Clean Energy: The Economics Of Why And How, Adele C. Morris Oct 2012

Clean Energy: The Economics Of Why And How, Adele C. Morris

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

One rationale for large public investments in clean energy technology points to concerns that have not been addressed by other policies, most notably greenhouse gas emissions and energy security. Another inspiration for clean energy policy suggests that strategic government investments would increase domestic firms' market share of a growing industry and thus help domestic firms and workers. This lecture examines the economic case for clean energy policy in the United States and addresses the issues state and local governments confront in building a clean energy industry.

Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen Oct 2012

Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A conventional biodiesel plant utilizing two distillation columns to purify unreacted reactants and products is considered in this study. Thermodynamic analyses are used to assess the performance of the existing distillation columns, and reduce the costs of operation by appropriate retrofits in a biodiesel production plant. After the retrofits, the overall exergy loss for the two columns has decreased from 2430.87 kW to 1674.12 kW.

A reactive distillation is developed for esterification of lauric acid with methanol using equilibrium and nonequilibrium models. Equilibrium modeling dominated during last few decades due to their straightforward mathematical modeling. In reality, separation depends on …

Biomechanical Effects Of Obesity On Balance, Hannah Del Porto, Celia Pechak, Darla Smith, Rebecca Reed-Jones

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 301-320, 2012. The objective of this review was to analyze the current literature related to the effects of obesity on balance. These effects were observed during conditions of static balance, perturbed balance and dynamic balance during gait. The literature review included studies focused on the biomechanical effects of obesity, the relationship between weight loss and balance, and the relative efficacy of weight loss as a balance intervention. The older adult population, which faces increased risk of falls and related injuries, was highlighted where targeted research was available. The existing literature provides evidence for …

America’S Favorite Illiquid Investment: An Examination Of The Changing Social Perception Of Homeownership , Jeremiah J. Lee Oct 2012

America’S Favorite Illiquid Investment: An Examination Of The Changing Social Perception Of Homeownership , Jeremiah J. Lee

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Purchasing a home is traditionally touted as one of the best investments an individual can make, but this advice may be simply too generic to be useful or applied too broadly to be good counsel. Social pressures encouraging homeownership in America have been fostered by decades of government programs. Modern uses of the family home as a financial investment, such as flipping homes or using a home equity line of credit to subsidize a higher standard of living, illustrate a perceptual shift in which many modern homeowners have come to consider the family home principally a tool for financial gain …

Decline In Health For Older Adults: 5-Year Change In 13 Key Measures Of Standardized Health, Paula H. Diehr, Stephen M. Thielke, Anne B. Newman, Calvin H. Hirsch, Russell Tracy

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Introduction

The health of older adults declines over time, but there are many ways of measuring health. We examined whether all measures declined at the same rate, or whether some aspects of health were less sensitive to aging than others.

Methods

We compared the decline in 13 measures of physical, mental, and functional health from the Cardiovascular Health Study: hospitalization, bed days, cognition, extremity strength, feelings about life as a whole, satisfaction with the purpose of life, self-rated health, depression, digit symbol substitution test, grip strength, ADLs, IADLs, and gait speed. Each measure was standardized against self-rated health. We compared …

Linear Covariance Techniques For Closed-Loop Guidance Navigation And Control System Design And Analysis, Randall S. Christensen, David Geller Oct 2012

Linear Covariance Techniques For Closed-Loop Guidance Navigation And Control System Design And Analysis, Randall S. Christensen, David Geller

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

While linear covariance analysis is widely used for navigation system design and analysis, it is often overlooked as a tool for closed-loop guidance navigation and control (GN&C) system design and analysis. This article presents an overview of the techniques and methods required to develop a linear covariance analysis tool for a close-loop GN&C system. Then, using a simple nonlinear closed-loop GN&C problem as a guide, the capabilities of linear covariance analysis for the design and analysis of closed-loop systems are demonstrated. It is shown that linear covariance can be accurately applied to a closedloop system with time-to-go guidance, dead-reckoning navigation, …

Polar Coding To Achieve The Holevo Capacity Of A Pure-Loss Optical Channel, Saikat Guha, Mark M. Wilde Oct 2012

Polar Coding To Achieve The Holevo Capacity Of A Pure-Loss Optical Channel, Saikat Guha, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

In the low-energy high-energy-efficiency regime of classical optical communications - relevant to deep-space optical channels - there is a big gap between reliable communication rates achievable via conventional optical receivers and the ultimate (Holevo) capacity. Achieving the Holevo capacity requires not only optimal codes but also receivers that make collective measurements on long (modulated) codeword waveforms, and it is impossible to implement these collective measurements via symbol-by-symbol detection along with classical postprocessing [1], [2]. Here, we apply our recent results on the classical-quantum polar code [3] - the first near-explicit, linear, symmetric-Holevo-rate achieving code - to the lossy optical channel, …

Explicit Capacity-Achieving Receivers For Optical Communication And Quantum Reading, Mark M. Wilde, Saikat Guha, Si Hui Tan, Seth Lloyd Oct 2012

Explicit Capacity-Achieving Receivers For Optical Communication And Quantum Reading, Mark M. Wilde, Saikat Guha, Si Hui Tan, Seth Lloyd

Faculty Publications

An important practical open question has been to design explicit, structured optical receivers that achieve the Holevo limit in the contexts of optical communication and "quantum reading." The Holevo limit is an achievable rate that is higher than the Shannon limit of any known optical receiver. We demonstrate how a sequential decoding approach can achieve the Holevo limit for both of these settings. A crucial part of our scheme for both settings is a non-destructive "vacuum-or-not" measurement that projects an n-symbol modulated codeword onto the n-fold vacuum state or its orthogonal complement, such that the post-measurement state is either the …

Automated Synthesis Of Dynamically Corrected Quantum Gates, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Hendrik Bluhm, Lorenza Viola Oct 2012

Automated Synthesis Of Dynamically Corrected Quantum Gates, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Hendrik Bluhm, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

Dynamically corrected gates are extended to non-Markovian open quantum systems where limitations on the available controls and/or the presence of control noise make existing analytical approaches unfeasible. A computational framework for the synthesis of dynamically corrected gates is formalized that allows sensitivity against non-Markovian decoherence and control errors to be perturbatively minimized via numerical search, resulting in robust gate implementations. Explicit sequences for achieving universal high-fidelity control in a singlet-triplet spin qubit subject to realistic system and control constraint are provided, which simultaneously cancel to the leading order the dephasing due to non-Markovian nuclear-bath dynamics and voltage noise affecting the …

Introduction Of Key Performance Indicators To The Dynamics Of Planned Change: A Modern Study, Tommy Wells Oct 2012

Introduction Of Key Performance Indicators To The Dynamics Of Planned Change: A Modern Study, Tommy Wells

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A private High Technology firm whose headquarters are located in the Midwest has just completed several upgrades to replace an in-house legacy application system in which the primary use was to track defects of the firm's custom made software. The firm's implementation of a third party's software suite to replace the in-house legacy application was studied using a case study method, which implemented key performance indicators to the change theory called "The Dynamics of Planned Change" introduced by Lippitt, Watson, and Westley. The key performance indicators were introduced as a way to determine if the firm's actions could be validated …

Energetic Galaxy-Wide Outflows In High-Redshift Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies Hosting Agn Activity, C. M. Harrison, D. M. Alexander, A. M. Swinbank, Ian Smail, S. Alaghband-Zadeh, F. E. Bauer, S. C. Chapman, A. Del Moro, R. C. Hickox

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present integral field spectroscopy observations, covering the [O III]4959,5007 emission-line doublet of eight high-redshift (z=1.4-3.4) ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) that host Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, including known sub-millimetre luminous galaxies (SMGs). The targets have moderate radio luminosities that are typical of high-redshift ULIRGs (L(1.4GHz)=10^(24)-10^(25)W/Hz) and therefore are not radio-loud AGN. We de-couple kinematic components due to the galaxy dynamics and mergers from those due to outflows. We find evidence in the four most luminous systems (L([O III])>~10^(43)erg/s) for the signatures of large-scale energetic outflows: extremely broad [O III] emission (FWHM ~ 700-1400km/s) across ~4-15kpc, with high velocity …

Periodic Structure In The Megaparsec-Scale Jet Of Pks 0637-752, L. E.H. Godfrey, E. S. Perlman Oct 2012

Periodic Structure In The Megaparsec-Scale Jet Of Pks 0637-752, L. E.H. Godfrey, E. S. Perlman

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present 18 GHz Australia Telescope Compact Array imaging of the megaparsec-scale quasar jet PKS 0637–752 with angular resolution ~0farcs58. We draw attention to a spectacular train of quasi-periodic knots along the inner 11'' of the jet, with average separation ~1.1 arcsec (7.6 kpc projected). We consider two classes of model to explain the periodic knots: those that involve a static pattern through which the jet plasma travels (e.g., stationary shocks) and those that involve modulation of the jet engine. Interpreting the knots as re-confinement shocks implies the jet kinetic power Q jet ~ 1046 erg s–1, but the constant …
