Artl@S: A Spatial And Trans-National Art History Origins And Positions Of A Research Program, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
ARTL@S is a project on the spatial and trans-national history of the arts and humanities, based on the collaboration of quantitative methods and cartographic visualization. These two strategies fit into a perspective nourished by critical and sociological theory that, in short, aims to highlight not only the link between a work of art and its space, but also its underlying political, social, aesthetic or economic issues. From this standpoint, we have chosen to take advantage of what a digi-tal approach can offer: the constitution of da-tabases, quantitative analysis, graphic and geographic representations of data, as well as the Internet. Electrophysiological Potentials Reveal Cortical Mechanisms For Mental Imagery, Mental Simulation, And Grounded (Embodied) Cognition, Haline E. Schendan, Giorgio Ganis
School of Psychology
Grounded cognition theory proposes that cognition, including meaning, is grounded in sensorimotor processing. The mechanism for grounding cognition is mental simulation, which is a type of mental imagery that re-enacts modal processing. To reveal top-down, cortical mechanisms for mental simulation of shape, event-related potentials were recorded to face and object pictures preceded by mental imagery. Mental imagery of the identical face or object picture (congruous condition) facilitated not only categorical perception (VPP/N170) but also later visual knowledge [N3(00) complex] and linguistic knowledge (N400) for faces more than objects, and strategic semantic analysis (late positive complex) between 200 and 700 ms. …

In-Text And Out-Of-Text Engagement: Interactional Features In Students' Academic Writing And Academic Engagement, Florette Press
In-Text And Out-Of-Text Engagement: Interactional Features In Students' Academic Writing And Academic Engagement, Florette Press
Theses and Dissertations
While student engagement theory recognizes writing as an engaging activity, there have been few studies that explore the levels of engagement within college students' academic writing. Analyses of in-text interactions between writers and their imagined reader(s) can uncover writers' attitudes about themselves as writers and as participants in the academic community. This study looked specifically at students' in-text interaction in the context of overall student engagement. Making a connection between interactional features in writing and overall student engagement provided a new perspective by which professors and administrators can evaluate students' academic integration. This study combined text analysis and interviews with …

Faith-Based Views Of Barriers To Recognition And Treatment Of Depression, Keneshia J. Bryant
Faith-Based Views Of Barriers To Recognition And Treatment Of Depression, Keneshia J. Bryant
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Studies have shown that spirituality and religion are important to the treatment of depression among African Americans. Spirituality has also been shown to impact the beliefs of the causes of depression and coping mechanisms. The aim of the study was to describe how predominantly African American rural churches distinguish effective means to recognize and cope with depressive symptoms.
Methods: The study followed the principles of Community Based Participatory Research. The participants were recruited by a community leader in a rural US community. The participants included a group of pastors, a group of persons interested in health and a group …

Methods: Morgan and Kreuger's (1988) steps for focus group data collection and analysis were followed rigorously to insure the accuracy and the credibility of the study findings. An inquiry guide was developed by the Principal Investigator and was critiqued by a consultant with expertise in the field. A select group of professionals and community leaders with expertise in domestic violence were identified and recruited …

Working Collaboratively To Facilitate The Acquisition Of Culturally Relevant And Competent Communication Skills In Esl Nursing Students For Clinical Practice, Paul J. Glew, Lyn E. Stewart, Barbara L. Beale, Sharon Patricia Hillege
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: This paper explores clinical communication interventions for undergraduate nursing students with English as a second language (ESL) within a multicampus program at the University of Western Sydney. Students are expected to communicate effectively with patients, nurses, and other health care professionals. Limited oral communication skills in English can cause anxiety for ESL nursing students and this can negatively impact on learning in a clinical setting. In addition, students may experience difficulties in using nursing terminology and appropriate expressions for interactions in this setting. The development of communication skills that are adequate for clinical practice can take intensive instruction and …

The Effectiveness Of Total Physical Response Storytelling For Language Learning With Special Education Students, Laura Holleny
The Effectiveness Of Total Physical Response Storytelling For Language Learning With Special Education Students, Laura Holleny
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory research was to ascertain the validity of the Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) language learning method in comparison with "traditional" language learning methods. The research focused on high school students (n= 44) in grades 9-12 with mild learning disabilities such as specific learning disorder, other health impairment, communication impairment, and multiple disabilities. Students varied greatly with the successes of both language learning methods. There were four classes that participated in the study and half of the classes performed better on assessments when taught through TPRS techniques. The other classes achieved higher scores when "traditional" language …
The Correlation Between Spectral Moment Measures And Electropalatometric Contact Patterns For /T/ And /K/, Janelle Barrett
The Correlation Between Spectral Moment Measures And Electropalatometric Contact Patterns For /T/ And /K/, Janelle Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
Spectral moment analysis has helped further our understanding of the spectral properties of obstruent speech production; however, the physiologic correlates of these spectral measures are not well understood. The aim of the present study was to examine the possible correlations between the linguapalatal contact patterns used to produce the stops /t/ and /k/ and the resulting spectral characteristics. Using spectral moment analysis and electropalatography, the real-word productions of eight speakers of American English were investigated. The spectral measures for the stop consonant tokens in the present study were found to be similar to data reported in previous research with adult …

Through A Feminist Lens: Language, Power And Identity In Catalan Nationalism, Christine Gallagher Kearney
Through A Feminist Lens: Language, Power And Identity In Catalan Nationalism, Christine Gallagher Kearney
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
The goal for my master’s thesis is to understand how the working class women of Catalunya (specifically women that lived in the small farming villages in the region of Les Garrigues),contributed to the survival of Catalan. Catalunya is an autonomous region of Spain that endured more than three decades of the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1934-1975) that attempted to eradicate the Catalan language and culture. As stated by Everly (2003): “[…] the regional exile of Catalunya from the rest of Spain acts as a backdrop provoking women to go a step further and experiment with their own sense of gender separation …

Memories Of Us Imperialism Narratives Of The Homeland In Filipino And Puerto Rican Homes In The United States, Faye C. Caronan
Memories Of Us Imperialism Narratives Of The Homeland In Filipino And Puerto Rican Homes In The United States, Faye C. Caronan
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines how institutionalized histories of the US as a benevolent colonial power are reproduced in Filipino and Puerto Rican homes in the United States, facilitated by parents’ adherence to these histories. However, US imperialism is justified differently: in the Philippines, through a narrative of rescue from Spain and the brutality of Japan as well as the gifts of democratic institutions; in Puerto Rico, through a narrative of cultural nationalism that foregrounds cultural independence and displaces the question of political independence. The performance poets in this study developed alternative histories and their associated artistic expressions in college rather than at …
