Economic Reforms In Pakistan: One Step Forward, Two Steps Backward, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
In 1998 I was invited by Dr. Sarfraz Qureshi, the then Director of PIDE to deliver a lecture on “The Political Economy of Reforms: A Case Study of Pakistan” . This lecture was subsequently published by PIDE as a monograph. A year later, in December 1999 I had the honour of becoming the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and actually participated actively in the formulation and implementation of economic reforms. During the six year period of public policy making I realized that my knowledge about the political economy as manifested in my PIDE lecture was incomplete. The narrative …

The Duty To Advise The Lorax: Environmental Advocacy And The Risk Of Reform, Keith W. Rizzardi
The Duty To Advise The Lorax: Environmental Advocacy And The Risk Of Reform, Keith W. Rizzardi
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Lawyers have an ethical duty to advise their clients on moral, economic, social, and political matters. When applied to the changing field of environmental law, this abstract notion becomes provocative. Lawyers should advise their environmental advocacy clients of the possibility that their efforts to apply statutes or rules might initially succeed, but subsequent legislative reactions might defund, reform, or repeal the laws the client’s case relied upon. As a client’s sophistication decreases, or as the risk of adverse reactions to the client’s environmental advocacy increases, the lawyer’s duty to advise the client of these risks can shift from discretionary to …

Materializing Monsters: Aurora Models, Garage Kits And The Object Practices Of Horror Fandom, Bob Rehak
Film & Media Studies Faculty Works
Since the explosion of ‘monster culture’ among adolescents in the 1960s, model kits, statues and toys based on horror-movie icons have played a key role in fan activities surrounding fantastic film and television. From magazines such as Famous Monsters to garage kits and collectible companies, these ‘object practices’ provide an alternative means of mapping the history, present and future of fantastic-media franchises, moving beyond reductive conceptions of marketing and promotion to suggest that material incarnations of science fiction, horror and fantasy texts are essential to their cultural persistence and commercial viability.

Nucleosomes are important for gene regulation because their arrangement on the genome can control which proteins bind to DNA. Currently, few human nucleosomes are thought to be consistently positioned across cells; however, this has been difficult to assess due to the limited resolution of existing data. We performed paired-end sequencing of micrococcal nuclease-digested chromatin (MNase-seq) from seven lymphoblastoid cell lines and mapped over 3.6 billion MNase-seq fragments to the human genome to create the highest-resolution map of nucleosome occupancy to date in a human cell type. In contrast to previous results, we find that most nucleosomes have more consistent positioning …

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a globally significant disease, with 1.3 billion persons in 83 countries at risk. A coordinated effort of administering annual macrofilaricidal prophylactics to the entire at-risk population has succeeded in impacting and eliminating LF transmission in multiple regions. However, some areas in the South Pacific are predicted to persist as transmission sites, due in part to the biology of the mosquito vector, which has led to a call for additional tools to augment drug treatments. Autocidal strategies against mosquitoes are resurging in the effort against invasive mosquitoes and vector borne disease, with examples that include field …

This is a documentation of the journey of an artist tracing her steps to produce art that speaks to the cause of the environment. Scientific research continues to spotlight the impact humans have on the demise of the environment. Contemporary art is a visual stimulus that is often used to draw attention to specific issues including those involving science and the environment. The juxtaposition of scientific data with images from nature functions to highlight the fragility, beauty and destructiveness of this interaction. The goal of this thesis exhibition was to create visually seductive work that: contained information about the environment, …

A Comparison Of Two Concurrent Think-Aloud Protocols: Categories And Relevancy Of Utterances, Katie Greiner
A Comparison Of Two Concurrent Think-Aloud Protocols: Categories And Relevancy Of Utterances, Katie Greiner
Theses
This paper discusses the results of an exploratory study that compared type and quality of participant verbalizations experienced from two concurrent think-aloud methods. The speech communication and traditional think-aloud methods were compared in terms of the number of participant utterances spoken and relevancy of those utterances in terms of further usability analysis. Though the speech communication method produced fewer utterances, it produced more relevant utterances than the traditional method. Participants preferred hearing the moderator's acknowledgment tokens in the speech communication condition to the moderator's silence in the traditional think-aloud method. There was a significant difference with how natural participants felt …

Art has taught me to treasure family history. Since childhood, I have loved looking through my grandparents’ memorabilia, especially old family photos and my grandmother’s jewelry box. I have always admired my grandparents and recognized their unique gifts and artistic talents. I keep their memories, stories, and sayings alive through my artwork. My symbolic work consists of illuminated sculptural pieces as well as intimate jewelry designs. I work in precious metal clay (PMC), glass, sterling silver, crystals, precious stones, and photographs to create personal and unique reminders of people and places. Through my work, I want to inspire others to …
