Edible Marijuana: A New Frontier In The Culinary World, Ariella H. Wolkowicz Oct 2012

Edible Marijuana: A New Frontier In The Culinary World, Ariella H. Wolkowicz

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, has a rich history as a source of fiber, food and medicine (Li 437). Since 1785, physicians and scientists alike have worked to discover the active chemical components and medical effectiveness of this plant (Touw 2; Aldrich). Despite its complicated legal history, marijuana has retained a place culturally and, in some countries, scientifically as an effective medical agent. As a medically edible ingredient, cannabis has also been more recently heralded as a new, even cutting edge flavor, opening a new frontier to the culinary community.

After the isolation of the main active ingredient in cannabis, …

Finite Element Model Updating For Rotary Machinery, Nathalie Gotin Oct 2012

Finite Element Model Updating For Rotary Machinery, Nathalie Gotin

Master's Theses

The main approach of this thesis was to develop a mathematical model that represents a rotary machine. Experimental data was used to define a finite element model (FEM). In order to obtain the experimental data, the rotary machine had to be balanced. An impact hammer test made it possible to obtain frequency response functions (FRF). The frequency response functions were curvefitted in order to obtain the mode shapes and natural frequencies.

Mathematical models have been created with ABAQUS and Matlab. For the Matlab Model the assumption has been made that the rotor machine consists of a specific number of beam …

Patents 101: Patentable Subject Matter And Separation Of Powers, Max Stul Oppenheimer Oct 2012

Patents 101: Patentable Subject Matter And Separation Of Powers, Max Stul Oppenheimer

All Faculty Scholarship

The definition of statutory subject matter lies at the heart of the

patent system. It is the reflection of Congress's policy decision as to

what types of inventions one may patent. While the congressional

definition of statutory subject matter (in what is now 35 U.S.C. § 101)

has remained fundamentally constant since 1790, the Supreme Court

has reinterpreted and redefined statutory subject matter several times,

leaving lower courts with the frustrating task of trying to develop a

coherent jurisprudence against a changing landscape. This

inconstancy has introduced uncertainty for inventors who are trying to

make the fundamental decision of whether …

Syntheses And Electronic Properties Of Rhodium(Iii) Complexes Bearing A Redox-Active Ligand, Sarath Wanniarachchi, Brendan J Liddle, Brandon Kizer, Jeewantha S. Hewage, Sergey V. Lindeman, James R. Gardinier Oct 2012

Syntheses And Electronic Properties Of Rhodium(Iii) Complexes Bearing A Redox-Active Ligand, Sarath Wanniarachchi, Brendan J Liddle, Brandon Kizer, Jeewantha S. Hewage, Sergey V. Lindeman, James R. Gardinier

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A series of rhodium(III) complexes of the redox-active ligand, H(L = bis(4-methyl-2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl)amido), was prepared, and the electronic properties were studied. Thus, heating an ethanol solution of commercial RhCl3·3H2O with H(L) results in the precipitation of insoluble [H(L)]RhCl3, 1. The reaction of a methanol suspension of [H(L)]RhCl3 with NEt4OH causes ligand deprotonation and affords nearly quantitative yields of the soluble, deep-green, title compound (NEt4)[(L)RhCl3]·H2O, 2·H2O. Complex 2·H2O reacts readily with excess pyridine, triethylphosphine, or pyrazine (pyz) to eliminate NEt4Cl and give charge-neutral complexes trans-(L)RhCl2(py), trans-3, trans-(L)RhCl2(PEt3), trans- 4, or trans-(L)RhCl2(pyz), trans-5, where the incoming Lewis base is trans- to the amido …

Experimental Documentation Of The Structural Consequences Of Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions To The Proximal Cysteine Of A Cytochrome P450, Piotr J. Mak, Yuting Yang, Sangchoul Im, Lucy A. Waskell, James R. Kincaid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Resonance Raman spectroscopy is used to document, for the first time, a 6 cm−1 decrease of the Fe-S stretch by introducing an H-bond donor into the proximal pocket of a cytochrome P450, which interacts with the key cysteine thiolate axial ligand. The anticipated trans-effect on bound exogenous ligands is also confirmed and evidence is obtained supporting intimate interaction of the new histidyl-imidazole fragment with the heme periphery.

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study was conducted to investigate the motivations of 974 Turkish pre-service teachers for choosing teaching as a career and to examine their perceptions about the teaching profession. Correlations, t test, ANCOVAs and MANCOVAs were used to explore the relationships among participants’ motivations and perceptions, and to make comparisons according to different characteristics such as gender, different specialism, number of times participants had entered the university entrance examination, and rank of their preference of teaching as a profession. The results showed that the social and personal utility value and prior teaching and learning experiences were the highly rated motivation factors. …

The Tower Builders: A Consideration Of Stem, Stse And Ethics In Science Education, Astrid Steele, Christine R. Brew, Brenda R. Beatty Oct 2012

The Tower Builders: A Consideration Of Stem, Stse And Ethics In Science Education, Astrid Steele, Christine R. Brew, Brenda R. Beatty

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The call for the integration of ethical considerations in the teaching of science is now firmly on the agenda. Taking as illustrative a science lesson in a pre-service teacher class, the authors consider the roles of STSE (science, technology, society and environment) and the increasingly influential heavily funded STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education initiatives. The origins and foci of both initiatives are discussed, as are their disparate ontological foundations. The use of Habermas’ knowledge theories in conjunction with ethical frameworks is posited as a way of considering both STSE and STEM perspectives and their implications for strengthening science …

Quantitative Determination Of Acetylsalicyclic Acid And Acetaminophen By Q-Nmr (Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Technique, Gouthami Kanduri

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The pharmaceutical industry mainly uses chromatographic techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC), to determine the quantity of the active ingredient and other material in the drugs. A large effort goes into developing methods using chromatography techniques. The method development and running HPLC and GC are time consuming. Methods need to be updated as the chromatographic columns and the instruments wear out. On the other hand, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique is mainly used for qualitative analysis to determine the identity of compounds. However, Proton-NMR technique does provide quantitative information of compounds but to develop …

West Nile Virus Seroreversion And The Influence Of Herd Immunity On Disease Risk In A Long-Term Study Of Free-Ranging Birds, Eileen M. Mckee Oct 2012

West Nile Virus Seroreversion And The Influence Of Herd Immunity On Disease Risk In A Long-Term Study Of Free-Ranging Birds, Eileen M. Mckee

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The transmission and amplification of West Nile virus (WNV) is driven by the number of susceptible avian hosts. The quantity of susceptible hosts is determined by 1) recruitment of juvenile birds during the breeding season, 2) adult birds previously unexposed to WNV, and 3) adult birds with waning antibody titers. Although rarely tested, avian herd immunity and seroreversion could have a direct impact on Culex infection rate, a proxy for the reproductive number of WNV. In this study, we utilized data from a seven year study investigating WNV transmission ecology in suburban Chicago, Illinois. We tested the hypothesis that herd …

Is Sea Level Rise Accelerating In The Chesapeake Bay? A Demonstation Of A Novel New Approach For Analyzing Sea Level Data, Tal Ezer, William Bryce Corlett

CCPO Publications

Sea level data from the Chesapeake Bay are used to test a novel new analysis method for studies of sea level rise (SLR). The method, based on Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hilbert-Huang Transformation, separates the sea level trend from other oscillating modes and reveals how the mean sea level changes over time. Bootstrap calculations test the robustness of the method and provide confidence levels. The analysis shows that rates of SLR have increased from similar to 1-3 mm y(-1) in the 1930s to similar to 4-10 mm y(-1) in 2011, an acceleration of similar to 0.05-0.10 mm y(-2) that is …

Partisan Politics, Agricultural Interests And Effects On State-Level Ethanol Subsidies, Lance L. Odum Oct 2012

Partisan Politics, Agricultural Interests And Effects On State-Level Ethanol Subsidies, Lance L. Odum

Research Papers

This paper examines factors leading to state-level fuel ethanol subsidies. The federal Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2) mandates a certain volume of ethanol production through 2022. However, the $6 Billion federal ethanol subsidy expired at the end of 2011. Because the mandated amount of ethanol production from corn continues to increase until 2015, there is evidence that ethanol producers may look to the individual states to ensure that higher levels of ethanol production remain profitable. This paper examines factors that have led to state-level policies favoring ethanol in order to predict which states will be more likely to increase subsidies in …

A Financial Economic Theory Of Punitive Damages, Robert J. Rhee Oct 2012

A Financial Economic Theory Of Punitive Damages, Robert J. Rhee

Michigan Law Review

This Article provides a financial economic theory of punitive damages. The core problem, as the Supreme Court acknowledged in Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker, is not the systemic amount of punitive damages in the tort system; rather it is the risk of outlier outcomes. Low frequency, high severity awards are unpredictable, cause financial distress, and beget social cost. By focusing only on offsetting escaped liability, the standard law and economics theory fails to account for the core problem of variance. This Article provides a risk arbitrage analysis of the relationship between variance, litigation valuation, and optimal deterrence. Starting with settlement …

Evaluation Of Cirs String Doppler Phantom As A Test Tool For Use In A Doppler Ultrasound Quality Assurance Program, Jacinta Browne, S. Cournane, Andrew Fagan

Articles

Ultrasound Doppler systems are routinely used to perform blood flow velocity measurements which assist in the clinical assessment and diagnosis of vascular. Doppler measurements of peak velocities for vascular applications provide an indication of the degree of the stenosis which will ultimately assist in deciding how a patient is managed. It is imperative that Doppler systems are capable of accurately measuring blood flow velocities to ensure correct diagnosis and appropriate patient treatment; therefore such systems should be evaluated regularly as part of a Quality Assurance program. Although a range of Doppler test phantoms have been developed for quality control (QC) …

The internet is a major delivery system of hotel reservations. Approximately 25% of all reservations made at a hotel come directly through the hotel’s website (Douglas, 2012). Another 11% of total reservations are booked online through online travel agent websites, or OTAs, such as Priceline.com or Expedia.com (Douglas, 2012). These additional reservations booked through the OTAs come at a cost to the hotel, however. Typical commissions for OTAs are approximately 25 % of a total booking (Sanders, 2012). In 2010, it was estimated that the commissions associated with these OTA bookings cost hoteliers 2.5 billion dollars (Douglas, 2012). Because of …
