Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter Oct 2012

Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter

Theses and Dissertations

We present a solution to animating interactions between characters and thin, non-rigid bodies using a passive optical motion capture system. Prior work in human body motion capture can accurately recreate human motion but this work is not adequate because it does not allow for interactions with a non-rigid body. Prior work in face and cloth motion capture handles non-rigid planes but rope is better handled with a curved spline rather than a curved plane. The segmented motion is in the form of un-indexed motion capture data. After segmenting the motion of the thin, non-rigid body and the human character the …

Lifecycle Energy Consumption Prediction Of Residential Buildings By Incorporating Longitudinal Uncertainties, Endong Wang, Zhigang Shen Oct 2012

Lifecycle Energy Consumption Prediction Of Residential Buildings By Incorporating Longitudinal Uncertainties, Endong Wang, Zhigang Shen

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Accurate prediction of buildings’ lifecycle energy consumption is a critical part in lifecycle assessment of residential buildings. Longitudinal variations in building conditions, weather conditions and building’s service life can cause significant deviation of the prediction from the real lifecycle energy consumption. The objective is to improve the accuracy of lifecycle energy consumption prediction by properly modelling the longitudinal variations in residential energy consumption model using Markov chain based stochastic approach. A stochastic Markov model considering longitudinal uncertainties in building condition, degree days, and service life is developed: 1) Building’s service life is estimated through Markov deterioration curve derived from actual …

The physical, chemical, and biological processes involving organics in ice in the environment impact a number of atmospheric and biogeochemical cycles. Organic material in snow or ice may be biological in origin, deposited from aerosols or atmospheric gases, or formed chemically in situ. In this manuscript, we review the current state of knowledge regarding the sources, properties, and chemistry of organic materials in environmental ices. Several outstanding questions remain to be resolved and fundamental data gathered before an accurate model of transformations and transport of organic species in the cryosphere will be possible. For example, more information is needed regarding …

Spectral Cross Correlation As A Supervised Approach For The Analysis Of Complex Raman Datasets: The Case Of Nanoparticles In Biological Cells, Mark Keating, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne Oct 2012

Spectral Cross Correlation As A Supervised Approach For The Analysis Of Complex Raman Datasets: The Case Of Nanoparticles In Biological Cells, Mark Keating, Franck Bonnier, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Spectral Cross-correlation is introduced as a methodology to identify the presence and subcellular distribution of nanoparticles in cells. Raman microscopy is employed to spectroscopically image biological cells previously exposed to polystyrene nanoparticles, as a model for the study of nano-bio interactions. The limitations of previously deployed strategies of K-means clustering analysis and principal component analysis are discussed and a novel methodology of Spectral Cross Correlation Analysis is introduced and compared with the performance of Classical Least Squares Analysis, in both unsupervised and supervised modes. The previous study demonstrated the feasibility of using Raman spectroscopy to map cells and identify polystyrene …

Experiments were performed with pure and doped lead halides to investigate growth conditions for large crystals. Direct observations during the growth of 25 mm diameter crystal growing at high velocities showed that torodial type instability is formed at the solid/liquid interface during the growth. These instabilities translate into point defects and line defects. We report the results of extensive experiments on Lead bromide doped with silver bromide to study double diffusive transport. Control of instability at the interface provides a great improvement in the quality of crystal more specifically point defects and line defects. The controlled doping controls the defects …

One-Pot Synthesis Of (Z)-B-Sulfonyl Enoates From Ethyl Propiolate, C. Wade Downey, Smaranda Craciun, Ana M. Neferu, Christina A. Vivelo, Carly J. Mueller, Brian C. Southall, Stephanie Corsi, Eric W. Etchill, Ryan J. Sault Oct 2012

One-Pot Synthesis Of (Z)-B-Sulfonyl Enoates From Ethyl Propiolate, C. Wade Downey, Smaranda Craciun, Ana M. Neferu, Christina A. Vivelo, Carly J. Mueller, Brian C. Southall, Stephanie Corsi, Eric W. Etchill, Ryan J. Sault

Chemistry Faculty Publications

B-Sulfonyl enoates may be synthesized through a one-pot two-step sequence from ethyl propiolate with good to excellent selectivity for the Z isomer. Trialkylamines catalyze thioconjugate additions of aryl thiols, and alkoxides catalyze the addition of aliphatic thiols. Addition of meta-chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA) and LiClO4 to the reaction mixture provides rapid access to the sulfonyl enoates. Yields of the pure Z isomer range from 51 – 90%.

One-Pot Three-Step Thioconjugate Addition-Oxidation-Diels–Alder Reactions Of Ethyl Propiolate, C. Wade Downey, Smaranda Craciun, Christina A. Vivelo, Ana M. Neferu, Carly J. Mueller, Stephanie Corsi Oct 2012

One-Pot Three-Step Thioconjugate Addition-Oxidation-Diels–Alder Reactions Of Ethyl Propiolate, C. Wade Downey, Smaranda Craciun, Christina A. Vivelo, Ana M. Neferu, Carly J. Mueller, Stephanie Corsi

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Ethyl propiolate undergoes one-pot three-step thioconjugate addition-oxidation-Diels–Alder cycloaddition when treated with a variety of thiols in the presence of catalytic base, meta-chloroperbenzoic acid, lithium perchlorate, and cyclopentadiene. The reaction of S‑aryl thiols is catalyzed by trialkylamines, and the reaction of aliphatic thiols requires catalytic alkoxide base. Yields of the major diastereomer of the conveniently functionalized bicyclic products range from 47 to 81% depending upon the thiol reactant, which compares favorably to yields observed when the entire synthesis is performed step by step.

Efficient High-Dimensional Entanglement Imaging With A Compressive-Sensing Double-Pixel Camera, Gregory A. Howland, John C. Howell Oct 2012

Efficient High-Dimensional Entanglement Imaging With A Compressive-Sensing Double-Pixel Camera, Gregory A. Howland, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We implement a double-pixel compressive-sensing camera to efficiently characterize, at high resolution, the spatially entangled fields that are produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This technique leverages sparsity in spatial correlations between entangled photons to improve acquisition times over raster scanning by a scaling factor up to n2/log(n) for n-dimensional images. We image at resolutions up to 1024 dimensions per detector and demonstrate a channel capacity of 8.4 bits per photon. By comparing the entangled photons’ classical mutual information in conjugate bases, we violate an entropic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen separability criterion for all measured resolutions. More broadly, our result indicates that …

Self-Consistent Magnetic Stellar Evolution Models Of The Detached, Solar-Type Eclipsing Binary Ef Aquarii, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer Oct 2012

Self-Consistent Magnetic Stellar Evolution Models Of The Detached, Solar-Type Eclipsing Binary Ef Aquarii, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We introduce a new one-dimensional stellar evolution code, based on the existing Dartmouth code, that self-consistently accounts for the presence of a globally pervasive magnetic field. The methods involved in perturbing the equations of stellar structure, the equation of state, and the mixing-length theory of convection are presented and discussed. As a first test of the code's viability, stellar evolution models are computed for the components of a solar-type, detached eclipsing binary (DEB) system, EF Aquarii, shown to exhibit large disagreements with stellar models. The addition of the magnetic perturbation corrects the radius and effective temperature discrepancies observed in EF …

Intrinsic Rotation Of Toroidally Confined Magnetohydrodynamics, Jorge A. Morales, Wouter J. T. T. Bos, Kai Schneider, David C. Montgomery Oct 2012

Intrinsic Rotation Of Toroidally Confined Magnetohydrodynamics, Jorge A. Morales, Wouter J. T. T. Bos, Kai Schneider, David C. Montgomery

Dartmouth Scholarship

The spatiotemporal self-organization of viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamics in a toroidal geometry is studied. Curl-free toroidal magnetic and electric fields are imposed. It is observed in our simulations that a flow is generated, which evolves from dominantly poloidal to toroidal when the Lundquist numbers are increased. It is shown that this toroidal organization of the flow is consistent with the tendency of the velocity field to align with the magnetic field. Up-down asymmetry of the geometry causes the generation of a nonzero toroidal angular momentum.

Predictability Of Biomass Burning In Response To Climate Changes, A.-L. Daniau, Megan Walsh Oct 2012

Predictability Of Biomass Burning In Response To Climate Changes, A.-L. Daniau, Megan Walsh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Climate is an important control on biomass burning, but the sensitivity of fire to changes in temperature and moisture balance has not been quantified. We analyze sedimentary charcoal records to show that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates. Analyses of paleo- fire data show that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels, and that temperature is quantitatively the most important driver of changes in biomass burning over the past 21,000 yrs. Given that a similar relationship between climate drivers and fire emerges from …
