Do Adverts Increase The Probability Of Finding Online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy For Depression? Cross-Sectional Study., Ray B. Jones, Lesley Goldsmith, Paul Hewson, Boulos Mn Kamel, Christopher J. Williams

School of Nursing and Midwifery

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of online adverts on the probability of finding online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for depression. DESIGN: Exploratory online cross-sectional study of search experience of people in the UK with depression in 2011. (1) The authors identified the search terms over 6 months entered by users who subsequently clicked on the advert for online help for depression. (2) A panel of volunteers across the UK recorded websites presented by normal Google search for the term 'depression'. (iii) The authors examined these websites to estimate probabilities of knowledgeable and naive internet users finding online CBT and the …

Fabrication And Mechanical Properties Of Chitosan Composite Membrane Containing Hydroxyapatite Particles, Hr Le, S Qu, Re Mackay, R Rothwell Jan 2012

Fabrication And Mechanical Properties Of Chitosan Composite Membrane Containing Hydroxyapatite Particles, Hr Le, S Qu, Re Mackay, R Rothwell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

This paper described the development of chitosan composites containing precipitated hydroxyapatite particles for potential applications in orthopaedic surgery or waste water treatment. The synthetic process and morphology of hydroxyapatite were reported. The effects of hydroxyapatite content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. It was found that the Young’s Modulus of the composites decreases with hydroxyapatite content while the failure strength and strain increase with the hydroxyapatite content.

Background: Aerogels are a versatile group of nanostructured/nanoporous materials with physical and chemical properties that can be adjusted to suit the application of interest. In terms of biomedical applications, aerogels are particularly suitable for implants such as membranes, tissue growth scaffolds, and nerve regeneration and guidance inserts. The mesoporous nature of aerogels can also be used for diffusion based release of drugs that are loaded during the drying stage of the material. From the variety of aerogels polyurea crosslinked silica aerogels have the most potential for future biomedical applications and are explored here. Methodology: This study assessed the short and …

Methamphetamine (METH), a highly addictive drug used worldwide, induces oxidative stress in various animal organs. Recent animal studies indicate that methamphetamine also induces oxidative stress in the retina, which is an em- bryonic extension of the forebrain. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the pro- tecttive effects of N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) against oxidative stress induced by METH in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. Our stud- ies showed that NACA protected against METH- induced oxidative stress in retinal pigment epithelial cells. Although METH significantly de- creased glutathione (GSH) levels and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondial- dehyde …
