Recent Results In Protein Kinase Inhibition For Tropical Diseases, David Rotella Nov 2012

Recent Results In Protein Kinase Inhibition For Tropical Diseases, David Rotella

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Protein kinases are becoming widely investigated targets for treatment of protozoal parasitic tropical diseases such as malaria and leishmaniasis. The search for potent, selective inhibitors of these parasitic enzymes has been aided by the extensive variety of structures prepared for human diseases. Genomic approaches to target identification and validation have aided the search. Substantial progress has been made and research is continuing to expand in an effort to find safe, effective drug candidates for these difficult to treat and widespread diseases.

Bayesian Test Analytics For Document Collections, Daniel David Walker Nov 2012

Bayesian Test Analytics For Document Collections, Daniel David Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Modern document collections are too large to annotate and curate manually. As increasingly large amounts of data become available, historians, librarians and other scholars increasingly need to rely on automated systems to efficiently and accurately analyze the contents of their collections and to find new and interesting patterns therein. Modern techniques in Bayesian text analytics are becoming wide spread and have the potential to revolutionize the way that research is conducted. Much work has been done in the document modeling community towards this end, though most of it is focused on modern, relatively clean text data. We present research for improved …

Two-Component Structure Of The HΒ Broad-Line Region In Quasars. I. Evidence From Spectral Principal Component Analysis, Chen Hu, Jian-Min Wang, Luis C. Ho, Gary J. Ferland, Jack A. Baldwin, Ye Wang

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on a spectral principal component analysis (SPCA) of a sample of 816 quasars, selected to have small Fe II velocity shifts with spectral coverage in the rest wavelength range 3500-5500 Å. The sample is explicitly designed to mitigate spurious effects on SPCA induced by Fe II velocity shifts. We improve the algorithm of SPCA in the literature and introduce a new quantity, the fractional-contribution spectrum, that effectively identifies the emission features encoded in each eigenspectrum. The first eigenspectrum clearly records the power-law continuum and very broad Balmer emission lines. Narrow emission lines dominate the second eigenspectrum. The …

Dark Solitons Of The Qiao's Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons

Articles

We obtain a class of soliton solutions of the integrable hierarchy which has been put forward in a series of works by Z. Qiao. The soliton solutions are in the class of real functions approaching constant value fast enough at infinity, the so-called 'dark solitons'.

Improve The Performance And Scalability Of Raid-6 Systems Using Erasure Codes, Chentao Wu Nov 2012

Improve The Performance And Scalability Of Raid-6 Systems Using Erasure Codes, Chentao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

RAID-6 is widely used to tolerate concurrent failures of any two disks to provide a higher level of reliability with the support of erasure codes. Among many implementations, one class of codes called Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes aims to offer data protection against disk failures with optimal storage efficiency. Typical MDS codes contain horizontal and vertical codes. However, because of the limitation of horizontal parity or diagonal/anti-diagonal parities used in MDS codes, existing RAID-6 systems suffer several important problems on performance and scalability, such as low write performance, unbalanced I/O, and high migration cost in the scaling process. To …

Inventory And Initiation Zone Characterization Of Debris Flows On Mount St. Helens, Washington Initiated During A Major Storm Event In November, 2006, Keith Vinton Olson

Dissertations and Theses

The heavy precipitation event of November 3-8, 2006 dropped over 60 cm of rain onto the bare southern slopes of Mount St. Helens and generated debris flows in eight of the sixteen drainages outside the 1980 debris avalanche zone. Debris flows occurred on the upper catchments of the Muddy River, Shoestring Glacier, Pine Creek, June Lake, Butte Camp Dome, Blue Lake, Sheep Creek, and South Fork Toutle River. Debris flows were clustered on the west and south-east sides of the mountain. Of the eight debris flows, three were initiated by landslides, while five were initiated by headward or channel erosion. …

Sex Differences In Normal Fetuses And Infants: A Commentary, David S. Moore Nov 2012

Sex Differences In Normal Fetuses And Infants: A Commentary, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Sex differences in infants warrant attention, not because they clarify the extent to which such differences reflect nature or nurture, but because studying them is likely to illuminate the origins of sex differences later in life and thereby yield manipulations that could influence the development of important competences. It is not yet clear how male and female infants come to differ. Testosterone is influential, but because of the complexity of the developmental systems in which it operates, its effects are not straightforward: Testosterone does different things in different contexts. Simple explanations invoking hormone exposure should not be expected to satisfactorily …

Spectral Clustering: An Empirical Study Of Approximation Algorithms And Its Application To The Attrition Problem, B. Cung, T Jin, J. Ramirez, A. Thompson, C. Boutsidis, Deanna Needell Nov 2012

Spectral Clustering: An Empirical Study Of Approximation Algorithms And Its Application To The Attrition Problem, B. Cung, T Jin, J. Ramirez, A. Thompson, C. Boutsidis, Deanna Needell

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Clustering is the problem of separating a set of objects into groups (called clusters) so that objects within the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in different clusters. Spectral clustering is a now well-known method for clustering which utilizes the spectrum of the data similarity matrix to perform this separation. Since the method relies on solving an eigenvector problem, it is computationally expensive for large datasets. To overcome this constraint, approximation methods have been developed which aim to reduce running time while maintaining accurate classification. In this article, we summarize and experimentally evaluate several approximation …

The History And Impact Of A College‐Level Field‐Based Course On Learner And Community Development, David M. Harwood, Leilani Arthurs

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Providing students with inquiry‐based learning experiences was a key recommendation made in the National Academies' 2007 report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, and this presentation is about a model for providing such experiences to college‐level students through a field‐based geology course. GEOL 160 – Fundamentals of Geosciences in the Field was developed 10 years ago for undergraduate students preparing to be K‐12 science teachers. The goals of the course are to enhance undergraduate pre‐service science teachers’ (i) knowledge of geoscience and the nature of science, (ii) attitudes about science, and (iii) …

American Ways: A Course In Contemporary U.S. Culture For International Students, Christopher D. Fitch

Capstone Collection

International student populations are increasing in large proportions at universities across the United States. The onset of culture shock and difficulty communicating and relating with their new peers compounds an already difficult situation. Universities and colleges need a method to accommodate these students and help facilitate their transitions into a completely new academic and social environment.

“American Ways: A course on Contemporary American Culture for International Students” is a semester-long university level course designed to give knowledge and understanding of “American” culture to international students attending U.S. higher education institutions. It will cover topics surrounding U.S. culture that …
