Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani Nov 2012

Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The electronic structures, many-body interactions and Fermi surface topologies of Au/Mo(112) were investigated in detail and were found to play important roles in the newly discovered order-disorder structural phase transition of the system. First, the high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was utilized to characterize the electronic band structure of Mo(112) in far greater details than before. This elucidated the existence of several surface-derived states and their dispersion relations in high precisions near the Fermi level, as well as the symmetries of the bulk and surface electronic states, which are in good quantitative agreement with the ab-initio calculations. Such thorough understanding of …

Power Distribution Network Reconfiguration For Bounded Transient Power Loss, Zhihao Li, Chenye Wu, Jiong Chen, Yiyu Shi, Jinjun Xiong, Amy Yuexuan Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We revisit the loss reduction problem for network reconfiguration in power distribution systems in this paper. Besides the conventional line power loss (LPL), in our model, we introduce a new concept - the transient power loss (TPL), which is mainly induced by the communication asynchronization and response delay. TPL is often overlooked in previous works because it's hard to measure in the conventional power networks. However, we can tackle this challenge in smart grid especially with the help of smart meter. in this paper, we propose a new heuristic greedy algorithm to achieve the minimal LPL with bounded TPL and …

Characterization Of Distributions Through Contraction And Dilation Of Dual Generalized Order Statistics, A. H. Khan Et Al Nov 2012

Characterization Of Distributions Through Contraction And Dilation Of Dual Generalized Order Statistics, A. H. Khan Et Al

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A general form of continuous distributions has been characterized by considering two conditional expectations of generalized order statistics (gos) conditioned on a non-adjacent gos. Further, some of its deductions are also discussed.

On Sarhan-Balakrishnan Bivariate Distribution, Debasis Kundu, Ammar Sarhan, Rameshwar D. Gupta Nov 2012

On Sarhan-Balakrishnan Bivariate Distribution, Debasis Kundu, Ammar Sarhan, Rameshwar D. Gupta

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Recently Sarhan and Balakrishnan (Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 98, 1508 - 1527, 2007) introduced a new singular bivariate distribution using generalized exponential and exponential distributions. They discussed several interesting properties of this new distribution. Sarhan-Balakrishnan did not discuss any estimation procedure of the unknown parameters. In Sarhan-Balakrishnan model, there is no scale parameter. Unfortunately without the presence of any scale parameter, it is difficult to use it for any data analysis purposes. We introduce a scale parameter in the model and it becomes a four-parameter bivariate model. The usual maximum likelihood calculation involves a four dimensional optimization problem. We discuss …

On The Calculation Of Price Sensitivities With A Jump-Diffusion Structure, Youssef El-Khatib, Abdulnasser Hatemi-J Nov 2012

On The Calculation Of Price Sensitivities With A Jump-Diffusion Structure, Youssef El-Khatib, Abdulnasser Hatemi-J

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

An integral part of successful risk management in modern financial markets is the accurate calculation of the price sensitivities of the underlying asset. There are a number of recent research papers that have focused on this important issue. A strand of literature has applied the finite difference method which is biased. Another strand of literature has made use of the Malliavin calculus within a jump diffusion framework. However, the existing papers have provided the price sensitivities by conditioning on some of the stochastic part of the complicated random process. The current paper provides price sensitivities in jump diffusion model without …

A Note On Test Of Homogeneity Against Umbrella Scale Alternative Based On U-Statistics, Anil Gaur Nov 2012

A Note On Test Of Homogeneity Against Umbrella Scale Alternative Based On U-Statistics, Anil Gaur

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A fundamental problem encountered in statistics is that of testing the equality of scale parameters against umbrella alternative with at least one strict inequality. In this article, a nonparametric test based on U-statistic by considering the subsample minima and maxima for several sample scale problem against umbrella alternative, when peak of the umbrella is known, is proposed. The proposed test have the advantage of not requiring the several distribution functions to have a common median, but rather any common quantile of order q, not necessarily ½) which is assumed to be known. Pitman efficiency indicate that the proposed test is …

Simplified Single Source Xml Model: For Student-Centered Educational Content Management, Tamara K. Taylor

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study investigates XML as a single source, recommending solutions and defining future needs for educators to manage student-centered educational content for diverse user preferences and multi-modal delivery. This research proposes a simplified XML single source model for educational course content management and XSL transformation of course material into multi-modal display/output that enables student-centered learning. The reviewed literature exposed four problem areas related to content management in which an XML single source might be a solution. Reviewed and synthesized literature related to XML into a cubed relationship with opposing the sides of the cube (content management/single source, corporate goals/educational goals …

Scalable Malware Clustering Through Coarse-Grained Behavior Modeling, Mahinthan Chandramohan, Hee Beng Kuan Tan, Lwin Khin Shar Nov 2012

Scalable Malware Clustering Through Coarse-Grained Behavior Modeling, Mahinthan Chandramohan, Hee Beng Kuan Tan, Lwin Khin Shar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anti-malware vendors receive several thousand new malware (malicious software) variants per day. Due to large volume of malware samples, it has become extremely important to group them based on their malicious characteristics. Grouping of malware variants that exhibit similar behavior helps to generate malware signatures more efficiently. Unfortunately, exponential growth of new malware variants and huge-dimensional feature space, as used in existing approaches, make the clustering task very challenging and difficult to scale. Furthermore, malware behavior modeling techniques proposed in the literature do not scale well, where malware feature space grows in proportion with the number of samples under examination. …

Second Life In The Classroom: Interacting With The Modern College Student, Stef Nicovich Nov 2012

Second Life In The Classroom: Interacting With The Modern College Student, Stef Nicovich

Atlantic Marketing Journal

How do we engage our students to actively learn? That is a question that educators are asking more and more often. New techniques and philosophies are constantly being developed and tried in the classroom yet we still come back to the same observations. Students are generally unprepared for college level studies and often seem unwilling to put in the required effort needed to succeed. Perhaps one reason students seem disengaged is because they may not see the value of what they are learning. The connections between their studies and how they will benefit them later in life may not be …

Hog: Distributed Hadoop Mapreduce On The Grid, Chen He, Derek J. Weitzel, David Swanson, Ying Lu

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

MapReduce is a powerful data processing platform for commercial and academic applications. In this paper, we build a novel Hadoop MapReduce framework executed on the Open Science Grid which spans multiple institutions across the United States – Hadoop On the Grid (HOG). It is different from previous MapReduce platforms that run on dedicated environments like clusters or clouds. HOG provides a free, elastic, and dynamic MapReduce environment on the opportunistic resources of the grid. In HOG, we improve Hadoop’s fault tolerance for wide area data analysis by mapping data centers across the U.S. to virtual racks and creating multi-institution failure …

Breaks In Thin And Thick Disks Of Edge-On Galaxies Imaged In The Spitzer Survey Of Stellar Structure In Galaxies (S4g), Sébastien Comerón, Trisha Mizusawa

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Breaks in the radial luminosity profiles of galaxies have until now been mostly studied averaged over disks. Here, we study separately breaks in thin and thick disks in 70 edge-on galaxies using imaging from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies. We built luminosity profiles of the thin and thick disks parallel to midplanes and we found that thin disks often truncate (77%). Thick disks truncate less often (31%), but when they do, their break radius is comparable with that in the thin disk. This suggests either two different truncation mechanisms—one of dynamical origin affecting both disks simultaneously and …

Influence Of Line Tension On Spherical Colloidal Particles At Liquid-Vapor Interfaces, Sean P. Mcbride, Bruce M. Law Nov 2012

Influence Of Line Tension On Spherical Colloidal Particles At Liquid-Vapor Interfaces, Sean P. Mcbride, Bruce M. Law

Physics Faculty Research

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging of isolated submicron dodecyltrichlorosilane coated silica spheres, immobilized at the liquid polystyrene- (PS-) air interface at the PS glass transition temperature, Tg , allows for determination of the contact angle θ versus particle radius R . At Tg , all θ versus R measurements are well described by the modified Young’s equation for a line tension τ=0.93  nN . The AFM measurements are also consistent with a minimum contact angle θmin and minimum radius Rmin , below which single isolated silica spheres cannot exist at the PS-air interface.

The saturation of mobile phone markets has resulted in rising costs for operators to obtain new customers. These operators thus focus their energies on identifying users that will churn so they can be targeted for retention campaigns. Typical churn prediction algorithms identify churners based on service usage metrics, network performance indicators, and demographic information. Social and peer-influence to churn, however, is usually not considered. In this paper, we describe a new churn prediction algorithm that incorporates the influence churners spread to their social peers. Using data from a major service provider, we show that social influence improves churn prediction and …

Flexural Rigidity Measurements Of Biopolymers Using Gliding Assays, Douglas S. Martin, Lu Yu, Brian L. Van Hoozen Jr.

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Microtubules are cytoskeletal polymers which play a role in cell division, cell mechanics, and intracellular transport. Each of these functions requires microtubules that are stiff and straight enough to span a significant fraction of the cell diameter. As a result, the microtubule persistence length, a measure of stiffness, has been actively studied for the past two decades. Nonetheless, open questions remain: short microtubules are 10-50 times less stiff than long microtubules, and even long microtubules have measured persistence lengths which vary by an order of magnitude.

Here, we present a method to measure microtubule persistence length. The method is based …

Microbial Effects On The Production And Transformation Of Surfactants Within The Microlayer And Subsurface Waters In Application To Remote Sensing Techniques, Katie E. Vella Nov 2012

Microbial Effects On The Production And Transformation Of Surfactants Within The Microlayer And Subsurface Waters In Application To Remote Sensing Techniques, Katie E. Vella

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The sea surface microlayer is a millimeter-scale interfacial layer between the atmosphere and the ocean. A number of studies have suggested that there is a unique ecosystem for marine bacteria in the sea surface microlayer, but little information exists on the microbial community composition of this ecosystem due to sampling complexities. In this work, we present an improved method to sample and compare the bacterial diversity of the sea surface microlayer with that of subsurface water at the same site. Bacterial samples were collected from the sea surface microlayer with a sampling method, which minimized sample contamination from the research …

Action Disambiguation Analysis Using Normalized Google-Like Distance Correlogram, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu Nov 2012

Action Disambiguation Analysis Using Normalized Google-Like Distance Correlogram, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Classifying realistic human actions in video remains challenging for existing intro-variability and inter-ambiguity in action classes. Recently, Spatial-Temporal Interest Point (STIP) based local features have shown great promise in complex action analysis. However, these methods have the limitation that they typically focus on Bag-of-Words (BoW) algorithm, which can hardly discriminate actions’ ambiguity due to ignoring of spatial-temporal occurrence relations of visual words. In this paper, we propose a new model to capture this contextual relationship in terms of pairwise features’ co-occurrence. Normalized Google-Like Distance (NGLD) is proposed to numerically measuring this co-occurrence, due to its effectiveness in semantic correlation analysis. …

Analytical Modeling, Performance Analysis, And Optimization Of Polarimetric Imaging System, Lingfei Meng Nov 2012

Analytical Modeling, Performance Analysis, And Optimization Of Polarimetric Imaging System, Lingfei Meng

Theses

Polarized light can provide additional information about a scene that cannot be obtained directly from intensity or spectral images. Rather than treating the optical field as scalar, polarization images seek to obtain the vector nature of the optical field from the scene. Polarimetry thus has been found to be useful in several applications, including material classification and target detection. Recently, optical polarization has been identified as an emerging technique and has shown promising applications in passive remote sensing. Compared with the traditional spectral content of the scene, polarimetric signatures are much more dependent on the scene geometry and the polarimetric …

A Comparison Of Literature-Based And Content-Based Guided Reading Materials On Elementary Student Reading And Science Achievement, Christine Guns Nov 2012

A Comparison Of Literature-Based And Content-Based Guided Reading Materials On Elementary Student Reading And Science Achievement, Christine Guns

Theses and Dissertations

Guided reading, as developed by Fountas and Pinnell (2001), has been a staple of elementary reading programs for the past decade. Teachers in the elementary school setting utilize this small group, tailored instruction in order to differentiate and meet the instructional needs of the students. The literature shows academic benefit for students who have special needs, such as learning disabilities, autism, and hearing impairments but consideration of academic impact has not been investigated for regular education students. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the academic impact of the use of content-related (Group C) and the traditional literature-based …
