Administrative Issues Journal

Technological and pedagogical advances in distance education have accentuated the necessity for higher education to keep pace regarding institutional infrastructures. Each infrastructure—driven by a common mission to provide quality learning—interprets quality according to standards established by various governmental and accrediting entities. Staying ahead of the technological and pedagogical changes have been challenging for many public higher education institutions, which are continuing to struggle with online course design and delivery modes (Suttle, 2010). Online universities, however, have aggressively and strategically responded to technological and pedagogical shifts across institutional, departmental, program, and course levels according to their institutional mission, vision, and core …

The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill Oct 2012

The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Watching Barack Obama’s presidential victory in November 2008, nearly every observer seemed to grasp the historic importance of the moment. Our nation, born amid ideals of human equality while economically tethered to black slavery—and then for a century more to federally-condoned, nationwide discrimination—had just elected its first black commander in chief. Clearly, America had taken another huge stride toward living out the meaning of its creed. After all, Obama unexpectedly beat Hillary Clinton in very white states like Idaho and Iowa to win his party’s nomination. Then he picked up some unlikely victories within the former Confederacy, namely Virginia, Florida …

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio Oct 2012

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio

Theses

This thesis develops an approach for detecting behavioral anomalies using tracks of pedestrians, including specified threat tracks. The application area is installation security with focus on monitoring the entrances of these installations. The approach specifically allows operator interaction to specify threats and to interactively adjust the system parameters depending on the context of the situation. This research has discovered physically meaningful features that are developed and organized in a manner so that features can be systematically added or deleted depending on the situation and operator preference. The features can be used with standard classifiers such as the one class support …

Pam Meal Ticket Cookbook, Lexa Walsh Oct 2012

Pam Meal Ticket Cookbook, Lexa Walsh

Meal Ticket

Created by Lexa Walsh and the staff of Portland Art Museum

Meal Ticket was a monthly silo-busting luncheon with the staff of the Museum. The luncheon provided a level playing field for staff of every department, in a boardroom usually saved for Trustees and upper management, in an organization that normally has a strict hierarchy. Anyone was welcome to a home cooked meal, replete with seating charts and wine glasses. Guests were seated to encourage cross- departmental exchange, for example seating someone from security across from someone from accounting, someone from education across from someone from events. We employed a …

The Crisis Of Tourism Sector After The 25th January Egyptian Revolution: Case Study Traveline Egypt, Zeinab Shawky Younis, Randa F. Elbedawy

Business Administration

The dawn of the 25th January Revolution 2011 aroused to put Egypt into turmoil of both political and economic unrest. The Importance of this study arises from its contribution at both the academic and practical levels as it tends to reflect the importance of tourism sector for the growth and the sustainability of the economic development of Egypt, adding to the fact that …

Monosynaptic Functional Connectivity In Cerebral Cortex During Wakefulness And Under Graded Levels Of Anesthesia, Jeannette A. Vizuete, Siveshigan Pillay, Kamran Diba, Kristina M. Ropella, Anthony G. Hudetz

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The balance between excitation and inhibition is considered to be of significant importance for neural computation and cognitive function. Excitatory and inhibitory functional connectivity in intact cortical neuronal networks in wakefulness and graded levels of anesthesia has not been systematically investigated. We compared monosynaptic excitatory and inhibitory spike transmission probabilities using pairwise cross-correlogram (CCG) analysis. Spikes were measured at 64 sites in the visual cortex of rats with chronically implanted microelectrode arrays during wakefulness and three levels of anesthesia produced by desflurane. Anesthesia decreased the number of active units, the number of functional connections, and the strength of excitatory connections. …
