This thesis emphasizes the visibility of the translator as an agent who promotes cultural exchange. This project includes a translation of Jennifer Egan's short story "Spanish Winter" from her collection Emerald City and Other Stories (1996). It also presents the theoretical frame, the critical analysis, and the pitfalls of the translation. "Spanish Winter" is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a troubled US American, divorced woman who travels by herself to Spain in the winter. The importance of this text lies in the quest for identity of a female character whose journey symbolizes a search for herself. This …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The turtle is a unique model of anoxic survival. The turtle's brain can tolerate total oxygen deprivation for hours to days as well as prevent high levels of mitochondrial-derived free radicals upon re-oxygenation. Because of its ability to prevent elevated free radical generation, the turtle has also become recognized as a model of exceptional longevity. We are employing the turtle model for an investigation into the regulation of a key antioxidant enzyme system - methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msrs), primarily MsrA and MsrB. The Msr system is capable of reversing oxidation of methionines in proteins and Msr subtypes have been implicated …

Asset Identification Using Image Descriptors, Reena Ursula Friedel Jan 2012

Asset Identification Using Image Descriptors, Reena Ursula Friedel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Asset management is a time consuming and error prone process. Information Technology (IT) personnel typically perform this task manually by visually inspecting assets to identify misplaced assets. If this process is automated and provided to IT personnel it would prove very useful in keeping track of assets in a server rack. A mobile based solution is proposed to automate this process. The asset management application on the tablet captures images of assets and searches an annotated database to identify the asset. We evaluate the matching performance and speed of asset matching using three different image feature descriptors. Methods to reduce …

Cake Is Not A Lie, Kimberly. Copeland Jan 2012

Cake Is Not A Lie, Kimberly. Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As puzzle-driven, character based games, Portal and Portal 2, developed by the Valve Corporation, are not only pioneering in their use of narrative, but they also revolutionize the function of aporia. This thesis explores the role of aporia and use of the narrative in the two video games. It will be argued that the games possess a rigid narrative structure, but while the narrative serves as a peripheral construction, there are other structures that contribute to the experience of gameplay. The research aims to determine how the games adapt narrative and use it in combination with other elements to move …

Rewriting History In Alejo Carpentier's The Kingdom Of This World And Michelle Cliff's Abeng, Tricia. Amiel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Traditional Caribbean history has been directed by and focused upon the conquerors who came to the region to colonize and seek profitable resources. Native Caribbean peoples and African slaves used to work the land have been silenced by traditional history so that it has become necessary for modern Caribbean thinkers to challenge that history and recreate it. Alejo Carpentier and Michelle Cliff challenge traditional Caribbean history in their texts, The Kingdom of This World and Abeng, respectively. Each of these texts rewrites traditional history to include the perspectives of natives and the slaves of Haiti and Jamaica. Traditional history is …

Roma Uncovered, Alexi M. Velez Jan 2012

Roma Uncovered, Alexi M. Velez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Roma people, often referred to by the derogatory misnomer of "gypsy," are an ethnic group plagued by (mis)representation in popular culture. Roma representations in cinema, literature, journalism, and other forms of popular culture have perpetuated a long history of Roma exclusion. This thesis aims to identify not only the many manifestations of Roma (mis)representation, but also apply anthropological theory as a means of analyzing the ramifications of such (mis)representations on the Roma people. This paper concludes with suggestions for an anthropologically informed methodology of representation, and hopes to challenge long standing stereotypes and misinformation about the Romani culture.

Role Of Advertising And Information Asymmetry On Firm Performance, Monica B. Fine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research linking marketing to financial outputs has been gaining significance in the marketing discipline. The pertinent questions are, therefore: how can marketing improve measures of firm performance and draw potential investors to the company, and where is the quantitative proof to back up these assertions? This research investigates the role of marketing expenditures in the context of initial public offerings (IPOs). The proposed theoretical framework comes from marketing and finance literature, and uses econometric models to test the hypotheses. First, we replicate the results of a previous study by Luo (2008) showing a relationship between the firm's pre-IPO marketing spending …

One Yard Shy Of Empowerment, Vividiana. Lieberman Jan 2012

One Yard Shy Of Empowerment, Vividiana. Lieberman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sports are a primary zone of masculinity and sports films are a popular genre. One is hard pressed to find many leading female roles as athletes in male-dominated sports storylines. The cinematic portrayal of women athletes represents social attitudes and values and whether or not the women's movement has been able to influence representations and, concomitantly, social understandings of women and athleticism. My discussion of films featuring female athletes begins with National Velvet (1944) and ends with Whip It (2008). By examining select sports films centered on all female teams, co-ed teams and individual female athletes, I show how their …

Novel Function Of Sjam-C In Promoting Cytoskeleton Rearrangement And Migration In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Anila Qureshi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Soluble form of Junctional adhesion molecule C (sJAM-C) has been identified to cause angiogenesis as well as chemotaxis in endothelial cells. However, the role of sJAM-C in the context of cancer has not been elucidated. Our atomic force microscopy (AFM) stiffness measurements of normal mammary epithelial cells (MCF 10A) have shown a two-fold decrease in cell's stiffness in response to sJAM-C. Changes in cell stiffness are indicative of modulations in a cell's mechanical properties. Our results indicated that sJAM-C increased the MCF 10A cell migration about two-fold and also promoted a three-fold increase in chemotaxis. Additionally, sJAM-C treatment resulted in …

Investigation Of The Role Of Pak6 Tumorigenesis, Joann Roberts Jan 2012

Investigation Of The Role Of Pak6 Tumorigenesis, Joann Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The function and role of PAK6, serine/threonone kinase, in cancer progressionhas not yet been clearly identified. Several studies reveal that PAK6 may participate in key changes contributing to cancer progression such as cell survival, cell motility, and invasiveness. Basedon the membrane localization of PAK6 in prostate and breast cancer cells,we speculated that PAK6 plays a rolein cancer progression cells by localizing on the membrane and modifying proteins linked to motility and proliferation. We isolated the raft domain of breast cancer cells expressing either wild type (WT), constitutively active (SN), or kinase dead PAK6 (KM) and found that PAK6 is a …

Is It My Fault My Fangs Come Out When I'M Turned On?", Ashley. Anderson Jan 2012

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis analyzes Pamela Swynford De Beaufort and Jessica Hamby from the provocative HBO series, True Blood, in order to determine what hegemonic ideologies are reinforced through their sexual representation in the series. Through analysis based on concepts of the "vagina dentata" and "monstrous feminine," and in determining whether they fall victim to the Madonna/wore dichotomy, the question of Pam and Jessica's autonomous existence falls under scrutiny - particularly in regards to their sexuality. Feminist scholarship is vital to this research in order to examine the often fetishized and marginalized sexuality of women who dare to exhibit transgressive behaviors. This …

College campuses can be large, confusing, and intimidating for new students and visitors. Finding the campus may be easy using a GPS unit or Google Maps directions, but this is not the case when you are actually on the campus. There is no service that provides directional assistance for the campus itself. This thesis proposes a driver assistant application running on an Android platform that can direct drivers to different buildings and parking lots in the campus. The application's user interface lets the user select a user type, a campus, and a destination through use of drop down menus and …

Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond Jan 2012

Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Evidence for conceptual semantics is well established in monkeys, however this basis of human language is less evident in the great apes. In order to study semantic communications in chimpanzees, I analyzed alarm calls produced towards a blimp as it was flying overhead. I then replayed a set of these alarm calls to the chimps on a different day. The chimps appeared to act in a manner consistent with the presence of the blimp. The calls they produced in response to the playback stimuli were nearly identical to the calls that were produced during the actual flyover. Though the data …

Cleavage Of Brain Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65 By Calpain Under Pathological Conditions, Chandana Buddhala Jan 2012

Cleavage Of Brain Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65 By Calpain Under Pathological Conditions, Chandana Buddhala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Brain glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter-amino butyric acid (GABA) from the substrate L-glutamic acid. Severe lapse in GABA neurotransmission is one of the etiologies documented in the manifestation of certain neurodegenerative diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease etc. Because GAD65 synthesizes GABA, any modulation of GAD65, therefore, has direct implications on the quanta of GABA released at the synapse. Hence, the major objective of this study was to focus on the regulation of GAD65, with special emphasis on investigating the proteolytic cleavage of fGAD65. Previously, we …

Crystallin/Shsp Is Required For Mitochondrial Function In Human Ocular Tissue, Rebecca. Mcgreal Jan 2012

Crystallin/Shsp Is Required For Mitochondrial Function In Human Ocular Tissue, Rebecca. Mcgreal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The central premise of this dissertation is that the small heat shock protein (sHSP), (Sa(BB-crystallin is essential for lens and retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cell function and oxidative stress defense. To date, the mechanism by which it confers protection is not known. We hypothesize that these functions could occur through its ability to protect mitochondrial function in lens and RPE cells. To test this hypothesis, we examined the expression of (Sa(BB-crystallin/sHSP in lens and RPE cells, we observed its localization in the cells, we examined translocation to the mitochondria in these cells upon oxidative stress treatment, we determined its ability …

Cultural Perspectives Among Children Of Guatemalan Maya Immigrants In Lake Worth, Florida, Tara. Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Every day children of Guatemalan Maya immigrants balance two cultures. They reside in The United States and attend American schools but are being raised by their Guatemalan Maya parents. They continually navigate between the two and are faced with challenges daily. Since these children are influenced by two cultures, my interest was primarily on the cultural perspectives of these children, more specifically: what effects does the new culture have on the old? Through volunteering at a Guatemalan Maya after-school program, interviewing and administering the Children's Apperception Test, results showed these children to be influenced by American culture. The biggest indicator, …

Determining The Subcellular Localization Of A Group Ii P21-Activated Kinase - Pak6, Ciny John Jan 2012

Determining The Subcellular Localization Of A Group Ii P21-Activated Kinase - Pak6, Ciny John

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

p-21-activated kinase 6 (PAK6) is a serine-threonine protein kinase originally identified as an Androgen Receptor (AR) interacting protein. In current study, we determined the subcellular localization of PAK6 through mutational analysis. We have found that the N-terminal CRIB domain is partly responsible for plasma membrane targeting, the region between amino acid residues #292 to #368 is functionally relevant to plasma membrane localization and that amino acid residues #119 through #190 are responsible for nuclear targeting of PAK6, in addition to a stretch of positively charged N-terminal residues (#2-#11) since mutants lacking this sequence mis-localizes to cytoplasm. In junction forming epithelial …

Does Size Really Matter, Jessica A. Cuksick Jan 2012

Does Size Really Matter, Jessica A. Cuksick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and spotted (Stenella frontalis) dolphins are sympatric species, resident to Little Bahama Bank, Bahamas. A unique, dynamic methodology quantified how interspecific aggression changed over time in terms of the individuals participating, context, and behaviors used. The timing of human observation relative to the onset of aggression did not result in differences in the proportion of behaviors observed. Highly intense behaviors were used most often. The synchronous state of spotted dolphin groups, not the presence alone, was a crucial factor in determining the onset and progression of aggression. When synchronous, spotted dolphins successfully dominated the larger bottlenose dolphins. …

Doing It For Themselves, Megan. Tomei Jan 2012

Doing It For Themselves, Megan. Tomei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Whereas male masturbation has generally been normalized by being the butt of friendly jokes and a popular subject in romantic comedies, the predominant discourse surrounding female masturbation, both in society and the movies, is silence and stigmatization. However, female masturbation is symbolically powerful because it signifies a female sexuality that is not dependent on male presence. This thesis seeks to explore depictions of female masturbation, specifically looking at how female characters who engage in autoeroticism are stigmatized, controlled or silenced. This thesis will also explore the minority of depictions that show the act as liberating in films like Pleasantville (1998) …

The study of ancient Egyptian monumental art is based on subjective and qualitative analyses by art historians and Egyptologists who use the change in stylistic trends as Dynastic chronological markers. The art of the ancient Egyptians is recognized the world over due to its specific and consistent style that lasted the whole of Dynastic Egypt. This artwork exhibits fractal qualities that support the applicability of applying fractal analysis as a quantitative and statistical tool to be used in this field. In this thesis, I show the fractality of ancient Egyptian monumental art by analyzing black and white line drawings of …

Gaze To Discover, Tabitha. Pennekamp Jan 2012

Gaze To Discover, Tabitha. Pennekamp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Gaze to discover is the approach a viewer should take as s/he encounters the work within this exhibition. The main idea is that the work should be interactive. Developing this interaction is the objective of each piece. To engage viewers to interact with a piece of art coincides with the ability to acquire their undivided attention. The realization that it is difficult for a viewer to have a tangible interaction with artwork in a gallery setting leads to asking the viewer to interact visually, "to look fixedly" - to gaze (Webster's Dictionary). Gazing at the work will direct the viewer …

Gender, Disability, And Literature In The Global South, Tulasi. Acharya Jan 2012

Gender, Disability, And Literature In The Global South, Tulasi. Acharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis explores gender, disability and literature in the Global South through an examination of the writings of two physically disabled contemporary women writers from Nepal, BIshnu Kumari Waiwa and Jhamak Ghimire. I show how these renowned contemporary writers challenge stigmas of the disabled body by deconstructiong the "ideology of ability" through their poetry, fiction, and autobiographical narratives. Religious and cultural values disable women's autonomy in general, and create even greater disadvantages for women who are physically disabled. Challenging these cultural stigmas, Waiwa and Ghimire celebrate sexuality and disability as sources of creativity, agency, and identity in narratives that deconstruct …
