Crossfit Effectiveness On Fitness Levels And Demonstration Of Successful Program Objectives, Christine Jeffery
Crossfit Effectiveness On Fitness Levels And Demonstration Of Successful Program Objectives, Christine Jeffery
Student Theses and Dissertations
CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program created by Greg Glassman which adheres to three fitness standards: 1) there are ten general physical skills, 2) concept of a "hopper", i.e. being able to perform any skill when asked, and 3) training must occur is all three metabolic pathways, ATP-PCr, glycolytic, & aerobic systems. The purpose of this study was to first assess CrossFit effectiveness and also evaluate the third fitness standard through indirect measures. Thirty seven participants, both male and female participated in the study. Participants were divided based on questionnaire results into two groups, CrossFit and control (follow …
Health And Religious Commitment Among College Students: The Effects Of Health Behavior, Mental Health, And Social Support, Monica Yvette Jones
Health And Religious Commitment Among College Students: The Effects Of Health Behavior, Mental Health, And Social Support, Monica Yvette Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Empirical findings supporting the connection between religion and spirituality and health have been consistently found in the literature, whereas the factors explaining this relationship have lacked clarity. The present study sought to explore this relationship and establish health behavior, mental health, and social support as mediating factors to the proposed association between religious commitment and physical health. Physical health was measured by a number of indicators: body mass index, self-reported medical conditions, prescription drug use, over-the-counter medication usage, and problem use of drugs and alcohol. A sample of 150 college students from a university in Central Virginia participated in this …

Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas
Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas
Anthropology
Examination of 11 metric mandibular traits was conducted on data collected from several Jōmon and Okhotsk sites for the purpose of analyzing potential impacts of dietary differences on mandibular morphology for these groups. Based on the dietary history of the populations and their respective regions, Middle Jōmon (5,000 - 3,000 BP) sites would share comparable robusticities across all regions based on social and economic continuity as a stable climate resulted in abundant dietary resources which fostered a growth in population in the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido. As the climate cooled in the Late/Final Jōmon (4,000 - 2,000 BP), …
Public Use Of Local Foods In The Tanana Valley: Understandings Of Producers And Low-Income Community Members, Rachel Aleksandra Garcia
Public Use Of Local Foods In The Tanana Valley: Understandings Of Producers And Low-Income Community Members, Rachel Aleksandra Garcia
Natural Resources
This thesis explores factors that affect local food use in the Tanana Valley region of Alaska. Alaskan public discourses increasingly link local food production to a more sustainable and secure state and community food supply. However, current local food system development in the United States is marked by signs of socially unequal distribution of the benefits of local food. In Spring 2011, semi - structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with agricultural producers and community members affiliated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). Results show that …
Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch
Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch
Biological Sciences
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska supports a large population of moose that lives in and around the urban and industrial development of Anchorage. This study evaluates the body condition of adult female moose on JBER and calculates the relative nutritional value of habitat for planning development and for mitigating the effects of development on this population. Body condition of moose on JBER was similar to that of other populations of moose in Alaska. Our nutritional model predicted that shrublands could support 11-81 times more moose than any other habitat on JBER. Activity patterns of JBER moose were similar to those …
The First Year College Experience: Predictors Of Natural Mentoring Relationships & Students' Academic Outcomes, Luciano Berardi
The First Year College Experience: Predictors Of Natural Mentoring Relationships & Students' Academic Outcomes, Luciano Berardi
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Literature on college mentoring suggests that mentoring relationships has a positive effect on college students’ outcomes (Crisp & Cruz, 2009; Jacobi, 1991). The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of parental attachment and help-seeking strategies in the number of mentoring relationships reported by college students and the role of mentoring in students’ adjustment to the first year transition to college. Moos’ (2002) theoretical framework is used to root the study on an ecological viewpoint of college transition, because it proposes that individual characteristics and the environment thought which a person transitions affect one another and influence individual …
Youth Creating Sustainable Communities In Rural Alaska, Irmelin Gram-Hanssen
Youth Creating Sustainable Communities In Rural Alaska, Irmelin Gram-Hanssen
Arctic and Northern Studies
In this thesis I discuss the ability of the people of Igiugig to define their strengths and vulnerabilities as a village, and their ability to create innovative solutions in their conscious efforts to become a more sustainable village now and in the future. I argue that this process provides the village of Igiugig with a high degree of self-determination and increases its ability to move into the future on its own terms rather than terms defined solely by world politics and economics. A key component of Igiugig's process of becoming more sustainable is the accommodation and empowerment of its youth. …
Feeding Ecology Of Larval And Juvenile Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) And Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) In The Southeastern Bering Sea, Wesley Wayne Strasburger
Feeding Ecology Of Larval And Juvenile Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) And Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) In The Southeastern Bering Sea, Wesley Wayne Strasburger
Fisheries
Poor recruitment success during warm years (e.g., 2001-2005) was hypothesized to lead to reduced gadid recruitment in the southeastern Bering Sea. These groundfishes are of particular importance, both commercially and ecologically in the southeastern Bering Sea. The spatial and temporal overlap of early life stages of walleye pollock and Pacific cod may explain their strongly correlated recruitment trends in the southeastern Bering Sea. The goal of this study was to compare feeding patterns of larval and juvenile walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) and Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) in the southeastern Bering Sea, and to assess the possibility of prey resource competition. …

Locust Dynamics: Behavioral Phase Change And Swarming, Chad M. Topaz, Maria R. D'Orsogna, Leah Edelstein-Keshet, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Locusts exhibit two interconvertible behavioral phases, solitarious and gregarious. While solitarious individuals are repelled from other locusts, gregarious insects are attracted to conspecifics and can form large aggregations such as marching hopper bands. Numerous biological experiments at the individual level have shown how crowding biases conversion towards the gregarious form. To understand the formation of marching locust hopper bands, we study phase change at the collective level, and in a quantitative framework. Specifically, we construct a partial integrodifferential equation model incorporating the interplay between phase change and spatial movement at the individual level in order to predict the dynamics of …

A Sustainable Seafood Traceability System In Costa Rica: Development And Implementation, Nancy A. Olsen
A Sustainable Seafood Traceability System In Costa Rica: Development And Implementation, Nancy A. Olsen
Working Papers
The global seafood industry currently lacks a standardized, widespread method to easily trace the chain of custody of products that they purchase. With global overfishing leading to declining fish stocks around the world, it is vital for seafood providers to have the ability to identify and buy products from sustainable fisheries that are well managed, target abundant species, and fish in environmentally responsible ways. A tracing system that incorporates a combination of online inventory reporting and physical product tagging, augmented by independent supply chain verification, will give companies and consumers the information they need to make sustainable seafood choices.

A Ranksum Statistics Based Framework To Decipher Transcription Regulation, Iuan-Bor Chen
A Ranksum Statistics Based Framework To Decipher Transcription Regulation, Iuan-Bor Chen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The unbiased generation of specific and meaningful hypotheses from the deluge of data generated by modern genomic methods remains a challenge. These datasets require increasing level of expertise to analyze fully, and are often underutilized even in the originating lab. It would be desirable to have a computational strategy that is easy to implement, robust against outliers and missing data, and broadly applicable to diverse experimental designs. In this dissertation, I present a set of ranksum statistics-based analytical methods as a framework to extract testable hypotheses from large and complex datasets. To illustrate its utility, this framework was applied to …
Rapid Detection Of Streptococcus Mutans In Saliva, Catherine E. Holtman
Rapid Detection Of Streptococcus Mutans In Saliva, Catherine E. Holtman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Documentation exists that mothers can pass the cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans to their infants. The newest technology to identify Streptococcus mutans is a rapid detection saliva test. Two hundred patients above the age of 18 were targeted using random selection in a Louisville, Kentucky dental office. Patients signed an informed consent form and were given a qualifying questionnaire. Patients received 2 bitewing x-rays and a charted DMFT index and were administered the saliva test. While the null hypothesis was rejected using the chi square test, the results were inconclusive due to expected values. However, other chi square results revealed that …

As The Crow Flies: An Underrepresentation Of Food Deserts In The Rural Appalachian Mountains, Kasie Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diet and dietary related health outcomes such as obesity and diabetes are major public health concerns. While personal choice and dietary behaviors are major influences on how an individual eats, the environment influences these choices and behaviors. The nutrition environment is one key influence and its relationship with food choice, behaviors, and socioeconomic influences is complex. Within the structure of the nutrition environment, food access and socioeconomic status compound influencing nutrition behavior and food choice.
Food deserts are defined as geographic region of low access to healthy affordable food in low income areas. The USDA developed a system for the …

The Pathophysiological Importance Of Nicotinamide Phosphoribosyltransferase As A Key Nad Biosynthesis Enzyme In Metabolic Homeostasis, Myeong Jin Yoon
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase: NAMPT) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the NAD biosynthesis pathway in mammals. Interestingly, NAMPT has intra- and extracellular forms: iNAMPT and eNAMPT, respectively), and eNAMPT is secreted from adipose tissue as one of the adipokines. However, the mechanism underlying the regulation of eNAMPT secretion has not been fully understood yet. Here, we have demonstrated that deacetylation on NAMPT by SIRT1 controls its secretion from adipocytes. iNAMPT is acetylated in both brown and white adipose tissues, and the level of acetylation of iNAMPT is decreased during fasting when Sirtuins are activated. We also found that enhancement of eNAMPT secretion …
Profiles Of Early Family Risk And The Socioemotional Functioning Of Infants And Toddlers, Lisa Emily Jobe-Shields
Profiles Of Early Family Risk And The Socioemotional Functioning Of Infants And Toddlers, Lisa Emily Jobe-Shields
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Research consistently indicates that exposure to a range of early family risk factors is associated with compromised social and emotional functioning in early childhood, but less is known about configurations of multiple risk factors within families. The present study investigated a range of risk factors representing family structure (marital status, child's father in the home), sociodemographic context (maternal age, household income, maternal education, and insurance status), and maternal psychosocial functioning (maternal postnatal depression and prenatal physical and psychological relationship conflict) from a person-centered approach in a diverse, urban sample of 819 mothers. Latent variable mixture modeling was used to identify …

The Child And Adult Care Food Program And Food Insecurity, Colleen Heflin, Irma Arteaga, Sara Gable
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
High rates of food insecurity are a significant problem in the United States. It is currently estimated that more than 48.8 million people live in food insecure households, meaning that at some time during the previous year, they were unable to acquire or were uncertain of having enough food to meet basic needs due to inadequate household resources (Coleman-Jensen, Nord, Andrews, & Carlson, 2011). Rates of food insecurity are substantially higher among those in households with incomes below the poverty line (40.2%) and in households with children headed by a single woman (35.1%). Levels of food insecurity increased across U.S. …
