Ensure: A Time Sensitive Transport Protocol To Achieve Reliability Over Wireless In Petrochemical Plants, Leigh Sheneman Oct 2012

Ensure: A Time Sensitive Transport Protocol To Achieve Reliability Over Wireless In Petrochemical Plants, Leigh Sheneman

Computer Science Theses

As society becomes more reliant on the resources extracted in petroleum refinement the production demand for petrochemical plants increases. A key element is producing efficiently while maintaining safety through constant monitoring of equipment feedback. Currently, temperature and flow sensors are deployed at various points of production and 10/100 Ethernet cable is installed to connect them to a master control unit. This comes at a great monetary cost, not only at the time of implementation but also when repairs are required. The capability to provide plant wide wireless networks would both decrease investment cost and downtime needed for repairs. However, the …

Two-Photon Time-Lapse Microscopy Of Bodipy-Cholesterol Reveals Anomalous Sterol Diffusion In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Frederik W. Lund, Michael A. Lomholt, Lukasz M. Solanko, Robert Bittman, Daniel Wüstner Oct 2012

Two-Photon Time-Lapse Microscopy Of Bodipy-Cholesterol Reveals Anomalous Sterol Diffusion In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Frederik W. Lund, Michael A. Lomholt, Lukasz M. Solanko, Robert Bittman, Daniel Wüstner

Publications and Research

Background Cholesterol is an important membrane component, but our knowledge about its transport in cells is sparse. Previous imaging studies using dehydroergosterol (DHE), an intrinsically fluorescent sterol from yeast, have established that vesicular and non-vesicular transport modes contribute to sterol trafficking from the plasma membrane. Significant photobleaching, however, limits the possibilities for in-depth analysis of sterol dynamics using DHE. Co-trafficking studies with DHE and the recently introduced fluorescent cholesterol analog BODIPY-cholesterol (BChol) suggested that the latter probe has utility for prolonged live-cell imaging of sterol transport. Results We found that BChol is very photostable under two-photon (2P)-excitation allowing the acquisition …

Tornado Warnings In Three Southern States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Public Response Patterns, William Donner, Havidan Rodriguez, Walter Diaz Oct 2012

Tornado Warnings In Three Southern States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Public Response Patterns, William Donner, Havidan Rodriguez, Walter Diaz

Sociology Faculty Publications

Recent research in three Southern states supplied data describing the role community structure and culture played in shaping public response to tornado risks. The following study identifies and describes how residents received, made sense of, and ultimately used information to make decisions about responding to warnings. In addition to a range of theoretical concerns, research was also intended to develop a set of safety policies derived from what the data reveals about the social psychology of risk perception, economic constraints to shelter, and the cultural aspects of response.Data analysis reveals a diverse set of social factors governing community response to …

America’S First Patents, Michael Risch Oct 2012

America’S First Patents, Michael Risch

Florida Law Review

Courts and commentators vigorously debate early American patent history because of a spotty documentary record. To fill these gaps, scholars have examined the adoption of the Intellectual Property Clause of the Constitution, correspondence, dictionaries, and British and colonial case law. But there is one largely ignored body of information—the content of early patents themselves. While many debate what the founders thought, no one asks what early inventors thought—and those thoughts are telling. This Article is the first comprehensive examination of how early inventors and their patents should inform our current thoughts about the patent system.

To better understand our early …

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander Oct 2012

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander

The Journal of Problem Solving

This paper provides a critical examination of the current state and future possibility of formal cognitive theory for insight problem solving and its associated “aha!” experience. Insight problems are contrasted with move problems, which have been formally defined and studied extensively by cognitive psychologists since the pioneering work of Alan Newell and Herbert Simon. To facilitate our discussion, a number of classical brainteasers are presented along with their solutions and some conclusions derived from observing the behavior of many students trying to solve them. Some of these problems are interesting in their own right, and many of them have not …

Human Performance On Hard Non-Euclidean Graph Problems: Vertex Cover, Sarah Carruthers, Michael E. J. Masson, Ulrike Stege Oct 2012

Human Performance On Hard Non-Euclidean Graph Problems: Vertex Cover, Sarah Carruthers, Michael E. J. Masson, Ulrike Stege

The Journal of Problem Solving

Recent studies on a computationally hard visual optimization problem, the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP), indicate that humans are capable of finding close to optimal solutions in near-linear time. The current study is a preliminary step in investigating human performance on another hard problem, the Minimum Vertex Cover Problem, in which solvers attempt to find a smallest set of vertices that ensures that every edge in an undirected graph is incident with at least one of the selected vertices. We identify appropriate measures of performance, examine features of problem instances that impact performance, and describe strategies typically employed by participants to …

Relevancy In Problem Solving: A Computational Framework, Johan Kwisthout Oct 2012

Relevancy In Problem Solving: A Computational Framework, Johan Kwisthout

The Journal of Problem Solving

When computer scientists discuss the computational complexity of, for example, finding the shortest path from building A to building B in some town or city, their starting point typically is a formal description of the problem at hand, e.g., a graph with weights on every edge where buildings correspond to vertices, routes between buildings to edges, and route-distances to edge-weights. Given such a formal description, either tractability or intractability of the problem is established, by proving that the problem either enjoys a polynomial time algorithm or is NP-hard. However, this problem description is in fact an abstraction of the actual …
