Hiv Rna Suppression And Immune Restoration: Can We Do Better?, Marilia Rita Pinzone, Michelino Di Rosa, Bruno Cacopardo, Giuseppe Nunnari
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
HAART has significantly changed the natural history of HIV infection: patients receiving antiretrovirals are usually able to control viremia, even though not all virological responders adequately recover their CD4+ count. The reasons for poor immune restoration are only partially known and they include genetic, demographic and immunologic factors. A crucial element affecting immune recovery is immune activation, related to residual viremia; indeed, a suboptimal virological control (i.e., low levels of plasma HIV RNA) has been related with higher levels of chronic inflammation and all-cause mortality. The sources of residual viremia are not yet completely known, even though the most important …

Jc Penney Strategic Marketing Plan 2012: Product Strategy, Alisha Liane Ostlund
Apparel Design and Hospitality Management
The JCPenney Company has undergone a transition from a value retailer to a streamlined,customer-driven retailer in order to set itself apart from its biggest competitors, Macy’s and Kohl’s. Previously, JCP was focused on general, storewide promotions. Currently, JCP has retooled their image to reflect a standard set of prices and special savings. In this exploratory look at JCP’s merchandising strategy, both previous and new methods are examined and additional steps to improve the returns on merchandising investments are offered. During this study, a detailed examination of JCP’s internal and external environments has been conducted, and an analysis of their consumer trends …
Communication Accommodation In Context: An Analysis Of Convergence And Divergence In Action, Nathan Thomas Sand
Communication Accommodation In Context: An Analysis Of Convergence And Divergence In Action, Nathan Thomas Sand
Communication
This collection of essays examines nature and relationship of discourse and social distance by focusing largely on the concepts of divergence and convergence throughout the communication process. The first essay examines the risk communication strategies used by officials to effectively and accommodatively confront and manage the outdoor New York City smoking ban. The second essay performs a rhetorical criticism of former-President Bush’s September 11th Speech, outlining specific instances in discourse that both decrease and increase social distance with the audience. And the third essay steps into the ESL classroom to propose ways in which we can better recognize and understand …
Hell Hath No Fury Like A Scorned Soap Fan: A Case Study Of Soap Opera Fan Activism, Sarah Jane Adams
Hell Hath No Fury Like A Scorned Soap Fan: A Case Study Of Soap Opera Fan Activism, Sarah Jane Adams
Communication
Soaps operas, or daytime serials, have long been a staple of American culture. In April 2011, ABC-Disney announced the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live. Cancellations propelled the fans of these programs to launch efforts to save not only the shows, but the genre. Through the use of social media, websites, and traditional off-line activities that included calling and letter-writing, fans strived to make their voices heard. The study examines the creation of an online community and discourse through a textual-analysis case study of blogs on two fan activist websites. Dahlberg’s criteria for presence in an …
All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman
All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman
Articles & Chapters
Online and face-to-face harassment in schools requires a coordinated response from the school, parents, students, and government. In this Article, I address a particular subset of online and face-to-face harassment, or identity-based harassment. Identity-based aggressors highlight a quality intrinsic to someone’s personhood and demean it, deprive it of value, and use it as a weapon. They attack women, racial minorities, religious minorities, and other traditionally victimized groups. And, as such, they attack not only their particular victims but also their victims’ communities. Identity-based aggressors com- mit a constitutional evil not only because their behavior interferes with victims’ access to education, …

Tormented: Antigay Bullying In Schools, Ari Ezra Waldman
Tormented: Antigay Bullying In Schools, Ari Ezra Waldman
Articles & Chapters
This Article begins a theoretical and empirical discussion on bullying and cyberharassment of all students, but particularly gay and lesbian youth. Despite the recent spate of bullying-related suicides, I argue that antibullying proposals that include harsh criminal punishments for egregious cases of bullying and cyberbullying in schools lack validity as a matter of legal theory and practice. In fact, it is what makes criminalization so initially attractive — that is, the public’s emotional and retributive need for punishments equal to bullying tragedies — that ultimately leaves the proposal devoid of reason. Criminalization proposals only satisfy retributive aims and are unlikely …

Although social network sites (SNS) are in use by millions worldwide, the deployment of such sites as tools for teaching and learning is new. Topics related to the ways, means, and outcomes of SNS use in education and training contexts constitute a fresh research area within the field of educational technology. This mixed-methods research project gathered information regarding the use of SNS in education and training settings. Respondents to an Internet survey showed familiarity with a range of social media software, and several had used social network sites including Facebook, Ning, and MySpace in their professional practices. Respondents identified these …
Amphiphilic Invertible Polymers: Self-Assembly Into Functional Materials Driven By Environment Polarity, Ivan Hevus
Amphiphilic Invertible Polymers: Self-Assembly Into Functional Materials Driven By Environment Polarity, Ivan Hevus
Coatings and Polymeric Materials
Stimuli-responsive polymers adapt to environmental changes by adjusting their chain conformation in a fast and reversible way. Responsive polymeric materials have already found use in electronics, coatings industry, personal care, and bio-related areas. The current work aims at the development of novel responsive functional polymeric materials by manipulating environment-dependent self-assembly of a new class of responsive macromolecules strategically designed in this study, – amphiphilic invertible polymers (AIPs). Environment-dependent micellization and self-assembly of three different synthesized AIP types based on poly(ethylene glycol) as a hydrophilic fragment and varying hydrophobic constituents was demonstrated in polar and nonpolar solvents, as well as on …

See how few of the cases of the suspension of the habeas corpus law, have been worthy of that suspension. They have been either real treason, wherein the parties might as well have been charged at once, or sham plots, where it was shameful they should ever have been suspected. Yet for the few cases wherein the suspension of the habeas corpus has done real good, that operation is now become habitual and the minds of the nation almost prepared to live under its constant suspension.

Where's The Revolution?: From "Code Year" To The Continuum Of Proceduracy, Christopher Aaron Lindgren
Where's The Revolution?: From "Code Year" To The Continuum Of Proceduracy, Christopher Aaron Lindgren
English
As the calendar turned over to 2012, an online learning initiative, Codecademy, declared it “Code Year”—the year “for everyone” to learn code. Within six months, this call has received much attention from the public and scholars in the university. Yet, this history and theory paper more deeply investigates this call for a new mass literacy, which was actually proposed back in the 1960s as procedural literacy, i.e., proceduracy. Accordingly, a history is told about how Computer Science ignored Alan Perlis’ call for procedural literacy and Rhetoric and Composition has just recently begun to address Marshall McLuhan’s media turn. From there, …

Improved Ex Vivo Method For Microbiocidal Activity Across Vertebrate Species, Susannah S. French, Lorin A. Neuman-Lee
Biology Faculty Publications
The field of ecoimmunology is currently undergoing rapid expansion, whereby biologists from a wide range of ecological disciplines are increasingly interested in assessing immunocompetence in their study organisms. One of the key challenges to researchers is determining what eco-immune measures to use in a given experiment. Moreover, there are limitations depending on study species, requirements for specific antibodies, and relevance of the methodology to the study organism. Here we introduce an improved ex vivo method for microbiocidal activity across vertebrate species. The utility of this assay is that it determines the ability of an organism to remove a pathogen that …

The Awareness Of Computer-Mediated Communication's Social Presence For Virtual High School Students, Heather Bigley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the perception of social presence that students in a virtual high school have of using computer-mediated communication (CMC): email, discussion board, tutoring sessions, and asynchronous classroom activities. The research analyzed data for social presence based on gender, years of experience in a cyber school, and self-proficiency ratings on each form of CMC. The purpose of this study was to identify if high school students in a virtual community perceive email, discussion board, tutoring sessions and asynchronous classroom activities as enhancing their social presence within the virtual community. The findings of the study are:
1. Students perceived that …
The Effects Of A Violence Prevention Intervention On Prosocial Behavior And Perception Of School Safety, Cheon Carlon Graham
The Effects Of A Violence Prevention Intervention On Prosocial Behavior And Perception Of School Safety, Cheon Carlon Graham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In order for schools to be successful in providing students with developmentally appropriate instruction and social experiences, an atmosphere of safety and protection is required. The recent spike in school shootings over the past 15 years has created a sense of urgency to examine the dynamics of school violence in order to generate and implement effective security measures (Brooks, Schiraldi, & Ziedenberg, 2000). Unlike traditional problem-focused approaches, the positive approach to school violence is preventive, solution-driven, and systemic. The positive approach to violence prevention at school focuses on building a set of social and emotional strengths that are incompatible with …
