Inhibitory Effect Of Parsley (Petroselinum Crispum) Juice Against Some Urinary Pathogens In Vitro, Khalida Kareem Al-Kareemi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Information's on the potency of many medical plants against microorganisms are scanty, and in the current wave of antimicrobial resistance against chemotherapeutic drugs, there is a need to search for plants that could be resistance-free and affordable. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) against uro-pathogens and to compare with the effect of some drugs used for the treatment of urinary tract infection caused by different Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of thirty eight Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coli ,Proteus sp.,Enterobacter …

Evaluation Of Serum Magnesium, Chromium, Vanadium, And Selenium Levels In Type 2 Diabetic Patients In Sulaimania City, Mohammed Omer Mohammed, Ahmed Mohammad Abdullah, Shara Kamil Nizamaddin
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder; a clinical syndrome which occurs due to absolute or relative insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Direct association of trace elements, such as magnesium in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, alteration in the metabolism of these minerals has been demonstrated in diabetes in many studies. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate magnesium, chromium, vanadium, and selenium levels in the serum of type 2 diabetic subjects. METHODS: The present study was conducted on fifty type 2 diabetic patients, and thirty age-sex-matched healthy controls. In groups, those having renal failure, lipemic serum, or using diuretics, antibiotics, …
Prognostic Significance Of Serum Albumin Levels In Patients With Systolic Heart Failure, Muataz Fawzi Hussein
Prognostic Significance Of Serum Albumin Levels In Patients With Systolic Heart Failure, Muataz Fawzi Hussein
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Hypoalbuminemia is considered as poor prognostic factor in patients with certain chronic diseases, such as cancer and end-stage renal failure. Low serum albumin is common in patients with heart failure; nevertheless, the relationship between serum albumin and heart failure prognosis has not been well verified. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the effect of serum albumin level on prognosis of patients with systolic heart failure. METHODS: This study included 250 patients with systolic heart failure who were admitted to Baghdad teaching hospital between February 2008 and April 2010. Patients were divided into groups based on presence of hypoalbuminemia (≤3.4 g/dL). RESULTS: …

Predator-Induced Fleeing Behaviors In Phytoplankton: A New Mechanism For Harmful Algal Bloom Formation?, Elizabeth L. Harvey, Susanne Menden-Deuer
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
In the plankton, heterotrophic microbes encounter and ingest phytoplankton prey, which effectively removes >50% of daily phytoplankton production in the ocean and influences global primary production and biochemical cycling rates. Factors such as size, shape, nutritional value, and presence of chemical deterrents are known to affect predation pressure. Effects of movement behaviors of either predator or prey on predation pressure, and particularly fleeing behaviors in phytoplankton are thus far unknown. Here, we quantified individual 3D movements, population distributions, and survival rates of the toxic phytoplankton species, Heterosigma akashiwo in response to a ciliate predator and predator-derived cues. We observed predator-induced …

Reflections Of Personal Experiences In Lima, The La Joya Of Peru, Gail S. Scott
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
This article reflects my faculty professional development travel abroad prodigious experiences encountered as a traveler to Lima, Peru. My travel was sponsored in part by the Kennesaw State University (KSU) Year of Peru initiative and the KSU Psychology Department. The Peruvian global engagement experience enriched my future academic pursuits of teaching, research, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and professional faculty development. Tangentially, the Peru experience also intensified and heightened my appreciation for Lima’s diversified history, culture, and people.

1. Herbivorous insects often have close associations with specific host plants, and their preferences for mating and ovipositing on a specific host-plant species can reproductively isolate populations, facilitating ecological speciation. Volatile emissions from host plants can play a major role in assisting herbivores to locate their natal host plants and thus facilitate assortative mating and host-specific oviposition.
2. The present study investigated the role of host-plant volatiles in host fidelity and oviposition preference of the gall-boring, inquiline beetle, Mordellistena convicta LeConte (Coleoptera: Mordellidae), using Y-tube olfactometers. Previous studies suggest that the gall-boring beetle is undergoing sequential host-associated divergence by utilising …

Background: There is no proven medical approach to attenuating expansion and rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). One approach that is currently being investigated is the use of doxycycline. Despite being primarily used as an antimicrobial drug, doxycycline has been proposed to function in reducing AAA expansion. Doxycycline is effective in reducing the formation in the most commonly used mouse models of AAAs when administered prior to the initiation of the disease. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effects of doxycycline on established AAAs when it was administered at a dose that produces therapeutic serum …

Aspm And The Evolution Of Cerebral Cortical Size In A Community Of New World Monkeys, Fernando A. Villanea, George H. Perry, Gustavo A. Gutiérrez-Espeleta, Nathaniel J. Dominy
Dartmouth Scholarship
The ASPM (abnormal spindle-like microcephaly associated) gene has been proposed as a major determinant of cerebral cortical size among primates, including humans. Yet the specific functions of ASPM and its connection to human intelligence remain controversial. This debate is limited in part by a taxonomic focus on Old World monkeys and apes. Here we expand the comparative context of ASPM sequence analyses with a study of New World monkeys, a radiation of primates in which enlarged brain size has evolved in parallel in spider monkeys (genus Ateles) and capuchins (genus Cebus). The primate community of Costa Rica is perhaps a …
