Borrowing Information Across Populations In Estimating Positive And Negative Predictive Values, Ying Huang, Youyi Fong, John Wei, Ziding Feng Oct 2012

Borrowing Information Across Populations In Estimating Positive And Negative Predictive Values, Ying Huang, Youyi Fong, John Wei, Ziding Feng

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A marker's capacity to predict risk of a disease depends on disease prevalence in the target population and its classification accuracy, i.e. its ability to discriminate diseased subjects from non-diseased subjects. The latter is often considered an intrinsic property of the marker; it is independent of disease prevalence and hence more likely to be similar across populations than risk prediction measures. In this paper, we are interested in evaluating the population-specific performance of a risk prediction marker in terms of positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) at given thresholds, when samples are available from the target population …

How To Create A Two-Component Spinor, Charles G. Torre Oct 2012

How To Create A Two-Component Spinor, Charles G. Torre

How to... in 10 minutes or less

Let (M, g) be a spacetime, i.e., a 4-dimensional manifold M and Lorentz signature metric g. The key ingredients needed for constructing spinor fields on the spacetime are: a complex vector bundle E -> M ; an orthonormal frame on TM ; and a solder form relating sections of E to sections of TM (and tensor products thereof). We show how to create a two-component spinor field on the Schwarzschild spacetime using the DifferentialGeometry package in Maple. PDF and Maple worksheets can be downloaded from the links below.

Causal Inference For Networks, Mark J. Van Der Laan Oct 2012

Causal Inference For Networks, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Suppose that we observe a population of causally connected units according to a network. On each unit we observe a set of potentially connected units that contains the true connections, and a longitudinal data structure, which includes time-dependent exposure or treatment, time-dependent covariates, a final outcome of interest. The target quantity of interest is defined as the mean outcome for this group of units if the exposures of the units would be probabilistically assigned according to a known specified mechanism, where the latter is called a stochastic intervention. Causal effects of interest are defined as contrasts of the mean of …

Elementary Principals’ Role In Science Instruction, Patricia Casey, Karen Dunlap, Kristen Brown, Michele Davison Oct 2012

Elementary Principals’ Role In Science Instruction, Patricia Casey, Karen Dunlap, Kristen Brown, Michele Davison

Administrative Issues Journal

This study explores the role elementary school principals play in science education. Specifically, the study employed an online survey of 16 elementary school principals at high-performing campuses in North Texas to explore their perceptions of how they influenced science education on their campuses. The survey used a combination of Likert-type rating scale items and open-ended questions. Responses from elementary principals suggest that the important components of instructional leadership for science included a) collaboration with teachers, b) changing teaching assignments, and c) teacher motivation.

A Comparison Study On Teacher-Centered And Inquiry-Based Instruction In Science Education Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities: What Is Effective?, Jessica Yorke-Servis

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of the study are to examine the effects of inquiry-based and teacher-centered instruction methods when teaching science for middle school students with learning disabilities. These two instructional methods were provided to 81 students in two middle schools located in southern New Jersey. Of those, 30 students with learning disabilities, 15 in each school participated in the study. Both groups were given a pre and post test prior to and after the three weeks of science instruction to evaluate student performance. In addition, a student and teacher survey was provided to examine their satisfaction. The results show that students …

Around The World In 180 Days, Laura Rogers Oct 2012

Around The World In 180 Days, Laura Rogers

Honors Theses

For years, multicultural curriculum has been accepted as "normal curriculum" sprinkled with various holidays celebrated by non-white cultures and the occasional multicultural book. As a result, many students graduate from high school and college ignorant of the various cultures present in our communities, states, our country, and our world. Myself, and others such as Paulo Friere (educator and author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed) and Susan Piazza (associate professor of literacy studies at Western Michigan University), believe that multicultural curriculum should be much more. For teachers to create a thoughtful, reflective, substantive multicultural curriculum they must intentionally create what Susan …

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Matrix-Isolated Iso-Cxbr3 (X=F,Cl,Br): Structure, Properties, And Photochemistry Of Substituted Iso-Tribromomethanes, Lisa George, Aimable Kalume, Scott A. Reid, Brian J. Esselman, Robert J. Mcmahon Oct 2012

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of Matrix-Isolated Iso-Cxbr3 (X=F,Cl,Br): Structure, Properties, And Photochemistry Of Substituted Iso-Tribromomethanes, Lisa George, Aimable Kalume, Scott A. Reid, Brian J. Esselman, Robert J. Mcmahon

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Iso-polyhalomethanes are important reactive intermediates in the condensed and gas-phase chemistry of halomethanes. Building upon our recent study of iso-bromoform, in this work the substituted iso-tribromomethanes (iso-CXBr3; X = F, Cl, Br) were characterized by matrix isolation infrared and UV/Vis spectroscopy, supported by ab initio calculations, to further probe the structure, spectroscopy, properties, and photochemistry of these important intermediates. Selected wavelength laser irradiation of CXBr3 samples in an inert rare gas (typically Ar; mixing ratio 1:500) held at ∼5 K yielded iso-CXBr3 (XBrC–Br–Br or Br2C–Br–X). The observed infrared and UV/Vis absorptions are in excellent …

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognizers Using Spiking Neurons And Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity., James Humble, Susan Denham, Thomas Wennekers Oct 2012

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognizers Using Spiking Neurons And Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity., James Humble, Susan Denham, Thomas Wennekers

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

It has previously been shown that by using spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), neurons can adapt to the beginning of a repeating spatio-temporal firing pattern in their input. In the present work, we demonstrate that this mechanism can be extended to train recognizers for longer spatio-temporal input signals. Using a number of neurons that are mutually connected by plastic synapses and subject to a global winner-takes-all mechanism, chains of neurons can form where each neuron is selective to a different segment of a repeating input pattern, and the neurons are feed-forwardly connected in such a way that both the correct input segment …

A Method For Localizing Energy Dissipation In Blazars Using Fermi Variability, Amanda Dotson, Markos Georganopoulos, Demosthenes Kazanas, Eric S. Perlman

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The distance of a Fermi-detected blazar γ-ray emission site from a supermassive black hole is a matter of active debate. Here we present a method for testing if the GeV emission of powerful blazars is produced within the subparsec-scale broad-line region (BLR) or farther out in the parsec-scale molecular torus (MT) environment If the GeV emission takes place within the BLR, the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the BLR ultraviolet (UV) seed photons that produces the γ-rays takes place at the onset of the Klein–Nishina regime. This causes the electron cooling time to become practically energy-independent and the variation of …
