On The Turbulent Mixing And Ozone Variations Around The Tropical Tropopause Associated With Kelvin Waves, Kazunari Koishi

U.S. - Japan Bilateral Workshop on the Tropical Tropopause Layer: State of the Current Science and Future Observational Needs

The observed variations of ozone around the tropical tropopause layer in relation to large-scale waves both in the altitude and isentropic coordinates were examined by analyzing ozonesondes provided by SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes). Because ozone near this level can be used for the tracer of atmospheric motion, we regarded an ozone enhancement as the signal of a turbulent mixing. Focusing on the vertical fine structure of ozone and temperature, this study presents observed variations of 10 stations near the equator. Based on the signals of Kelvin waves (an eastward-traveling component of equatorial waves) which is filtered in the spectral-frequency …

Can Numerical Models Estimate Indirect Land-Use Change?, Thierry Brunelle, Patrice Dumas Oct 2012

Can Numerical Models Estimate Indirect Land-Use Change?, Thierry Brunelle, Patrice Dumas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Motivated by the conclusions from various modelling studies, modifications to the bioenergy sector regulations are under way in Europe and in the USA to account for emissions from indirect land-use change (ILUC). Despite their influence on the policy-making, evaluations of the capacity of numerical models to estimate ILUC are sparse. To address this void, this paper reviews recent developments in land-use modelling, with a particular focus on the solutions adopted to estimate ILUC due to biofuel production. As indirect effects of bioenergy result from the interplay of various mechanisms, their modelling is a major challenge for land-use science. In recent …

Optimal Agglomerations In Dynamic Economics, William A. Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Athanasios N. Yannacopoulos

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study rational expectations equilibrium problems and social optimum problems in infinite horizon spatial economies in the con- text of a Ramsey type capital accumulation problem with geographical spillovers. We identify sufficient local and global conditions for the emergence (or not) of optimal agglomeration, using techniques from monotone operator theory and spectral theory in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Our analytical methods can be used to systematically study optimal potential agglomeration and clustering in dynamic economics.

The Maximum-Weight Stable Matching Problem: Duality And Efficiency, Xujin Chen, Guoli Ding, Xiaodong Hu, Wenan Zang

Faculty Publications

Given a preference system (G,≺) and an integral weight function defined on the edge set of G (not necessarily bipartite), the maximum-weight stable matching problem is to find a stable matching of (G,≺) with maximum total weight. In this paper we study this NP-hard problem using linear programming and polyhedral approaches. We show that the Rothblum system for defining the fractional stable matching polytope of (G,≺) is totally dual integral if and only if this polytope is integral if and only if (G,≺) has a bipartite representation. We also present a combinatorial polynomial-time algorithm for the maximum-weight stable matching problem …

The “Doomsday” Effect In Climate Policies. Why Is The Present Decade So Crucial To Tackling, Baptiste Perrissin Fabert, Etienne Espagne, Antonin Pottier, Patrice Dumas Oct 2012

The “Doomsday” Effect In Climate Policies. Why Is The Present Decade So Crucial To Tackling, Baptiste Perrissin Fabert, Etienne Espagne, Antonin Pottier, Patrice Dumas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Despite growing scientific evidence that passing a 2°C temperature increase may trigger tipping points in climate dynamics, most Integrated Assessment Models (IAM) based on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) with smooth quadratic damage functions are unable to account for the possibility of strong increase in climate damage. Our IAM RESPONSE makes it possible to bridge this gap by integrating a threshold effect damage function which sets a threshold of temperature increase from which climate damages increase significantly. To fit with on-going climate negotiations, this threshold is set at 2°C. Regardless of the bleak prospect of passing the threshold, it turns out …

Disentangling The Stern/Nordhaus Controversy: Beyond The Discounting Clash, Etienne Espagne, Baptiste Perrissin Fabert, Antonin Pottier, Franck Nadaud, Patrice Dumas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Stern/Nordhaus controversy has polarized the widely disparate beliefs about what to do in order to tackle the climate challenge. To explain differences in results and policy recommendations, comments following the publication of the Stern Review have mainly focused on the role played by the discount rate. A closer look at the actual drivers of the controversy reveals however that Stern and Nordhaus also disagree on two other parameters: technical progress on abatement costs and the climate sensitivity. This paper aims at appraising the relative impacts of such key drivers of the controversy on the social cost of carbon and …

Influence Of Aboveground Vegetation On Seed Bank Composition And Distribution In A Great Basin Desert Sagebrush Community, Kristen M. Pekas, Eugene W. Schupp Oct 2012

Influence Of Aboveground Vegetation On Seed Bank Composition And Distribution In A Great Basin Desert Sagebrush Community, Kristen M. Pekas, Eugene W. Schupp

Articles

The quantity, composition, and spatial dispersion of seed banks can greatly affect community dynamics. While seed banks of hot deserts have been studied extensively, little is known about seed banks in cold deserts, in particular the relationship between the seed bank and the aboveground vegetation. We investigated the relationship between the seed bank and aboveground vegetation and the effect of microhabitat (shrub interspace or beneath shrub) and aboveground community phase (high or low perennial bunchgrass cover) on the seed bank of a Great Basin Desert sagebrush community. The seed bank and aboveground vegetation differed in their most dominant species, resulting …

Protein P7 Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Is Located At The Three-Fold Axis Of The Unexpanded Procapsid, Garrett Katz, Hui Wei, Alexandra Alimova, Al Katz, David Gene Morgan, Paul Gottlieb Oct 2012

Protein P7 Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Is Located At The Three-Fold Axis Of The Unexpanded Procapsid, Garrett Katz, Hui Wei, Alexandra Alimova, Al Katz, David Gene Morgan, Paul Gottlieb

Publications and Research

The objective of this study was to determine the location of protein P7, the RNA packaging factor, in the procapsid of the φ6 cystovirus. A comparison of cryo-electron microscopy high-resolution single particle reconstructions of the φ6 complete unexpanded procapsid, the protein P2-minus procapsid (P2 is the RNA directed RNA-polymerase), and the P7-minus procapsid, show that prior to RNA packaging the P7 protein is located near the three-fold axis of symmetry. Difference maps highlight the precise position of P7 and demonstrate that in P7-minus particles the P2 proteins are less localized with reduced densities at the three-fold axes. We propose that …

Quantum Locally Compact Metric Spaces, Frédéric Latrémolière Oct 2012

Quantum Locally Compact Metric Spaces, Frédéric Latrémolière

Mathematics Preprint Series

We introduce the notion of a quantum locally compact metric space, which is the noncommutative analogue of a locally compact metric space, and generalize to the non-unital setting the notion of quantum metric spaces introduced by Rieffel. We then provide several examples of such structures, including the Moyal plane, compact quantum metric spaces and locally compact metric spaces. This paper provides an answer to the question raised in the literature about the proper notion of a quantum metric space in the nonunital setup and offers important insights into noncommutative geometry for non compact quantum spaces.

Behavior Of Regular Triangular Joints Under Cyclic Shearing, Shuh-Gi Chern, Tsu-Chiang Cheng, Wen-Ya Chen Oct 2012

Behavior Of Regular Triangular Joints Under Cyclic Shearing, Shuh-Gi Chern, Tsu-Chiang Cheng, Wen-Ya Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Synthetic regular triangular joints made of gypsum plaster were cyclicly sheared to measure asperity degradation and mathematical behavior of regular triangular joints. Laboratory cyclic shear tests were conducted for three joint types under three different normal stresses. Asperity degradation and shear strength of joints were found to be a function of joint roughness, normal stress, shearing displacement and number of loading cycles. Based on the experimental results, mathematical models were developed for evaluation of shear strength in cyclic loading conditions. Comparison of the test results with that of the proposed model, it was found a good agreement was observed.

Optimal Dynamic Temporal-Spatial Paramter Inversion Methods For The Marine Integrated Element Water Quality Model Using A Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang Oct 2012

Optimal Dynamic Temporal-Spatial Paramter Inversion Methods For The Marine Integrated Element Water Quality Model Using A Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Certain marine water quality or ecosystem model parameters vary in space and time because of different plankton taxonomic compositions over a large domain. The same parameter vectors can result in suboptimal calibration. In the present paper, a data-driven model based on an artificial neural network is developed to inverse the values of model parameters dynamically. All training data used are calculated using numerical water quality models from the results of multiparameter matching design cases such that physical properties are not disturbed. The aim is to determine the relationship between the model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. …

Design And Implementation Of An Simulation Of Water Wave Transformation Using Higher Order Mild-Slope Equation, Yuan-Jyh Lan, Tai-Wen Hsu, Ta-Yuan Lin, Shin-Jye Liang Oct 2012

Design And Implementation Of An Simulation Of Water Wave Transformation Using Higher Order Mild-Slope Equation, Yuan-Jyh Lan, Tai-Wen Hsu, Ta-Yuan Lin, Shin-Jye Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A higher-order mild-slope equation (HOMSE) is derived based on theory of Hsu et al. [14]. Depth function is approximated up to third-order accurate in terms of both wave nonlinearity and bottom slope. Classical Galerkin method is used to solve HOMSE. Developed model is verified with a series of benchmark tests, including propagation of a sinusoidal wave past a submerged bar, wave propagating on a sloping bed, wave propagating over an elliptic shoal on a uniform slope, and wave propagating through a semicircular slope bottom, respectively. Computed results are compared with experiment data and prediction of low-order mild-slope equation model as …
