Planning Phase Of Population-Specific Healthy Lifestyle Program, Mary M. Moore
DNP and Student Works
Childhood overweight and obesity in the United States are significant health problems that have a negative impact on a child's physical and psychological well-being and that generate an extra financial burden for those affected due to health care costs. The current evidence-base for treatment of childhood overweight and obesity recommends a moderate- to high-intensity healthy lifestyle program of physical activity, healthy diet, and behavioral modification. The purpose of this descriptive, multi-method inquiry was to identify the perceived barriers to a healthy lifestyle for a population of elementary school students, ages 6 to 13 years, as the basis for the development …

Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe
Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
In the United States (U.S.), immigrants are among the fastest growing populations of all communities. Today, they comprise approximately 11% of the total U.S. population. Forty-three percent of immigrants are without insurance. They are also associated with higher numbers of untreated medical conditions, fewer interactions with the health care system, and receiving health care through emergency departments (ER). The consequences of these practices include increases in health care costs, changes from preventive care to emergency treatment, delays in identifying illnesses until later, and higher disease prevalence. Case managers are frequently faced with immigrants' concerns regarding access to care and prevention …

Food for Health: Publications
The involvement of the gut microbiota in metabolic disorders, and the ability of whole grains to affect both host metabolism and gut microbial ecology, suggest that some benefits of whole grains are mediated through their effects on the gut microbiome. Nutritional studies that assess the effect of whole grains on both the gut microbiome and human physiology are needed. We conducted a randomized cross-over trial with four-week treatments in which 28 healthy humans consumed a daily dose of 60 g of whole-grain barley (WGB), brown rice (BR), or an equal mixture of the two (BR+WGB), and characterized their impact on …

Potential Of Great Egrets To Be Vectors For The Transmission Of S Virulent Strain Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Between Channel Catfish Culture Pond, Madison Mccall Jubirt
Potential Of Great Egrets To Be Vectors For The Transmission Of S Virulent Strain Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Between Channel Catfish Culture Pond, Madison Mccall Jubirt
Theses and Dissertations
Aeromonas hydrophila is a Gram-negative, rod shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium that is ubiquitous to freshwater and slightly brackish aquatic environments and can cause infections in fish, humans, reptiles, and avian species. Recent severe outbreaks of disease in catfish aquaculture have been associated with a highly virulent Aeromonas hydrophila strain (VAH) that is genetically distinct from less virulent strains. Given that A. hydrophila is known to infect birds, we hypothesized that fish eating birds may serve as a reservoir for VAH and spread the pathogen by flying to uninfected ponds. Great Egrets were used in this transmission model because these wading …

Measurement Of The Respiratory Quotient Of Peat, Jake Nelson
Measurement Of The Respiratory Quotient Of Peat, Jake Nelson
Hydroponics/Soilless Media
Respiratory quotient (RQ) is the ratio of CO2 produced to O2 consumed by an organism. Complete respiration of glucose will give an RQ of 1 as described by the formula CnH2nOn+nO2→nCO2+nH2O. The respiration of molecules with lower oxygen content, such as lipids, give RQ values of less than one, whereas in cases of anaerobic metabolism, an increase in biomass or the respiration of substances such as humic, oxalic and citric acids the respiratory quotient can be greater than one. In complex systems such as soil, Dilly …

Present And Potential Future Distribution Of Common Vampire Bats In The Americas And The Associated Risk To Cattle, Dana N. Lee, Monica Papeş, Ronald A. Van Den Bessche
KIP Articles
Success of the cattle industry in Latin America is impeded by the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, through decreases in milk production and mass gain and increased risk of secondary infection and rabies. We used ecological niche modeling to predict the current potential distribution of D. rotundus and the future distribution of the species for the years 2030, 2050, and 2080 based on the A2, A1B, and B1 climate scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We then combined the present day potential distribution with cattle density estimates to identify areas where cattle are at higher risk for the …
The Relationship Between Liv-1 And E-Cadherin (Cdh1) In Prostate Cancer Cells, Lei Cao
The Relationship Between Liv-1 And E-Cadherin (Cdh1) In Prostate Cancer Cells, Lei Cao
Master's Theses
BACKGROUND
The zinc importer LIV-1 is widely distributed, mainly in hormonally controlled tissues. Attention has focused on its role in breast cancer, especially its regulation by estrogen and epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its link to the Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) marker, E-cadherin (CDH1). EMT is important for tumor progression and metastasis. CDH1 expression is under complex control, including by two transcriptional repressors, Snail and Slug. Contrast to CDH1, elevated MMP-9 expression has been linked to increased metastasis and tumor stage.
METHODS
The role of LIV-1 in prostate cancer cell lines, LNCaP and DU145 was investigated. Cells were treated with or …
