Nanobarcoding: Detecting Nanoparticles In Biological Samples Using In Situ Polymerase Chain Reaction, Trisha Eustaquio, James F. Leary
Nanobarcoding: Detecting Nanoparticles In Biological Samples Using In Situ Polymerase Chain Reaction, Trisha Eustaquio, James F. Leary
Birck and NCN Publications
Background: Determination of the fate of nanoparticles (NPs) in a biological system, or NP biodistribution, is critical in evaluating an NP formulation for nanomedicine. Current methods to determine NP biodistribution are greatly inadequate, due to their limited detection thresholds. Herein, proof of concept of a novel method for improved NP detection based on in situ polymerase chain reaction (ISPCR), coined "nanobarcoding," is demonstrated. Methods: Nanobarcoded superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NB-SPIONs) were characterized by dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and hyperspectral imaging - measurements. Cellular uptake of Cy5-labeled NB-SPIONs (Cy5-NB-SPIONs) was imaged by confocal microscopy. The feasibility of the nanobarcoding method …

The Tax Expenditure Budget Is A Zombie Accountant, Steven A. Dean

Like a student blocking his access to the internet to help him study, governments across the globe rely on commitment devices to generate fiscal discipline. From the collapse of the Congressional Supercommittee in the United States to the near-cataclysmic failure of a mechanism designed to prevent the European Union debt crisis, the evidence suggests that faith in such commitment devices is misplaced. This Article focuses on one such device that stubbornly refuses to stay dead: the tax expenditure budget. Created to guard against abuse by publicizing the costs of tax subsidies then resurrected as a bean counter, the tax expenditure …
Interstate Transmission Challenges For Renewable Energy: A Federalism Mismatch, Alexandra B. Klass, Elizabeth J. Wilson
Interstate Transmission Challenges For Renewable Energy: A Federalism Mismatch, Alexandra B. Klass, Elizabeth J. Wilson
Vanderbilt Law Review
It is impossible to talk about developing renewable energy resources in the United States without also talking about developing electric transmission infrastructure. More specifically, the transmission-planning strategies that may have worked in the past are no longer effective to integrate new sources of renewable energy into the transmission grid. Transmission lines were historically built to link large stationary power plants to nearby electricity demand centers like cities. For renewable energy, however, state mandates and policies are driving investment in wind-and to a lesser extent solar-energy, creating a need for new transmission lines to link these dispersed resources with electric load …
A Gap Analysis Of Meteorological Requirements For Commercial Space Operators, Nicholas J. Stapleton
A Gap Analysis Of Meteorological Requirements For Commercial Space Operators, Nicholas J. Stapleton
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Commercial space companies will soon be the primary method of launching people and supplies into orbit. Among the critical aspects of space launches are the meteorological concerns. Laws and regulations pertaining to meteorological considerations have been created to ensure the safety of the space industry and those living around spaceports; but, are they adequate? Perhaps the commercial space industry can turn to the commercial aviation industry to help answer that question. Throughout its history, the aviation industry has dealt with lessons learned from mishaps due to failures in understanding the significance of weather impacts on operations. Using lessons from the …

The Role Of The Yxxφ Motif In Cd82 Trafficking And Function, Mekel Marie Richardson
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
CD82, a tetraspanin, is a tumor metastasis suppressor. Tetraspanins are membrane spanning proteins that play critical roles in diverse biological and pathological processes, e.g., the regulation of cancer metastasis. CD82 is ubiquitously expressed in various types of tissues, but its expression becomes down-regulated or lost in a majority of metastatic tumors. It inhibits tumor metastasis without affecting primary tumor growth. Cancer patients whose tumors contain CD82 exhibit minimal metastasis. We know that CD82 functions as a tumor metastasis suppressor but the mechanism by which this occurs is largely unknown. CD82 can be found on the plasma membrane as well as …
Development Of The Sustained Release Analgesic Formulations For Rodents And A Novel In Vitro Model For Parenteral Formulations With The Character Of A Level A Ivivc, Jin Xu
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Laboratory animals are often subjected to various painful surgical procedures such as laparotomy, thoracotomy or orthopedic procedures as well as non-surgical procedures such as the induction of arthritis. Any procedure that causes pain in humans is assumed to cause pain in animals too. It is the ethical obligation of all research personnel to reduce or preferably eliminate pain and distress by using analgesics. Furthermore, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requires that appropriate anesthetics and/or analgesics must be used to minimize or eliminate pain and distress for animals undergoing painful procedures.
The oral administration route is the most …
Context And Its Role In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects , Joan E. Beaudoin
Context And Its Role In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects , Joan E. Beaudoin
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
In discussions surrounding digital preservation, context — those properties of an object related to its creation and preservation that make the object's origins, composition, and purpose clear — has been identified as a critical aspect of preservation metadata. Understanding a cultural object's context, in as much detail as possible, is necessary to the successful future use of that object, regardless of its form. The necessity of capturing data about the creation of digital resources and the technical details of the preservation process, has generally been agreed. Capturing many other contextual aspects — such as utility, history, curation, authenticity — that …

Digital Repositories And Open Access: Information Without Limits, Crystal Goldman, Silke P. Higgins
Faculty and Staff Publications
For many libraries, the Digital Repository has become the main storage center for materials created by the community they serve. Such materials can include important historical records, local newspapers, community newsletters, as well as articles, presentations, data sets, images, videos and other multimedia items. In this way, the repository takes on a central role in placing free, open access materials into the hands of the public.
While many repositories are currently managed by universities, their benefits reach beyond the walls of academia to include K-12 students as well as the public at large. Thus, all librarians are encouraged to utilize …

Cognitive And Social Factors Affecting The Use Of Wikipedia And Information Seeking, Siyoung Chung
Cognitive And Social Factors Affecting The Use Of Wikipedia And Information Seeking, Siyoung Chung
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, is the preferred choice among resources used by college students to meet their research needs. However, Wikipedia has been criticized for its low information quality, lack of accountability, inconsistency, and vulnerability to vandalism. Despite the warnings and concerns voiced by academia, online learning tools such as Wikipedia will continue their rise as major learning resource in today's classroom. Using a sample of 184 college students, the study proposed theoretical models to test the effects of internal beliefs, motivations, and social influences on Wikipedia use and information-seeking, and further empirically tested those models. The findings of …

Election Law, Christopher R. Nolen, Jeff Palmore
University of Richmond Law Review
Other than a few controversial measures, the 2012 Virginia General Assembly made modest changes to Virginia's laws re-garding the administration and conduct of elections. Most activity in this arena concerned issues that had significant federal election implications: specifically, the adoption of changes to strengthen Virginia's existing voter identification law and the enactment of a congressional redistricting plan. This article surveys developments in Virginia election law for the latter part of 2011and the 2012 General Assembly session. The focus is on those statutory developments that have significance or general applicability to the implementation of Virginia's election laws. Consequently, not every election-related …

We examine learning outcomes in intelligence analysts--the likelihood to shift intelligence analyst's mental models--within policy-making dyads of analysts and decision-makers operating in complex, high-stake contexts. We ask to what extent do properties of information present in the environment--information overload and equivocality--and two behavioral dispositions present in the dyad--one possessed by the decision maker (feedback) and another by the analyst (perspective taking)--influence analyst's learning outcomes. In particular, we focus on the combined impact of three analyst's behavioral responses--filtering, dialogue and networking--to either mitigate the negative effects of overload and equivocality, and/or improve the potential positive effects of feedback and perspective taking. …

Comparative Kinetic Analysis Of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Cytidylyltransferase From Enterococcus Faecalis And Listeria Monocytogenes, Ashley N. Merici, Jon A. Friesen
Faculty Publications – Chemistry
Background: Glycerol 3-phosphate cytidylyltransferase (GCT) is an enzyme central to the synthesis of teichoic acids, components of the cell wall in gram positive bacteria. Catalysis by GCT from Enterococcus faecalis and Listeria monocytogenes has been investigated and catalytic properties compared. Material/Methods: The genes encoding GCT were cloned from genomic DNA and recombinant proteins expressed in E. coli and purified. Enzyme assays were used to determine kinetic constants k(cat) and K-m. Chemical crosslinking provided a means to assess quaternary structure of each GCT. Results: Recombinant Enterococcus faecalis GCT had an apparent k(cat) value of 1.51 s(-1) and apparent K-m values of …
A Framework For Contextual Metadata Used In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects, Joan E. Beaudoin
A Framework For Contextual Metadata Used In The Digital Preservation Of Cultural Objects, Joan E. Beaudoin
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
The quality and the quantity of contextual information found in the descriptive metadata associated with digital representations of cultural objects are frequently inadequate for assuring that users will understand the nature of both the original object that has been digitally preserved, and the digital representation itself. This paper proposes and defines a framework for ensuring that relevant contextual metadata is easily collected and maintained. After identifying and describing eight important dimensions of context, the paper shows how implementing the framework, through a series of questions and prompts, results in a descriptive metadata record that accommodates the important aspects of an …
