Likelihood Ratio Tests For The Mean Structure Of Correlated Functional Processes, Ana-Maria Staicu, Yingxing Li, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David M. Ruppert

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The paper introduces a general framework for testing hypotheses about the structure of the mean function of complex functional processes. Important particular cases of the proposed framework are: 1) testing the null hypotheses that the mean of a functional process is parametric against a nonparametric alternative; and 2) testing the null hypothesis that the means of two possibly correlated functional processes are equal or differ by only a simple parametric function. A global pseudo likelihood ratio test is proposed and its asymptotic distribution is derived. The size and power properties of the test are confirmed in realistic simulation scenarios. Finite …

Linked Data Demystified: Practical Efforts To Transform Contentdm Metadata For The Linked Data Cloud, Silvia B. Southwick, Cory K. Lampert

Library Faculty Presentations

The library literature and events like the ALA Annual Conference have been inundated with presentations and articles on linked data. At UNLV Libraries, we understand the importance of linked data in helping to better service our users. We have designed and initiated a pilot project to apply linked data concepts to the practical task of transforming a sample set of our CONTENTdm digital collections data into future-oriented linked data. This presentation will outline rationale for beginning work in linked data and detail the phases we will undertake in the proof of concept project. We hope through this research experiment to …

Faculty Publications

Thermodynamic stability, configurational motions and internal forces of haemoglobin (Hb) of three endotherms (platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus; domestic chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus and human, Homo sapiens) and an ectotherm (salt water crocodile, Crocodylus porosus) were investigated using circular dichroism, incoherent elastic neutron scattering and coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations. The experimental results from Hb solutions revealed a direct correlation between protein resilience, melting temperature and average body temperature of the different species on the 0.1 ns time scale. Molecular forces appeared to be adapted to permit conformational fluctuations with a root mean square displacement close to 1.2 Å at the corresponding average …

The Chemical Origin Of Behavior Is Rooted In Abiogenesis, Brian C. Larson, R. Paul Jensen, Niles Lehman Nov 2012

The Chemical Origin Of Behavior Is Rooted In Abiogenesis, Brian C. Larson, R. Paul Jensen, Niles Lehman

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe the initial realization of behavior in the biosphere, which we term behavioral chemistry. If molecules are complex enough to attain a stochastic element to their structural conformation in such as a way as to radically affect their function in a biological (evolvable) setting, then they have the capacity to behave. This circumstance is described here as behavioral chemistry, unique in its definition from the colloquial chemical behavior. This transition between chemical behavior and behavioral chemistry need be explicit when discussing the root cause of behavior, which itself lies squarely at the origins of life and is the foundation …

Challenging The Grammar Of Schooling: Individually Guided Education, 1969-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim

Education and Culture

The late 1950s and the 1960s witnessed the emergence of a series of educational innovations, which can be divided into the following four categories. First, concerns for equality of opportunity led to efforts at achieving desegregation and the use of extensive busing for transporting students to consolidated schools and/or districts (Carlson, 1996; Pulliam & Patten, 1999). Second, the successful launch of Sputnik led American secondary schools to increase the number of courses in math, science, and foreign languages, while the federal government sponsored a number of curriculum projects with an emphasis on the structure of discipline (Pinar, Reynolds, Slattery, & …

John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson Nov 2012

John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson

Education and Culture

Today, whether in the name of accountability, higher standards, or economic competitiveness, we risk putting the formal school curriculum ahead of the child—a problem that Dewey addressed in 1902. Advantaged and influential individuals and groups unconsciously surrender the individuality, aspirations, and humanity of the child to privileged interests and voices, and in so doing, they unwittingly give or take away the professional roles and responsibilities of educators. That is, educators are frequently stripped of the freedom to think for themselves, to make professional judgments, and to teach in ways that they consider are in the best interest of children and …

The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger Nov 2012

The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger

Education and Culture

This paper is an attempt to not only gain a better understanding of the "leftist" ideology in educational research by examining one its most prolific authors, but also to take a hard look at how leftist education literature has "allowed" power-ful conservative (or "rightist") coalitions to set the educational agenda in the United States for the next unforeseeable years.

John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss Nov 2012

John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss

Education and Culture

John Dewey's Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education, was published in 1916. It is still the best-known work in philosophy of education by an American author, and has remained in print down to the present time. Democracy and Education differs from many texts in the philosophy of education in that it was not written merely as a philosophy to be "applied" to education. It was made possible in large part by Dewey's participation in the Laboratory School at the University of Chicago from 1896 to 1904. Dewey's own experience with faculty and students at that …

Extended Bridge Software Design Pattern, Andrew J. Haigh Nov 2012

Extended Bridge Software Design Pattern, Andrew J. Haigh

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Software engineers are taught that they should separate form and function. This allows a user interface or front-end to be designed and implemented independently of the engine or back-end. Using an abstracted interface class provides the opportunity to develop different user interfaces for the same back-end, as each new user interface will all be derived from this agreed upon abstracted interface. Using the Bridge pattern allows the user to also decouple the abstraction from its implementation, providing additional flexibility as they developed multiple user interfaces. However, user interfaces are typically designed as a single unit, the renderer, even the Bridge …

Capturing Fleeting Intermediates In A Catalytic C-H Amination Reaction Cycle, Richard H. Perry, Thomas J. Cahill Iii, Jennifer L. Roizen, Justin Du Bois, Richard N. Zare

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

We have applied an ambient ionization technique, desorption electrospray ionization MS, to identify transient reactive species of an archetypal C–H amination reaction catalyzed by a dirhodium tetracarboxylate complex. Using this analytical method, we have detected previously proposed short-lived reaction intermediates, including two nitrenoid complexes that differ in oxidation state. Our findings suggest that an Rh-nitrene oxidant can react with hydrocarbon substrates through a hydrogen atom abstraction pathway and raise the intriguing possibility that two catalytic C–H amination pathways may be operative in a typical bulk solution reaction. As highlighted by these results, desorption electrospray ionization MS should have broad applicability …
