Interactive Learning Online: Challenges And Opportunities, Mihaela C. Sabin, Amber Settle, Becky Rutherford
Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship
Since the early 1990s online education and online learning systems have held the promise of increasing instructional productivity and reducing costs without sacrificing educational quality. There is no evidence to date that such promise has materialized. The impetus of the newest developments with free online courses to hundreds of thousands of students might drastically transform how we teach more and better with less. The innovation that prompted this panel is called Interactive Learning Online (ILO), and has the distinctive feature of highly interactive, machine-guided instruction that can be scaled to accommodate a large number of students who benefit from targeted …

Simon Salinas, currently district 3 supervisor, describes his life as one of twelve children of migrant farm workers from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Raised in both Texas and California following the seasons, Simon shares stories of his family during the 1950’s -70’s, focusing on issues of social injustices, education, activism and validation of the Mexican American experience. I start the interview by asking about his family background and experiences as migrant farmer workers. As time predictability is critical to hard real-time systems, it is not only necessary to accurately estimate the worst-case execution time (WCET) of the real-time tasks but also desirable to improve either the WCET of the tasks or time predictability of the system, because the real-time tasks with lower WCETs are easy to schedule and more likely to meat their deadlines. As a real-time system is an integration of software and hardware, the optimization can be achieved through two ways: software optimization and time-predictable architectural support.
