during 1985 — 2001 in Nepal, which is high even for a developing country. Moreover, 1 in 2 Nepalese children is light for its age and height, and 1 in 10 is short for its age (NDHS, 1996). Given that 80% of the deliveries in Nepal take place at home without any traditional, let alone professional, …

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research
One of the leading challenges in public health today is moving forward as one whether we are part of academia, a clinical health setting, or a public health department, in order to improve health outcomes. Right now in the United States, the leading causes of death are caused from diseases that are preventable. We also face a steady rise in health inequalities among those citizens with a lower socioeconomic status. Director of the CDC, Thomas Friedan addressed the Keeneland conference audience on the impact that public health initiatives have had on the health of our nation. Public health interventions have …

Historically individual and community health problems fed off one another, nonetheless the connection eventually became clear and individual health and population health solutions started to emerge and built off one another. Somewhere along the line, population health and patient health seemed to become divided by a brighter line into 2 separate realms, few of us crossing from one to the otherToday we are looking out for the good of our respective communities. As hospitals move from volume-based payments to value-based payments, they are more concerned about the connection between population health and their own efforts to improve outcomes, care coordination …
Assessing The Feasibility And Perceptions Of Health Services For Refugees Of Resettlement Organizations, Heidi Jean Worabo
Assessing The Feasibility And Perceptions Of Health Services For Refugees Of Resettlement Organizations, Heidi Jean Worabo
Dissertations
Background: Since 1975 the U.S. has resettled 2.6 million refugees who had to flee from their home countries. Many refugee resettlement organizations have developed different models of innovation to promote a smooth transition between previous foreign refugee camps to U.S. communities so that refugees swiftly become economically and socially self-sufficient. Providing refugees with health benefits and resources has been foremost priority upon arrival as they try to overcome health care barriers. Yet there is a lack of literature examining the impact of these health services and how they are perceived by the program recipients. Purpose: This scholarly project aimed to …

Racial And Ethnic Health Disparities In Incarcerated Populations, Meghan E. Borysova, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Dawood H. Sultan, Arthur R. Williams
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Alarming disparities in population health and wellness in the United States have led to multi-disciplinary research efforts to create health equity. Identifying disparities, elucidating the etiological bases of disparities, and implementing solutions to eliminate disparities are part of the U.S. national health agenda. Racial and ethnic disparities have been identified throughout the cancer control continuum, in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and a multitude of other conditions. The causes of disparities are complex, condition specific, and conjectured to result from combinations of biological and socio-behavioral factors. Racial and ethnic health disparities within the vast incarcerated communities have been excluded from most studies, …

Building Trust And Collaboration With Rural Minorities: Experiences With Minority Farmers In The Mississippi Delta, Ari Mwachofi
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
The paper focuses on the question “What research approach is effective in building trust with minority farmers?” The question is answered through a documentation of researchers’ experiences building trust and collaboration with minority farmers in the lower Mississippi Delta. The researchers applied two research paradigms -logical positivism and paradigm of praxis. The logical positivism research approach was met with mistrust and open animosity and had to be abandoned for one based on the paradigm of praxis. Through this approach, and cognizant of the historical-social-political context, the researchers included insiders from the focus population as collaborators and researchers and succeeded in …

BACKGROUND:
Muscle protein turnover regulation during cancer cachexia is being rapidly defined, and skeletal muscle mitochondria function appears coupled to processes regulating muscle wasting. Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity and the expression of proteins regulating mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics are disrupted in severely cachectic ApcMin/+ mice. It has not been determined if these changes occur at the onset of cachexia and are necessary for the progression of muscle wasting. Exercise and anti-cytokine therapies have proven effective in preventing cachexia development in tumor bearing mice, while their effect on mitochondrial content, biogenesis and dynamics is not well understood. The purposes of …

Risk Governance Of Genetically Modified Organisms In Europe And China, Wen Xiang
Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads
Biotechnology may provide a variety of societal benefits but may also threaten established interests and values, and human and environmental well-being. The safety of GM crops and foods is an issue that causes great public concern and stringent regulation in European countries and several developing countries. Risk governance of GMOs is required to facilitate the commercialization of the biotechnology and also to act as a mechanism of controlling potential risk.
It is generally recognized that the governance shall be done on the basis of a risk analysis framework. Risk analysis can be broadly defined as an integrated process consisting of …

Greening The Au Economy- Adapting To Climate Change Along A Low Carbon Development Pathway, Michelle Van Der Walt
Global Environmental Law at a Crossroads
According to the United Nations Human Development Report of 2007 climate change is the defining human development challenge of the 21st Century. One of the major global contributors towards climate change is green house gas (GHG) emissions resulting from energy use connected with the combustion of fossil fuels. On account of its low per capita energy consumption, Africa contributes relatively little towards over-all energy related GHG emissions. Notwithstanding, the global effects of climate change will impact negatively on the developmental path of the African continent in areas such as agriculture; access to fresh water; biodiversity; food security and health thereby …
