The Use Of A Mixed Chlorella Cyanobacteria Culture As A Protein Source For Aquaculture, Marjan Sadat Mohtashamian Jan 2012

The Use Of A Mixed Chlorella Cyanobacteria Culture As A Protein Source For Aquaculture, Marjan Sadat Mohtashamian

LSU Master's Theses

The increase in the global demand for fish feed in the last decades has resulted in the over exploitation of natural resources to produce more fishmeal supplies for aquaculture industry. The supply issues and high prices of fishmeal products have raised the incentives to seek for suitable alternatives to replace fishmeal protein. As a by-product of biofuel production process, residual microalgal biomass may be a low cost feed ingredient to the aquaculture diet. The potential of the use of a post lipid extraction Chlorella vulgaris/Leptolyngbya sp. Co-Culture (Louisiana co-culture) as a protein source in aquaculture feeds could help offset fishmeal. …

Transformative Education In A Broken World: Feminist And Jesuit Pedagogy On The Importance Of Context, Theresa W. Tobin Jan 2012

Transformative Education In A Broken World: Feminist And Jesuit Pedagogy On The Importance Of Context, Theresa W. Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This chapter relates the concept of positionality from feminist theory and pedagogy to the Ignatian paradigm to show how its focus on the individual, at the expense of the structural, fails to acknowledge the unequal power relationships that disadvantage students from minority groups. Focusing on the positionality of gay and lesbian students in the author's classroom at a Jesuit college, it explores how becoming attentive to our own positions with respect to our students allows us better to examine how relationships of domination and subordination between members of oppressed and privileged groups in larger social and ecclesial contexts are re-created …

Reconfigurable Framework For High-Bandwidth Stream-Oriented Data Processing, Alexander Mykyta Jan 2012

Reconfigurable Framework For High-Bandwidth Stream-Oriented Data Processing, Alexander Mykyta

Theses

Designing a digital system that implements an assortment of specialized high performance algorithms can be costly. Considerable non-recurring engineering costs are required to develop an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Additionally, updating or adding features to a design requires the ASIC to be redesigned and refabricated. An alternative to using an ASIC is the field programmable gate array (FPGA). The modern FPGA's ability to be partially reconfigured at runtime allows for the device to have the flexibility normally associated with a processor, while also being able to implement digital logic like in an ASIC. This capability allows for multiple digital …

Interference Of The Court Of The Seat With International Arbitration, The Symposium, Giulia Carbone Jan 2012

Interference Of The Court Of The Seat With International Arbitration, The Symposium, Giulia Carbone

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article looks upon two fundamental questions: (1) whether arbitrators should comply with a local court's order aimed at suspending or interrupting the running of arbitral proceedings, and (2) what type of remedies should a party receive when courts unjustly interfere with their right to arbitrate. This article will explore these two questions in four parts. Part II focuses on the interference with international commercial arbitration by the court at the place of the arbitration. It does so by taking into account ICC cases, some relevant national judgments, and deals with the solutions offered by Articles 8 and 16 of …

“All Textbooks In The Library!” An Experiment With Library Reserves, Tony Greiner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In the fall of 2010, a grant of $36,000 allowed Portland Community College Library to purchase and place on reserve a copy of every required text at one of its campuses. A smaller college “center” also placed all required texts on reserve. The program was very popular with students and parts of the reserve collection received heavy use. Compared to the previous fall term, overall use of reserves at the Cascade Campus library rose 35%, and the Southeast Center collection saw an increase of 110%. However, use of the collection was unevenly distributed, with 26% of the books having more …

Autoregulation Of The Tfc6 Promoter And Effects Of Mis-Expression Of Tfc6 Protein Levels, Kimberly Le Blanc Jan 2012

Autoregulation Of The Tfc6 Promoter And Effects Of Mis-Expression Of Tfc6 Protein Levels, Kimberly Le Blanc

LSU Master's Theses

RNA Polymerase III (Pol III) is best characterized for its transcription of tRNA molecules. Interestingly, Pol III and its associated complexes have been found to be involved in the regulation of transcription of genes transcribed by RNA Polymerase II (Pol II) (Kleinschmidt, LeBlanc et al. 2011). Extra TFIIIC sites (ETC sites) are chromosomally located sites discovered in S. cerevisiae that bind the Pol III transcription factor TFIIIC only through B-box interactions. These chromosomal locations are not normally transcribed (Dieci and Sentenac 1996). One of the subunits of the TFIIIC complex, TFC6 has an ETC site (ETC6) in its promoter region …

Immigration, The Welfare State And Income Inequality In Sixteen Oecd Countries, 1970-2007, Ping Xu Jan 2012

Immigration, The Welfare State And Income Inequality In Sixteen Oecd Countries, 1970-2007, Ping Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many western democracies witnessed roaring levels of immigration and inequality in the past four decades. In spite of speculations that immigration is a contributing factor of the rising income inequality, existing studies do not have a consistent finding relating to this relationship. This dissertation utilizes new data sources to explore the relationship between immigration and inequality. My initial exploration points to the fact that immigration significantly leads to increases in post-redistribution income inequality in 16 OECD countries, but does not have any effect on pre-redistribution income inequality. I contend that it is because immigrants as non-citizens are often times not entitled …

Southern Bellas: The Construction Of Mestiza Identity In Southern Narratives, Wendy Aimee Braun Jan 2012

Southern Bellas: The Construction Of Mestiza Identity In Southern Narratives, Wendy Aimee Braun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project analyzes representations and self-representations of Mestizas living in areas of the Deep South that lack a significant Latino presence. Incorporating a range of media, I take a comparative approach to Southern cultural narratives and propose a re-reading of these works through an examination of identity formation and cultural negotiation. By centering the Southern Mestiza, this dissertation advances concepts of intersectionality to address the role of region, as well as race and gender, in the representation and experiences of women often overlooked in Southern and U.S. Latino studies. The Introductory chapter summarizes the theoretical framework for the study, including …

The Moderating Effects Of Perceived Intentionality: Exploring The Relationships Between Ideas Of Reference, Paranoia, And Social Anxiety In Schizotypy, Sean Cameron Morrison Jan 2012

The Moderating Effects Of Perceived Intentionality: Exploring The Relationships Between Ideas Of Reference, Paranoia, And Social Anxiety In Schizotypy, Sean Cameron Morrison

LSU Master's Theses

Ideas of reference (IOR), paranoia, and social anxiety are three common symptoms of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, which appear to be conceptually related. However, the precise nature of these relationships is unclear. A new measure that assesses perceived intentionality (PI), a social-cognitive bias for perceiving the actions of others during unpleasant social situations as being directed at oneself in an intentionally malicious manner, has provided preliminary evidence for a link between PI and paranoia. The primary aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of PI on the relationships between IOR and paranoia, and between IOR and social anxiety amongst …

Painting A Surrealist Case Study Tableau: Culturally Relevant Post-Disaster Education Programming, Jolanta Smolen Santana

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This retrospective study explores how each disaster site needs to be considered as its own individual portrait for analysis and how inclusion of cultural elements contributes to the recovery of those affected by the disaster and helps in reinstating their cultural identity. This study was conducted after hurricane Katrina’s landfall, at the largest FEMA trailer park, Renaissance Village, from its inception in October 2005 until its closure June 2008. It portrays how programs may ensure their sustainability if cultural elements are included in the program design, development, and delivery of services. The nuanced notions of culture are predominantly recognized in …

Impact Of Plug-In Electrical Cars On Energy Demand, On Power System And On Environment, Sital Tiwari Jan 2012

Impact Of Plug-In Electrical Cars On Energy Demand, On Power System And On Environment, Sital Tiwari

LSU Master's Theses

The use of an electric vehicle (EV) over a gasoline vehicle (GV) is often portrayed as environment friendly or green movement ignoring how the electricity is produced. EVs get credit for preserving green environment and preventing global warming by minimizing the dependency on oil. Most of the time, these assumptions that favor EV are not well justified. Therefore, proper studies on the impact of electric vehicles on energy demand, on environment and on power system are necessary before reaching to any conclusion. This thesis explores the possibility of energy consumption pattern shift within the different sectors of energy use due …

Bacterial Dehalogenation Of Mixtures Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas, Jacob Laddye Dillehay

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of the research presented here was to assess the ability of two bacterial strains, Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens BL-DC-9T and Dehalogenimonas strain IP3-3, to reductively dehalogenate four contaminant mixtures comprised of combinations of the chlorinated solvents 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA). Both of these bacteria were first isolated from contaminated groundwater at the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. Superfund site located near Baton Rouge, LA and are of interest because of their novel abilities to transform halogenated alkanes. In previous work (Yan et al., 2009, Bowman et al., 2012), it was demonstrated that both strain IP3-3 and D. lykanthroporepellens …

The Effect Of Extrinsic Rewards In The High School Classroom, Amanda Vargo Jan 2012

The Effect Of Extrinsic Rewards In The High School Classroom, Amanda Vargo

LSU Master's Theses

One of the biggest obstacles that a high school teacher faces in the classroom is motivating students to complete work. Traditional ideology focuses on intrinsic rewards as way to encourage students to participate and try in the classroom. Things like valuing education, planning for college, and taking pride in a good report card are used in attempts to motivate. Yet, in the adult world, people expect a concrete extrinsic reward (i.e. a paycheck) for the work that they do. This study takes the idea of extrinsic rewards and brings them into the classroom. This study was conducted over two academic …

Analyzing Sustainability Impacts, Kristi Jane Yuthas, Marc J. Epstein

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Financial managers need basic models that incorporate the most significant variables, are robust enough to accommodate a wide variety of decisions, and provide results that are simple to communicate. We attempt to help fill this gap by providing a simple and familiar cost-benefit approach that's enhanced and improved through the addition of sustainability outcomes. We developed the cost-benefit tool presented here specifically with the needs of financial managers in mind. It allows them to simultaneously consider the financial and social outcomes of potential decisions without the need for advanced knowledge of sustainability models or methods. The tool is built on …

A Posthuman Curriculum: Subjectivity At The Crossroads Of Time, Brad M. Petitfils Jan 2012

A Posthuman Curriculum: Subjectivity At The Crossroads Of Time, Brad M. Petitfils

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This investigation is focused on three critical issues facing educators in the 21st century: how technology is reshaping what it means to be human, the shift from the human era to the posthuman era and the implications of that shift on subjectivity, and the purpose of undergraduate education in a posthuman era. The current shift towards a posthuman worldview is a radical break from the modern and postmodern 20th century, when identity was constructed in terms of possibilities and multiplicities. Instead, in the hyperreal 21st century, subjectivity is complicated by homogenization and the radical sameness of simulated technological experiences. Also, …

Applicability Of Periodization To Orchestral Audition Preparation On Trombone: A Case Study, Christopher Evan Green Jan 2012

Applicability Of Periodization To Orchestral Audition Preparation On Trombone: A Case Study, Christopher Evan Green

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The process of auditioning can seem daunting because of the high standards of performance required to win. Brass players have a finite amount of time they can practice each day because of the small muscles of the embouchure. Despite the vast amount of information available on preparing for a brass orchestral audition, little has been written on how to organize a practice schedule leading up to the audition. An analysis of literature in the major brass journals confirm which strategies have been considered to be most important when preparing for an audition, but an important component from the world for …

Single-Molecule Detection Of Molecular Beacons Generated From Ldr On Thermoplastic Microfluidic Device For Bioanalysis, Zhiyong Peng Jan 2012

Single-Molecule Detection Of Molecular Beacons Generated From Ldr On Thermoplastic Microfluidic Device For Bioanalysis, Zhiyong Peng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Current clinical techniques for nucleic acid detection and analysis often involve PCR, lacking adequate specificity or sensitivity to meet the stringent requirements in certain applications. This research aims to develop an innovative molecular assay and the associated hardware to rapidly signal the presence of certain targets using reporter sequence found in their genome without requiring PCR. This assay coupled the sensitivity of single-pair fluorescence resonance energy transfer (spFRET) with the specificity of ligase detection reaction (LDR) to provide near real-time readout of target biomarkers. Heightened concerns on potential bioterrorism threats, such as rapid dissemination of pathogenic bacteria or viruses into …

Organic salts consist of bulky anions and/or cations whose properties can be tailored for specific purposes. Ionic liquids (ILs) are (semi)organic salts with melting points below 100 ºC. They typically exhibit neglible vapor pressures, high thermal stability, wide liquidus range, and tunable solubility. Moreover specific functions can be built into their respective ions. The first part of the dissertation involves discussions of chiral ionic liquids with additional protic, magnetic, and magneto-luminescent properties, respectively. In addition to their enantioselective sensing capabilities, the ILs may find use in chiral separations and catalysis. The second part of the dissertation involves discussions of fluorescent …

A 2-D, Variable-Density Numerical Model Of Subsurface Fluid Flow Through The Edwards Aquifer, New Braunfels, Tx: Mechanisms Inhibiting Flow Across The Freshwater/Saline-Water Interface, Scott Ryan Tipple Jan 2012

A 2-D, Variable-Density Numerical Model Of Subsurface Fluid Flow Through The Edwards Aquifer, New Braunfels, Tx: Mechanisms Inhibiting Flow Across The Freshwater/Saline-Water Interface, Scott Ryan Tipple

LSU Master's Theses

The Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas, U.S., composed of faulted carbonate bedrock, contains freshwater and saline water. In aquifers that are used as a source of drinking water and that contain fresh and saline waters, saline-water intrusion can result in degradation of water quality. Yet, in the Edwards aquifer, limited saline-water intrusion has occurred. The questions addressed are “Why is the saline-water intrusion less than expected,” and “Is there a trigger that will result in saline-water intrusion into the freshwater reservoir?” Three hypotheses were tested. One: an extremely saline water density might prevent mixing across the interface. Two: faults could …
