Prediction Of Rupture Analysis And Hemodynamic Factors On Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm For Normal And High Blood Pressure Subjects / Muhammad Rusydan Amir Hamzah, Amir Hamzah Muhammad Rusydan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulging and widening of the blood vessel due the weakening of aortic wall which may lead to rupture of aneurysm if it is not treated. Normally, the treatment of AAA is considered if the maximal diameter exceeds around 5-6cm. The increasing of the bulge is proportional to potential of aneurysm rupture. The ultimate goal of the study is to investigate the hemodynamic factors at the AAA region in terms of velocity, pressure and wall shear stress for normal and high blood pressure both at resting and exercise condition. The aneurysm model used in this …

Electrical And Dielectric Properties Of Solid And Nanocomposite Polymer Electrolytes Based On Chitosan / Shujahadeen Bakr Aziz, Shujahadeen Bakr Aziz

Student Works (2010-2019)

In solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and nano-composite polymer electrolytes (NCPEs) the ion conduction mechanism is still not well understood. This motivates us to study the electrical and dielectric properties of solid polymer electrolytes (CS:AgTf, CS:LiTf and CS:NaTf ) and nano-composite polymer electrolytes ((1-x)(0.9CS:0.1AgTf)-xAl2O3 (0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.1), (1-x)(0.9CS:0.1NaTf)-xAl2O3 (0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.1) and (1- x)(0.9CS:0.1LiTf)-xAl2O3 (0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.1)) based on chitosan. In the present work the SPEs and NCPEs were prepared by the solution cast technique. The XRD results reveal the increase of amorphous fraction in chitosan upon the addition of salts. The UV-vis, TEM, SEM …

Stratigraphy Of The Ransi Member Of The Middle Eocene To Oligocene Tatau Formation In The Tatau-Bintulu Area, Sarawak, East Malaysia / Wong Yien Lim, Yien Lim Wong

Student Works (2010-2019)

A recent study in the Tatau-Bintulu area indicates that the Ransi Member which was originally dated as Upper Miocene to Pliocene (Kamaludin Hassan, 2004) is part of the Upper Eocene to Upper Oligocene Tatau Formation. This finding is inconsistent with that of Liechti, et.al (1960) who proposed that it was equivalent to the Middle to Upper Miocene Begrih Formation while Ismail (2000) proposed that it was equivalent to the Upper Miocene to Pliocene Balingian Formation. The study area is located in a horst bounded by two parallel NE-SW trending faults 4.5 km apart. The gently folded Ransi Member that is …

Syntheses Of Nanoparticles By Wire Explosion Technique / Lee Yen Sian, Yen Sian Lee Jan 2012

Syntheses Of Nanoparticles By Wire Explosion Technique / Lee Yen Sian, Yen Sian Lee

Student Works (2010-2019)

Nanoparticles generally refer to particles with sizes less than 100 nm. They exhibit distinguished properties compared to their bulk form due to their small size and high surface-to-volume ratio. Various methods have been developed to fabricate such particles where wire explosion technique is one of them. In brief, wire explosion is realized by allowing a high power pulsed current to pass through a thin wire. The current will provide the energy to vaporize the wire due to the Joule heating effect. The formation of nanoparticles starts when the vaporized wire forms a supersaturated vapour that is followed by nucleation of …

Public Healthcare Facility Planning In Malaysia : Using Location Allocation Models / S. Sarifah Radiah Shariff, Shariff S. Sarifah Radiah

Student Works (2010-2019)

In many developing nations, the locations of public facilities are generally taken locally by government officers or by local elected leaders or by both. In Malaysia, the location of public health care are determined using some guidelines that were developed based on experience or some statistical information. There is still lack of formal analysis being carried out. As a result the decisions can very often be far from optimal. This study attempts to develop some mathematical location-allocation models for the locations of the public health care facilities in Malaysia. Two basic location allocation models with two different objectives are studied: …

Robust Inference In Panel Data Model / Nurul Sima Mohamad Shariff, Nurul Sima Mohamad Shariff Jan 2012

Robust Inference In Panel Data Model / Nurul Sima Mohamad Shariff, Nurul Sima Mohamad Shariff

Student Works (2010-2019)

Panel data is a group of many individual units observed for a specific time period. In general, researchers may tend to pool the units together where each observation is treated as independently among the others. Such restriction is invalid because most of the economic data are cross correlated between cross sectional units which may arise from a common influence which affects all units. This is known as cross sectional dependence (CD). The presence of outliers may result in rejection of null hypothesis, that is, in support of cross sectional independence. To overcome such problem, alternative methods which are insensitive to …

Algorithm Optimization And Low Cost Bit-Serial Architecture Design For Integer-Pixel And Sub-Pixel Motion Estimation In H.264/Avc / Mohammad Reza Hosseiny Fatemi, Mohammad Reza Hosseiny Fatemi

Student Works (2010-2019)

H.264/AVC employs variable block-size motion estimation (VBSME) with quarter-pixel accuracy, which significantly improves its coding performance. However, the higher coding performance comes at the price of huge computational complexity and memory bandwidth. Therefore, acceleration of the motion estimation (ME) in H.264/AVC with efficient algorithms and architectures is essential for real-time applications. This thesis is concerned with algorithm optimization and efficient low cost architecture design for integer motion estimation (IME) and sub-pixel motion estimation (SME) of H.264/AVC. Regarding the IME of H.264/AVC, we introduce two low cost bit-serial architectures, which are based on full search (FS) algorithm due to its regularity …

A Study Of Real Hypersurfaces In Complex Space Forms With Condition On The Jacobi Operator / Ren Shiquan, Shiquan Ren

Student Works (2010-2019)

In this thesis, we first review some basic concepts in Riemannian geometry and then give a detailed survey on real hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space form. After this, some new results on characterizing real hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space form in terms of R are presented. The main results are proved in the last two chapters. We give a characterization for ruled real hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space form by the condition (rXR) = 0, for X 2

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Of Methyl Chloride At The Chlorine K Edge, L. El Khoury, Loic Journel, Renaud Guillemin, Stephane Carniato, Wayne C. Stolte, T. Marin, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon Jan 2012

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Of Methyl Chloride At The Chlorine K Edge, L. El Khoury, Loic Journel, Renaud Guillemin, Stephane Carniato, Wayne C. Stolte, T. Marin, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of isolated CH3Cl molecules using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The high-resolution spectra allow extraction of information about nuclear dynamics in the core-excited molecule. Polarization-resolved RIXS spectra exhibit linear dichroism in the spin-orbit intensities, a result interpreted as due to chemical environment and singlet-triplet exchange in the molecular core levels. From analysis of the polarization-resolved data, Cl 2px, y and 2pz electronic populations can be determined.

Thomson-Resonant Interference Effects In Elastic X-Ray Scattering Near The Cl K Edge Of Hcl, Stephane Carniato, P. Selles, Loic Journel, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, L. El Khoury, T. Marin, Faris Gel'mukhanov, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We experimentally observed interference effects in elastic x-ray scattering from gas-phase HCl in the vicinity of the Cl K edge. Comparison to theory identifies these effects as interference effects between non-resonant elastic Thomson scattering and resonant Raman scattering. The results indicate the non-resonant Thomson and resonant Raman contributions are of comparable strength. The measurements also exhibit strong polarization dependence, allowing an easy identification of the resonant and non-resonant contributions.

Mobile Based Symptom Management For Palliative Care, Md Munirul Haque Jan 2012

Mobile Based Symptom Management For Palliative Care, Md Munirul Haque

Dissertations (1934 -)

The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of life of terminally ill patients through the management of pain and other symptoms. Though the term `palliative care' is well known in the developed world, it is relatively a new term in the developing world. According to WHO, each year 4.8 million people suffering from severe pain caused by cancer, fail to receive treatment due to lack of resources and other barriers.

In this thesis we have elaborated on the challenges faced by the rural breast cancer (BC) patients of Bangladesh and a solution for their palliative care treatment. …

Plant-Soil Feedbacks Provide An Alternative Explanation For Diversity-Productivity Relationships, Andrew Kulmatiski, Karen H. Beard, Justin Heavilin Jan 2012

Plant-Soil Feedbacks Provide An Alternative Explanation For Diversity-Productivity Relationships, Andrew Kulmatiski, Karen H. Beard, Justin Heavilin

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Plant–soil feedbacks (PSFs) have gained attention for their role in plant community dynamics, but their role in productivity has been overlooked. We developed and tested a biomass-specific, multi-species model to examine the role of PSFs in diversity–productivity relationships. The model predicts a negative relationship between PSFs and overyielding: plants with negative PSFs grow more in communities than in monoculture (i.e. overyield), and plants with positive PSFs grow less in communities than in monoculture (i.e. underyield). This effect is predicted to increase with diversity and saturate at low species richness because the proportion of ‘self-cultivated’ soils rapidly decreases as species are …

Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley Jan 2012

Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Many institutions of higher education have implemented local and global engagement opportunities as a way to expose both students and faculty to different cultures and further their knowledge of those cultures. One of the primary goals of these cultural experiences is for students and faculty to become more culturally competent. However, it is possible that our current way of thinking and promoting cultural competency within education specifically may not go deep enough and could be considered limiting in the ways we partner, collaborate, and interact with people groups different than ourselves. Cultural humility, a construct currently accepted in some professional …

Holocene Arroyo Cut And Fills Cycles, South-Central Washington, Matthew Ian Durkee Jan 2012

Holocene Arroyo Cut And Fills Cycles, South-Central Washington, Matthew Ian Durkee

All Master's Theses

Ephemeral streams have cut deeply incised arroyos into alluvial and eolian sediments in many of the watersheds within the Yakima Training Center (YTC) military reservation, south-central Washington. The most recent channel incision episode along Selah Creek is primarily attributed to multiple failures of an irrigation reservoir dam during the winters of 1909 and 1910. The modern arroyo exposed evidence of at least one previous episode of arroyo incision to a depth of ~4 m that occurred just prior to 1530- 1340 cal yr BP. Filling of this paleo-arroyo with fine to coarse grained sand ceased between 650-103 cal yr BP. …

Applying Gis Metrics To Determine Degree Of Glacial Modification In Mountainous Landscapes, Carl Delbert Swanson Ii Jan 2012

Applying Gis Metrics To Determine Degree Of Glacial Modification In Mountainous Landscapes, Carl Delbert Swanson Ii

All Master's Theses

The ability to quantitatively assess the degree of glaciation in mountainous areas can be a powerful tool in unraveling the evolution of landscapes, and provide key insights in regions where field research is difficult. Here we determine, test, and apply metrics that assess the relative degree of past glacial modification in mountainous landscapes. Results show that slope results can be used to quantitatively assess the degree to which an area is modified by glaciation. In particular, analysis of basins using slope frequency distribution curves and slope vs. elevation plots capture steeper slopes, flatter valley bottoms, cirques, and arêtes of glaciated …

Documenting The Origin Of Compositional Diversity Of Subduction Zone Magmatism, Alicudi, Aeolian Arc (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) Using In Situ Plagioclase Data, Rachel Hunt

All Master's Theses

Processes that generate magma compositional diversity are important to document because composition affects degree of explosivity, which impacts hazard mitigation. Magnesium to silicon rich magmas are produced by processes such as magma recharge, assimilation, and fractional crystallization (RAFC) that occur in subvolcanic magma chamber(s). This study evaluates how magma chamber processes contribute to compositional diversity at Alicudi Volcano, Italy. Analytical and petrographic data from ten samples that span the subaerial history include whole rock major and trace elements and strontium/neodymium isotopes, and plagioclase textural types, major and trace elements, and strontium isotopes; numerical modeling was also conducted. Integration of these …
