Can We Reduce Eating Disorder Risk Factors In Female College Athletes? A Randomized Exploratory Investigation Of Two Peer-Led Interventions, Carolyn Becker, Leda Mcdaniel, Stephanie Bull, Marc Powell, Kevin Mcintyre

Psychology Faculty Research

Female athletes are at least as at risk as other women for eating disorders (EDs) and at risk for the female athlete triad (i.e., inadequate energy availability, menstrual disorders, and osteoporosis). This study investigated whether two evidence-based programs appear promising for future study if modified to address the unique needs of female athletes. Athletes were randomly assigned to athlete-modified dissonance prevention or healthy weight intervention (AM-HWI). ED risk factors were assessed pre/post-treatment, and 6-week and 1-year follow-up. Results (analyzed sample, N = 157) indicated that both interventions reduced thin-ideal internalization, dietary restraint, bulimic pathology, shape and weight concern, and negative …

Effects Of Childhood Family Dynamics On Body Dissatisfaction In Adulthood, Adrienne F. Kerbs Jan 2012

Effects Of Childhood Family Dynamics On Body Dissatisfaction In Adulthood, Adrienne F. Kerbs

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Past research has identified many singular components of family dynamics that affect body dissatisfaction in adulthood, but have not studied the effects of many different family factors simultaneously. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of multiple early family dynamics on body dissatisfaction in adulthood using a sample of female college students. It was expected that the nature of parental bonding, parental comments, and lack of parental acceptance during childhood would have negative effects on body image in adulthood. A sample of female college students completed self-report questionnaires about their parents from the perspective of when …

Patent Attorney Malpractice: Case-Within-A-Case-Within-A-Case, Samuel Oddi Jan 2012

Patent Attorney Malpractice: Case-Within-A-Case-Within-A-Case, Samuel Oddi

Akron Law Faculty Publications

As literary devices, a “story-within-a story” and a “play-within-a-play” have a long lineage. Shakespeare seems to have been particularly fond of these devices. The legal analog may be seen as the “case-within-a-case” (“trial-within-a-trial,” “suit-within-a-suit”) arising in legal malpractice cases. The case-within-a-case terminology seems to be the most commonly used and hence will be used herein. While it is clear that the “case” is the malpractice case, it is not so clear what the “case-within-” is, which is usually referred to as the “underlying case.” Often, it seems to be presumed that the underlying case is limited to litigation, which would …

The Civil Rights Movement And The Constitution, Wilson Huhn

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This presentation of March 3, 2012, describes the influence that the Civil Rights Movement has had on the interpretation of the Constitution. The Civil Rights Movement not only broadened our understanding of the principle of equality under Equal Protection, it also expanded opportunities for Freedom of Expression and the Right to Privacy. In addition, the Civil Rights Movement stimulated the courts to recognize the power of Congress to enact legislation under the Commerce Clause and Section 5 of the 14th Amendment. Finally, as a result of the Civil Rights Movement, the Supreme Court has moved to a more realistic, consequentialist …

The Growing Acceptance And Legal Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage In America Constitutes A Victory For Reality-Based Thinking, Wilson Huhn Jan 2012

The Growing Acceptance And Legal Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage In America Constitutes A Victory For Reality-Based Thinking, Wilson Huhn

Akron Law Faculty Publications

During the 20th century “pragmatism” emerged as the leading American philosophy and policy analysis – also called “legal realism” – became the dominant method of interpreting American law. The lightning speed with which same-sex marriage is gaining acceptance in the United States is due to the fact that Americans embrace realistic rather than ideological forms of thinking, and the growing recognition of same-sex marriage in the law is due to the fact that we interpret our Constitution in accordance with realistic analysis.

Misappropriating Women's History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion, Tracy A. Thomas Jan 2012

Misappropriating Women's History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

“Without known exception, the early American feminists condemned abortion in the strongest possible terms.” This claim about women’s history has been used by pro-life advocates for twenty years to control the political narrative of abortion. Conservatives, led by the group Feminists for Life, have used feminist icons from history to support their anti-abortion advocacy. Federal anti-abortion legislation has been named after feminist heroines, like the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pregnancy and Parenting Students Act (co-sponsored by Rick Santorum) and the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Act of 2011. Amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court quote women’s rights leaders in …

Odyssey Of The Mind: Social Networking In Cyberschool, Michael Barbour, Cory Plough

Education Faculty Publications

K-12 online learning and cyber charter schools have grown at a tremendous rate over the past decade. At the same time, these online programs have struggled to provide the social spaces where students can interact that K-12 schools are traditionally able to provide. Social networking presents a unique opportunity to provide these kinds of social interactions in an online environment. In this article, we trace the development and use of social networking at one cyber charter school to extend the space for online instruction and provide opportunities for social interaction that online schools are often unable to provide.

Passive Gas-Liquid Separation Using Hydrophobic Porous Polymer Membranes: A Study On The Effect Of Operating Pressure On Membrane Area Requirement, Taylor Patrick Maxwell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of hydrophobic porous polymer membranes to vent unwanted gas bubbles from liquid streams is becoming increasingly more common in portable applications such as direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and micro-fluidic cooling of electronic circuits. In order for these portable systems to keep up with the ever increasing demand of the mobile user, it is essential that auxiliary components, like gas-liquid separators (GLS), continue to decrease in weight and size. While there has been significant progress made in the field of membrane-based gas-liquid separation, the ability to miniaturize such devices has not been thoroughly addressed in the available literature. …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The research presented in this thesis grapples with questions concerning the gendered and spatial aspects of food culture and “kitchenspace” in Fez, Morocco. The everyday geographies of urban women in Fez, Morocco are closely connected to local food systems and food spaces. Food spaces like the kitchen are where women’s complex relationships to food and gender identity are revealed. Kitchens are spaces where women negotiate gender identity and where specialized knowledge (concerning food and gender) is applied, shared, and transferred from one generation to the next. Critical knowledge concerning gender and identity is communicated through food and food systems. This …

A Cultural And Social History On The Role Of Film And Societal Trends: A Case Study Of The Outlaw Jesse James, April Mae Grube Jan 2012

A Cultural And Social History On The Role Of Film And Societal Trends: A Case Study Of The Outlaw Jesse James, April Mae Grube

Honors Theses

The use of film as a source of history has been highly contested since the creation of narrative film in the beginning of the twentieth century. While there is no doubt that film cannt be used as a source for the accurate account of an event or an individual, historians are slowly accepting the role that films play as "cultural documents." The benefit of film in the study of popular memory and social and cultural history is best seen in the study of the development of an individual, event, or ideal over time. Because of this, Jesse James is an …

No. 334: A Visual Exploration Of Race And Identity, Naudline Pierre Jan 2012

No. 334: A Visual Exploration Of Race And Identity, Naudline Pierre

Honors Theses

Throughout history, humans have invented several methods of classification - most of which are unsettling. The human need to classify is one that is deeply rooted in the search for identity. The need to fit, the need to explain, and the need to rationalize the world around us is a powerful incubator in which the process of human classification takes place. Although this thesis project involves a substantial amount of research, it is essentially a documentation of my journey to finding my identity through the lens of human classification based on physical attributes. Through the research of various human classification …

Measuring And Quantifying Web Application Design, Craig A. Mcninch Jan 2012

Measuring And Quantifying Web Application Design, Craig A. Mcninch

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The World Wide Web makes it easier for organizations and people to share information across great distances at a minimal cost. In addition, governments and businesses are beginning to offer services on the World Wide Web to their respective populations and customers. Unlike traditional desktop based applications where the programming language used are most likely Object Oriented (OO) based languages such as C++ or Java, most web applications are built upon more lightweight scripting languages. These languages typically don’t support all the OO features that more traditional languages support. In addition, some web applications are dependent on external web services …

Standing By: Police Paralysis, Race, And The 1964 Philadelphia Riot, Nicole Maurantonio Jan 2012

Standing By: Police Paralysis, Race, And The 1964 Philadelphia Riot, Nicole Maurantonio

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Although considerable scholarship has explored the riots of the 1960s as the culmination of tensions simmering throughout the tumultuous decade, this article examines Philadelphia’s 1964 riot and the ways that local newspapers attempted to frame the violence. By urging Philadelphians to view the riot as the outcome of an ineffectual police department, which was ill-equipped to confront black “hoodlums,” journalists privileged frames of police paralysis and marginalization. The circulation of these two frames alone, however, cannot explain the eventual demise of the city’s Police Advisory Board. This study argues that the imagery of police standing idly by while the streets …

Online Communities Driving Guideline Adoption In National Health Care Initiatives: An Examination Of The Door-To-Balloon Alliance Online Community, Alexander Nazem Jan 2012

Online Communities Driving Guideline Adoption In National Health Care Initiatives: An Examination Of The Door-To-Balloon Alliance Online Community, Alexander Nazem

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Research suggests that health care organizations struggle to implement evidence-based guidelines. In the wake of this observation, national quality improvement initiatives have increasingly sponsored online communities (OCs) in which organizations and professionals can seek guidance from their peers on the many challenges that accompany the shifts in practice caused by guideline adoption.

In this paper, I examine the effect of participation in an OC on hospitals' implementation of evidence-based guidelines. I hypothesize that hospitals whose staff utilize OCs are more successful at achieving guideline implementation, leading ultimately to greater clinical outcome improvement. This hypothesis was tested using data from the …

Actigraphy Sleep Patterns: Relationships To Body Mass Index And Physical Activity In Minority Children, Kathryn Wynne Jan 2012

Actigraphy Sleep Patterns: Relationships To Body Mass Index And Physical Activity In Minority Children, Kathryn Wynne

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Previous research suggests that short sleep duration and later bedtimes are associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and lower physical activity levels in children. We sought to determine if objective measurements of sleep duration and timing were correlated with BMI percentile and/or physical activity measures in low-income, minority children. Data were collected from 104 8- to 10-year-old children (58% female; 88.5% Latino or African-American; 51.9% overweight or obese) who were instructed to wear an accelerometer at their waists for 1 week. Data were manually analyzed to determine average sleep-onset (i.e. bedtime), sleep-offset (i.e. wake time), sleep duration, and minutes …

Liar, Liar, Jury's The Trier? The Future Of Neuroscience-Based Credibility Assessment And The Court, John B. Meixner Jr.

Scholarly Works

Neuroscience-based credibility-assessment tests have recently become increasingly mainstream, purportedly able to determine whether an individual is lying to a certain set of questions (the Control Question Test) or whether an individual recognizes information that only a liable person would recognize (the Concealed Information Test). Courts have hesitated to admit these tests as evidence for two primary reasons. First, following the general standard that credibility assessment is a matter solely for the trier of fact, courts exclude the evidence because it impinges on the province of the jury. Second, because these methods have not been rigorously tested in realistic scenarios, courts …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Decorin, a small leucine-rich proteoglycan harboring a dermatan sulfate chain at its N-terminus, is involved in regulating matrix organization and cell signaling. Loss of the dermatan sulfate of decorin leads to an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome characterized by delayed wound healing. Decorin-null (Dcn(-/-)) mice display a phenotype similar to that of EDS patients. The fibrillar collagen phenotype of Dcn(-/-) mice could be rescued in vitro by decorin but not with decorin lacking the glycosaminoglycan chain. We utilized a 3D cell culture model to investigate the impact of the altered extracellular matrix on Dcn(-/-) fibroblasts. Using 2D gel electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometry, …
