This paper attempts to answer questions regarding the link between engineering success and spatial skills through three themes. The previous research of the authors in examining the questions surrounding each theme is the focus of this paper; we acknowledge that others around the world may have conducted similar research, but the specific findings of the authors are the main focus of this paper. In the first theme, we examine data from several author-led studies where positive correlations have been found between spatial skill levels and proficiency in tasks that are a part of what it means to be an engineer. …
Fault Tolerant Adaptive Control Under Actuator Saturation For Robot Manipulators, D. J. López-Araujo, N. Alvarez-Jarquin, P. Borja, A. T. Becker
Fault Tolerant Adaptive Control Under Actuator Saturation For Robot Manipulators, D. J. López-Araujo, N. Alvarez-Jarquin, P. Borja, A. T. Becker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In practice, actuators inherently have natural limitations that are often overlooked by theoretical control strategies, such as bounded output and discrepancies between calculated and actual responses. Consequently, reliable control techniques must be employed to ensure safe and dependable operation. We propose an adaptive control law for global regulation in the case of partial loss of effectiveness due to input faults. The proposed control strategy maintains the system at the desired configuration while accounting for the physical limitations of the actuators. Additionally, it is suitable for dealing with unknown parameters in the vector of gravitational forces, making it robust to these …

Angle-Based Formation Stabilization And Maneuvers In Port-Hamiltonian Form With Bearing And Velocity Measurements, Ningbo Li, Pablo Borja, Arjan Van Der Schaft, Jacquelien M.A. Scherpen
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper proposes a port-Hamiltonian approach for angle-based formation stabilization and maneuvers using bearing and velocity measurements with an underlying triangulated Laman graph. The corresponding port-Hamiltonian controller is designed using virtual couplings on the errors of angle constraints in angle space. Then, the angle constraints and agent actuators are mapped by the constraint Jacobian, which can be applied to other formation constraints. In addition, to avoid unavailable distance terms in the control law, an estimator is designed based on port-Hamiltonian theory and the property that energy is coordinate-free for different sensor modalities using bearing and velocity measurements, which permits our …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
With technology increasingly embedded in everyday life, the demand for secure and usable authentication methods has never been greater. Traditional password-based systems continue to dominate, despite well-known usability and security challenges. This paper explores the evolution of user authentication technologies, from secret knowledge and tokens to biometrics and emerging approaches such as Passkeys. It critically evaluates the extent to which usability has been achieved, identifying both successes—such as biometrics integrated into smartphones—and persistent issues, including inconsistent guidance, ecosystem dependence, and accessibility barriers. Drawing on academic and commercial developments, the discussion highlights the growing burden on users who must authenticate across …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A consistent and reproducible chemical modification of the transducer interface is essential to ensure effectiveimmobilization of bioreceptors, thereby improving the sensitivity and reproducibility of biosensors. Althoughnotable progress has been made in fabricating graphene-based biosensors, the effects of surface biofunctionalization on sensing performance remain not fully understood. This study shows that combining threedimensional (3D) graphene foam electrodes with a straightforward, single-step surface biofunctionalizationmethod is key to enhancing the performance of graphene-based biosensors. Specifically, it presents a single-stepapproach to functionalize the 3D graphene foam (Gii-Sens) with 1-pyrenebutyric acid N-hydroxysuccinimideester (Pyrene-NHS ester). Electrochemical techniques, including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulsevoltammetry (DPV), confirmed …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmentalcondition characterized by atypical brain maturation. However, the adaptationof transfer learning paradigms in machine learning for ASD researchremains notably limited. In this study, we propose a computeraideddiagnostic framework with two modules. This chapter presents atwo-module framework combining deep learning and explainable AI forASD diagnosis. The first module leverages a deep learning model finetunedthrough cross-domain transfer learning for ASD classification. Thesecond module focuses on interpreting the model’s decisions and identifyingcritical brain regions. To achieve this, we employed three explainableAI (XAI) techniques: saliency mapping, Gradient-weighted Class ActivationMapping, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis. This framework demonstrates that …

OBJECTIVES: Peri-implantitis compromises soft and hard tissues around dental implants, often leading to implant failure. Antibacterial nanocoatings offer a promising infection control strategy, but maintaining biocompatibility is essential. This study investigated, through a range of assays and analytical techniques, the biocompatibility of antimicrobial silver and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocoatings applied to titanium implants with human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs).
METHODS: Silver and hydroxyapatite nanocoatings were applied to the surface of titanium alloy specimens using electroplating, deposition and sintering techniques. The biocompatibility of the nanocoatings with HGFs was assessed by measuring cell metabolic activity (alamarBlue), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, collagen production (Sircol assay), …
A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza
A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza
Doctoral
Measuring training efficiency for artificial neural networks is an open research problem, current literature reports several attempts to define measures or create reporting frameworks. Current methods lack generality as they require measurements of the hardware or software thus, comparing efficiency between different systems can be difficult. Similarly, current metrics or frameworks generally do not propose the use of the metrics to directly improve training efficiency. This thesis presents three main contributions: (1) a novel framework that quantifies the training efficiency of a neural architecture on a learning task as the average ratio of model accuracy to total energy consumption during …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs) are critical for enabling long-range underwater communication, supporting a wide range of applications, such as environmental monitoring, resource exploration, disaster prevention and marine security. Unfortunately, UANs operate within a limited acoustic spectrum, where these spectrums often overlap with those used by marine animals for communication, navigation and foraging. Additionally, anthropogenic noise from industrial activities contributes to acoustic pollution, intensifying this problem. This frequency overlap poses significant risks to marine life. Therefore, this review highlights the urgent need to develop environmentally aware UANs that minimize harmful acoustic interference with marine mammals, fish and invertebrates. Further, it focuses …

Praxis: The Missing Theory To Practice Link In Maximising Early Childhood Science Opportunities, Pauline Roberts, Patricia R. Collins
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Science teaching in early years contexts has been identified as deficient due to poor educator confidence, lack of content knowledge, or minimal opportunities being made available for science experiences. To identify strategies to counteract these factors, this study explored how these deficiencies are enacted in learning contexts by examining the beliefs and practices of educators across three early learning sites. The focus of this study was threefold: to gather the perception of educators in relation to early childhood science; explore the learning environments; and observe the interactions facilitated by the educators to develop scientific knowledge and skills for young children. …

Snif: Explainability-Driven Feature Selection Through State-Of-The-Art Shap–Nca Intersection Framework For Malware Detection, Sadia Nazim, Syed Shujaa Hussain, Bilal Yousuf, Jawahir Che Mustapha
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Modern malware detection rely on Deep neural networks to achieve high detection performance by leveraging a large feature space. However, these models often suffer from high dimensionality, limited interpretability, and reduced reliability due to redundant features. As a result, they obscure the true contribution of features to the rationale for the prediction. To address these challenges, this study proposes an explainability-aware feature pruning technique to improve the performance and efficiency of deep neural networks. The key focus of this study is the development of the novel SHAP–NCA Intersection Framework (SNIF), which integrates explainability with feature selection for efficient and trustworthy …

Purpose: SMEs are the backbone of the European economic model and represent 99.8% of all businesses, highlighting the importance of research that assesses challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs. The reviewed literature revealed a significant lack of research on how SMEs can develop management, teamwork, and team-building skills in the context of the twin transition (i.e., digital and green transitions), particularly regarding digital transformation and its impact on economic development and business cooperation. Researchers have presented evidence of the difficulties SMEs face in competing with corporations due to numerous constraints, including a lack of investment and qualified human resources. To …
Motivation System Evoked By High Performance Work System In Chinese Universities And Colleges - An Examination Of The Relationship Between Human Resource Practices, Basic Psychological Needs, And Job Performance, Juan Chen
Doctoral
High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) are strategic, integrated Human Resource Practices (HRPS) designed to enhance employee abilities, motivation, and opportunities for participation, driving sustained organisational performance. While early research emphasized commitment HRPS, recent studies recognise that control and commitment HRPS are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, with neither holding an absolute advantage. Their success depends on contextual factors such as country, industry, organisation, economic environment, and workforce. In Chinese higher education institutions, transitioning from a high-commitment “iron rice bowl” system to a more control-oriented HR model has created tensions between efficiency and academic freedom. Based on the resource-based view, social exchange …
Thermal Barrier Coatings And Their Impact On The Mechanical And Thermal Behaviour Of Fused Deposition Modelled Polymers In Harsh Environments, Simon Weait
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Coordinated deployment of thermally protected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)equipped for active firefighting operations around incidents such as the GrenfellTower fire could have provided substantial support to life-saving efforts. Incurrent practice, UAVs employed in comparable emergencies are largelyconfined to observational and surveillance roles, thereby substantiallyunderutilising their potential. Expanding their use to direct firefighting tasksrequires the integration of advanced thermal protection systems capable ofwithstanding significantly elevated temperatures associated with carbonaceousfire plumes. In particular, the development of a lightweight thermal barrier coatingthat adheres reliably to fused deposition modelled (FDM) polymers, such aspolylactic acid (GTP), is critical for operational viability and the minimisation ofthe …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This research explores application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods to better understand and improve customer service feedback in telecom industry. We collect novel reallife datasets of customer reviews and social media comments within British telecommunication industry over one year. Then, we apply three main modelling approaches. First, we study topic modelling for short text: we propose a new evaluation metric for GSDMM model and demonstrate that our metric helps to choose meaningful topics when texts are very brief. Second, we perform an extensive comparative study of word embedding models for text classification: we test nine word embedding and feature …
Investigating The Biocompatibility Of Nanosilver Hydroxyapatite Coatings With Human Gingival Fibroblasts To Enhance Abutment Integrity For Periodontal Health, Sian Morgan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Dental implants are susceptible to bacterial colonisation, which can initiate peri-implant inflammation and ultimately lead to peri-implantitis and implant failure. Antimicrobial surface modifications represent a promising strategy to mitigate bacterial infection however, such approaches must preserve biocompatibility with peri-implant soft tissue cells to ensure effective mucosal sealing and long-term implant success. In particular, human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) play a critical role in soft tissue integration at the implant-abutment interface, yet their interactions with antimicrobial silver-based coatings remain insufficiently understood. This thesis investigates the biocompatibility of nano silver-hydroxyapatite (Ag+nHA) coatings deposited on titanium substrates, with the aim of developing an antimicrobial …
Mapping The Uk Commercial Fishing Network: A Knowledge-Based Framework For Sustainable Technology Adoption And Environmental Decision-Making, Matthew Prowse
Mapping The Uk Commercial Fishing Network: A Knowledge-Based Framework For Sustainable Technology Adoption And Environmental Decision-Making, Matthew Prowse
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The UK commercial fishing industry operates within a complex web of stakeholders, technologies, and environmental pressures that challenge traditional approaches to sustainability and resource management. This research develops a comprehensive framework for understanding how technological advancement in UK fisheries creates unintended consequences that threaten long-term sustainability. Through a mixed-methods approach combining PESTLE analysis, grounded theory methodology, stakeholder mapping, case study investigation, this study introduces the "By-Product and Excess" theoretical framework to explain how fishing technologies generate two critical outcomes: by-products (undesirable environmental impacts such as CO₂ emissions, microplastics, and ecosystem damage) and excess (enhanced capacity to harvest beyond sustainable limits). The …

Coupled Thermo-Structural Analysis Of Steel Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Structural Members, Bin Zhang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis investigates the coupled thermal, flexural and steel–concrete bond response of steel-reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC) and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) beam cross-sections subjected to one-sided standard fire exposure. A sequential analytical framework is developed to link transient heat-transfer analysis, temperature-dependent sectional flexural analysis, and temperature-dependent bond and flexural–bond coupling assessment. The thermal analysis is performed using a one-dimensional transient heat-conduction model implemented in MATLAB PDEPE. Separate temperature-dependent density, specific-heat and thermal-conductivity relationships are adopted for OPCC and GPC. A dedicated OPCC model of the B1 validation specimen is assessed against 13 matched experimental reinforcement-temperature measurements, giving R^2=0.9542 and an …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Marine Composite Recreational Craft Manufacturing And Operations, Badr Moutik
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Marine composite recreational craft are growing in number. Sectoral roadmaps for sustainable development are increasing pressure to demonstrate life cycle environmental performance. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been identified as a key strategic decision support tool. However, current practice is undermined by sparse, non-representative data and methodological inconsistencies. These weaknesses increase the risk of biased or misleading interpretation, constrain wider uptake of LCA, and limit the sector’s ability to respond credibly to tightening environmental sustainability expectations. This thesis assesses the cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of a market-representative glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) motor yacht across 16 impact categories. The research builds on …
Modelling And Optimisation Of Dynamic Power Cable Configurations For Floating Offshore Renewable Energy, Anna Holcombe
Modelling And Optimisation Of Dynamic Power Cable Configurations For Floating Offshore Renewable Energy, Anna Holcombe
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Floating offshore renewable energy requires dynamic power cables to transmit generated electricity from the floating device to the seabed, or to an adjacent device, so that it can be exported to shore. Dynamic power cables are connected at the top end to a floating device, and traverse the water column, subjected to loading at the hang-off, and direct hydrodynamic loading from waves and currents. Their reliability has been a concern within industry and research, particularly due to historically high failure rates of static subsea cables. It is essential that design and analysis of dynamic power cables is accurate, to mitigate …

This systematic review synthesises global evidence from academic and grey literature published between 2015 and 2025, examining effective policies and interventions aimed at increasing ECCE participation across diverse country contexts, with a focus on equity dimensions such as gender, disability, socio-economic status and geographic location. The multifaceted nature of increasing ECCE participation is highlighted, exploring institutional, interventionist, preventative, and compensatory policies as per the GEM policy typology, while emphasising equity, quality, and contextual factors. These categories reflect the different levels and areas within which policies operate, noting that in practice, approaches to increase ECCE participation often are combined or overlap.
Sadqn-Based Residual Energy-Aware Beamforming For Lora-Enabled Rf Energy Harvesting For Disaster-Tolerant Underground Mining Networks, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria
Sadqn-Based Residual Energy-Aware Beamforming For Lora-Enabled Rf Energy Harvesting For Disaster-Tolerant Underground Mining Networks, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The end-to-end efficiency of radio-frequency (RF)-powered wireless communication networks (WPCNs) in post-disaster underground mine environments can be enhanced through adaptive beamforming. The primary challenges in such scenarios include (i) identifying the most energy-constrained nodes, i.e., nodes with the lowest residual energy to prevent the loss of tracking and localization functionality; (ii) avoiding reliance on the computationally intensive channel state information (CSI) acquisition process; and (iii) ensuring long-range RF wireless power transfer (LoRa-RFWPT). To address these issues, this paper introduces an adaptive and safety-aware deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for energy beamforming in LoRa-enabled underground disaster networks. Specifically, we develop a …
Code-Switching, Identity-Shifting, And Identity Distress Among Black Undergraduate Women Attending Predominantly White Institutions, Erin Smith
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Code-switching (altering language or speech) and identity-shifting (modifying appearance or behavior) are adaptive strategies often used by individuals from marginalized groups to navigate environments shaped by dominant cultural norms. Although these behaviors are commonly discussed in qualitative literature, relatively few quantitative studies have examined their psychological correlates among Black undergraduate women attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs). These behaviors may function as coping strategies in response to racialized and gendered expectations, yet the psychological implications of these strategies remain understudied. The present study examined the relationships among identity distress, code-switching, identity-shifting, and gendered racial identity centrality within a diverse sample of …
Toward Urban-Scale Liquefaction Hazard Analysis: Evaluation And Optimization Of Cpt-Based Lateral Displacement Assessment, Varun M. Singh
Toward Urban-Scale Liquefaction Hazard Analysis: Evaluation And Optimization Of Cpt-Based Lateral Displacement Assessment, Varun M. Singh
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading is a major type of earthquake-induced ground failure hazard and poses a significant threat to infrastructure systems. While semi-empirical methods, such as Lateral Displacement Index (LDI), have been developed to estimate lateral spreading displacement (LSD), their efficacy for regional-scale liquefaction hazard assessment remains unknown. This study evaluates and improves the LDI method for urban-scale seismic hazard assessments using a comprehensive dataset consisting of 1,713 Cone Penetration Test (CPT) case histories from the 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake, and high-resolution topographic data. Comparing the predicted LSDs and ground-truth observations from both field investigations and remote-sensing surveys reveals that …

The Reliability, Validity, And Sensitivity Of Physical Working Capacity At The Pain Intensity Threshold, Danielle A. Sterner
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness to training intervention of a pain-anchored capacity threshold, the Physical Working Capacity at the Pain Intensity Threshold (PWCPIT), as a practical submaximal marker of endurance-related exercise tolerance. Study one examined the test-retest reliability of pain-based, perceptual, and physiological physical working capacity measures in recreationally active men using a standardized multi-bout cycling protocol, with pain intensity responses demonstrating strong reproducibility and low measurement error, supporting the stability of pain-anchored thresholds when standardized procedures are applied. Study two evaluated the validity of PWCPIT by examining pain …
Thermomechanical Modeling Of Transpiration Surfaces For Hypersonic Propulsion, Spencer D. Smith
Thermomechanical Modeling Of Transpiration Surfaces For Hypersonic Propulsion, Spencer D. Smith
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Hypersonic flight vehicles are a promising form of high speed passenger transport and efficient space access architectures. However, they are fundamentally a thermally limited technology. High heat fluxes exceeding 10 MW/m2 and gas temperatures between 3000-4000K can be found both within the engine, and on the outer surface. Current conventional engineering materials are non-viable at these conditions. In order to make these materials viable, active cooling strategies could be utilized. One particularly promising type is transpiration cooling, where a coolant is diffused through a porous surface. Although researched heavily in the 1960s, adoption is still minimal. Part of the reason …
Abig4l: A Semantic Reasoning Engine For Verilog Via Abstract Interpretation, Alicia Thoney
Abig4l: A Semantic Reasoning Engine For Verilog Via Abstract Interpretation, Alicia Thoney
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Modern Electronic Design Automation (EDA) flows treat structural and semantic reasoning as separate concerns. Synthesis structurally optimizes RTL, while dedicated verification teams validate functional behavior through testbenches and formal methods. This organizational divide means designers have no automatic, sound way to understand what their RTL does at the moment they are writing it. This thesis introduces AbIG4L (Abstract Interpretation of Generic 4-valued Logic), a static analysis framework that bridges this gap by delivering sound semantic reasoning automatically, directly within the hardware design loop.
The framework operates on a language-agnostic intermediate representation to compute sound over-approximations of hardware behavior across 0, …
Oblique Detonation Waves In Internal Axisymmetric Converging Flow, Zachary P. White
Oblique Detonation Waves In Internal Axisymmetric Converging Flow, Zachary P. White
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Detonative combustion offers significant thermodynamic advantages for high‑speed propulsion, motivating the development of detonation‑based combustors for hypersonic flight. Among these, oblique detonation wave (ODW) engines require extremely high combustor velocities to achieve steady wave stabilization. While most prior experimental and numerical studies have focused on planar two‑dimensional geometries, axisymmetric combustors offer practical benefits for hypersonic vehicle integration and may influence achievable pressure gain. However, the effects of inward‑turning axisymmetric compression on ODW formation and performance remain largely unexplored. This work presents an experimentally stabilized ODW formed on an internal axisymmetric converging ramp. Experiments were conducted in a high‑enthalpy blowdown wind …

The aviation industry’s transition toward lower-carbon propulsion systems has accelerated interest in alternative fuels, including ammonia–hydrogen fuel blends. In this work, a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle is integrated with the exhaust stream of a turbofan engine to recover waste heat and utilize it for ammonia preheating and cracking. The recovered thermal energy raises the ammonia temperature to the level required for catalytic decomposition, enabling onboard hydrogen production. The proposed architecture combines ammonia cracking with a high-bypass, two-shaft turbofan engine representative of the propulsion system employed on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This approach addresses the challenges associated with onboard hydrogen …
