Learning In Both Worlds: Academic Journalism As A Research Outcome, Lisa J. Waller
Learning In Both Worlds: Academic Journalism As A Research Outcome, Lisa J. Waller
Research Journalism
Works of journalism by journalism academics can be valuable outcomes of research without making the claim that they are scholarly works per se. In the discussion of the feature article Learning in both worlds that follows, I make a case for the importance of writing and publishing this piece of journalism as an outcome of my research on the interplay of news media and bilingual education policy in Australia’s Northern Territory 1988-2008. I also advocate the ‘experimental’ possibilities such works of journalism offer for ‘testing’ research findings, concepts and theories.

Targeted Learning Of The Probability Of Success Of An In Vitro Fertilization Program Controlling For Time-Dependent Confounders, Antoine Chambaz, Sherri Rose, Jean Bouyer, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Infertility is a global public health issue and various treatments are available. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an increasingly common treatment method, but accurately assessing the success of IVF programs has proven challenging since they consist of multiple cycles. We present a double robust semiparametric method that incorporates machine learning to estimate the probability of success (i.e., delivery resulting from embryo transfer) of a program of at most four IVF cycles in the French Devenir Apr`es Interruption de la FIV (DAIFI) study and several simulation studies, controlling for time-dependent confounders. We find that the probability of success in the DAIFI …
Quantifying The Regional Water Footprint Of Biofuel Production By Incorporating Hydrologic Modeling, M. Wu, Y. Chiu, Y. Demissie
Quantifying The Regional Water Footprint Of Biofuel Production By Incorporating Hydrologic Modeling, M. Wu, Y. Chiu, Y. Demissie
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
A spatially explicit life cycle water analysis framework is proposed, in which a standardized water footprint methodology is coupled with hydrologic modeling to assess blue water, green water (rainfall), and agricultural grey water discharge in the production of biofuel feedstock at county-level resolution. Grey water is simulated via SWAT, a watershed model. Evapotranspiration (ET) estimates generated with the Penman-Monteith equation and crop parameters were verified by using remote sensing results, a satellite-imagery-derived data set, and other field measurements. Crop irrigation survey data are used to corroborate the estimate of irrigation ET. An application of the concept is presented in a …

Collisionless Reconnection: Magnetic Field Line Interaction, R A. Treumann, W Baumjohann, W. D. Gonzalez
Dartmouth Scholarship
Magneticfieldlinesarequantumobjectscarrying onequantum0=2πh ̄/eofmagneticfluxandhavefinite radius λm. Here we argue that they possess a very specific dynamicalinteraction.Parallelfieldlinesrejecteachother. When confined to a certain area they form two-dimensional lattices of hexagonal structure. We estimate the filling factor of such an area. Anti-parallel field lines, on the other hand, at- tract each other. We identify the physical mechanism as being due to the action of the gauge potential field, which we de- termine quantum mechanically for two parallel and two anti- parallel field lines. The distortion of the quantum electrody- namic vacuum causes a cloud of virtual pairs. We calculate the virtual pair production rate …
Chemometric Analysis Of Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Liquid Chromatographic-Diode Array Detection Data: Peak Resolution, Quantification And Rapid Screening, Hope P. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
This research project sought to explore, compare and develop chemometric methods with the goal of resolving chromatographically overlapped peaks though the use of spectral information gained from the four-way data sets associated with comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography with diode array detection (LC ´ LC-DAD). A chemometric method combining iterative key set factor analysis (IKSFA) and multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) was developed. In the section of urine data analyzed, over 50 peaks were found, with 18 visually observable and 32 additional compounds found only after application of the chemometric method. Upon successful chemometric resolution of chromatographically overlapped peaks, accurate …

Neutralizing Antibodies And Pathogenesis Of Hepatitis C Virus Infection, Samira Fafi-Kremer, Catherine Fauvelle, Daniel J. Felmlee, Mirjam B. Zeisel, Quentin Lepiller, Isabel Fofana, Laura Heydmann, Françoise Stoll-Keller, Thomas F. Baumert
Peninsula Medical School
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The interplay between the virus and host innate and adaptive immune responses determines the outcome of infection. There is increasing evidence that host neutralizing responses play a relevant role in the resulting pathogenesis. Furthermore, viral evasion from host neutralizing antibodies has been revealed to be an important contributor in leading both to viral persistence in acute liver graft infection following liver transplantation, and to chronic viral infection. The development of novel model systems to study HCV entry and neutralization has allowed a detailed understanding of the …

Tilings With T And Skew Tetrominoes, Cynthia Lester
Tilings With T And Skew Tetrominoes, Cynthia Lester
Quercus: Linfield Journal of Undergraduate Research
We consider tiling problems in the integer lattice. Specifically, we look at a set of four T-tetrominoes and four skew tetrominoes and determine when this set can tile rectangles and modified rectangles. Local considerations and coloring arguments are the main methods used to prove the untileability of regions.

Head Start: A True Start To Getting Ahead: A Literature Review Of The Head Start Program As A Primary Poverty Prevention Strategy, Laporsche C. Smith
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The federal Head Start Program plays a vital role in increasing the likelihood that under-privileged children will become academically successful in school, attend college, and become successful citizens. Yet, Head Start continuously struggles to retain its funding and is challenged in its goal of assisting low income children. A review of the literature on Head Start and related early childhood education longitudinal studies will attest to the importance of this program as a primary prevention strategy to reduce poverty, raise public awareness of its benefits, and support the efforts of its advocates to retain and expand its funding at local …

Developing A Vision Of Pre-College Engineering Education, Jill A. Marshall, Leema K. Berland
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
We report the results of a study focused on identifying and articulating an ‘‘epistemic foundation’’ underlying a pre-collegiate focus on engineering. We do so in the context of UTeachEngineering (UTE), a program supported in part by funding by the National Science Foundation and designed to develop a model approach to address the systematic challenges facing this work—from identifying learning goals, to certifying pre- and in-service teachers for engineering courses to developing a research-based high school engineering course. Given the systemic nature of the UTE approach, this model is positioned to serve as a starting point to further the conversation around …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
This phenomenological study examined the impact of Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) teacher-developed curriculum on teaching styles and strategies at two RET sites with common Legacy Cycle training. The study was conducted to assess and document program-specific and National Science Foundation (NSF) goals related to classroom practices and outcomes. We set out to define how the RET program influenced teachers’ teaching style and strategies and how teachers’ new curriculum from the RET program affected students. Twenty-seven science and math teachers participated in interviews at the end of their summer research experience, and twenty of these teachers participated in interviews after …
Do Goals Matter In Engineering Education? An Exploration Of How Goals Influence Outcomes For First Robotics Participants, Jeanine L. Skorinko, James K. Doyle, Gretar Tryggvason
Do Goals Matter In Engineering Education? An Exploration Of How Goals Influence Outcomes For First Robotics Participants, Jeanine L. Skorinko, James K. Doyle, Gretar Tryggvason
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
It has long been recognized that engineers need a variety of skills, including technical and social, to succeed professionally. Attempts to include social skills (i.e., communication, teamwork, and leadership) in engineering education are relatively recent (i.e., within the last decade). Thus, the current study investigates whether social goals influence academic and social outcomes. Four hundred and three highschool aged robotics participants (262 male; 146 female; 22 not specified) completed a survey about their experiences in FIRST Prior to completing the survey, participants learned that an important goal of FIRST was a) social networking, b) academic learning, or c) no goal. …
A Model For Professional Development To Promote Engineering Design As An Integrative Pedagogy Within Stem Education, Joel D. Donna
A Model For Professional Development To Promote Engineering Design As An Integrative Pedagogy Within Stem Education, Joel D. Donna
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Engineering design activities can help educators to apply concepts and processes from within and across STEM domains. To facilitate these connections, there is a need for sustained, job-embedded, and collegial professional development that brings together teachers from across STEM domains to engage in design-based activities. These activities can help teachers better understand engineering design processes and can foster collaborations. This can lead to a culture shift within the school by which integration of STEM concepts and process becomes more seamless for both educators and their students. This paper describes a research-based model for professional development to promote engineering pedagogy to …

Examining The Impact Of Pau Jacaré (Piptadenia Gonoacantha) Growth On Soil Fertility In The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, Aleksandra Ponomareva
Environmental Analysis Program Mellon Student Summer Research Reports
The Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil is an area of astounding diversity in both flora and fauna, taking its place among the top five “biodiversity hotspots” in the world. However, in the past 40 or 50 years the area has been increasingly threatened by the presence of humans – approximately 93% of the Rainforest has disappeared as a result of exploitation (Turner 2004). Unsustainable farming practices, as well as logging, cattle ranching and mining activities have caused soil infertility, water depletion, erosion and destruction of ecosystems. This project examines the effects of the Pau Jacaré, Piptadenia gonoacantha, tree on soil health …
Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Stochastic interventions are a powerful tool to define parameters that measure the causal effect of a realistic intervention that intends to alter the population distribution of an exposure. In this paper we follow the approach described in D\'iaz and van der Laan (2011) to define and estimate the effect of an intervention that is expected to cause a truncation in the population distribution of the exposure. The observed data parameter that identifies the causal parameter of interest is established, as well as its efficient influence function under the non parametric model. Inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW), augmented IPTW and …

Quantum Discord And Classical Correlation Can Tighten The Uncertainty Principle In The Presence Of Quantum Memory, Arun Kumar Pati, Mark M. Wilde, A. R.Usha Devi, A. K. Rajagopal, Sudha
Faculty Publications
Uncertainty relations capture the essence of the inevitable randomness associated with the outcomes of two incompatible quantum measurements. Recently, Berta have shown that the lower bound on the uncertainties of the measurement outcomes depends on the correlations between the observed system and an observer who possesses a quantum memory. If the system is maximally entangled with its memory, the outcomes of two incompatible measurements made on the system can be predicted precisely. Here, we obtain an uncertainty relation that tightens the lower bound of Berta by incorporating an additional term that depends on the quantum discord and the classical correlations …
A Sustainability Component For A First-Year Course For Information Technology Students, Stefan Robila
A Sustainability Component For A First-Year Course For Information Technology Students, Stefan Robila
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The concept of green computing has become a popular label employed by all major IT corporations when promoting either their hardware as energy efficient or asserting that their software solutions improve work performance and reduce the carbon footprint. Yet, how one addresses sustainability in computing is still a developing area and without clear guidelines or standards. Preparing students on topics of computing sustainability is thus essential for ensuring the future professionals have the skills to tackle such an important challenge. In this paper we propose a sustainability module we developed for an introductory computing course. We start by providing a …

Methodological Precision In Qualitative Research: Slavish Adherence Or “Following The Yellow Brick Road?”, John R. Cutcliffe, Henry G. Harder
Methodological Precision In Qualitative Research: Slavish Adherence Or “Following The Yellow Brick Road?”, John R. Cutcliffe, Henry G. Harder
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative research has withstood many challenges on its way to becoming a credible research paradigm, though it remains the case that the paradigm contains ongoing methodological debates. One such debate is, for want of a better expression, the necessity for methodological precision (fundamentalism or purity). While it is accurate that research methodologies are somewhat fluid in that they are refined over time, it is equally correct that some researchers fall into a trap in claiming such fluidity is the reason for their imprecise use of a research methodology. Given that scientific knowledge is inextricably linked to the practice of method …

Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris
Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris
School of Psychology
Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is a fundamental gaze-stabilizing response found in almost all vertebrates, in which eye movements attempt to compensate for the optic flow caused by self-motion. It is an alternating sequence of slow compensatory eye movements made in the direction of stimulus motion and fast eye movements made predominantly in the opposite direction. The timing and amplitude of these slow phases (SPs) and quick phases (QPs) are remarkably variable, and the cause of this variability is poorly understood. In this study principal components analysis was performed on OKN data to illustrate that the variability in correlation matrices across individuals …
