Cataloging Digital Images, Vicki Sipe

OLAC Conferences

Many of our image collections live in the non-MARC world. Recognizing that fact, this workshop will discuss tools and standards that are available to guide decisions about record creation for digital images in MARC and non-MARC environments. A major focus will be on the methods and considerations in image analysis as a means to uncover information about an image that would be useful in all record environments. We will look at MARC and non-MARC records, and will include records created using AACR2 and RDA.

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep Oct 2012

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

This paper synthesizes and categorizes important social justice scholarship into a useable taxonomy that social justice workers can use in their personal and professional spheres of influence. The present paper discusses the idea that although social justice activities and/or projects may originate with noteworthy missions and motivations, unless their creators are vigilant, service projects have the potential to deteriorate into myth-making initiatives that reinforce the problems that they originally intended to ameliorate.

Interpretation And Construction In Altering Rules, Gregory Klass Oct 2012

Interpretation And Construction In Altering Rules, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay is a response to Ian Ayres's, "Regulating Opt-Out: An Economic Theory of Altering Rules," 121 Yale L.J. 2032 (2012). Ayres identifies an important question: How does the law decide when parties have opted-out of a contractual default? Unfortunately, his article tells only half of the story about such altering rules. Ayres cares about rules designed to instruct parties on how to get the terms that they want. By focusing on such rules he ignores altering rules designed instead to interpret the nonlegal meaning of the parties' acts or agreement. This limited vision is characteristic of economic approaches to …

“Phone Home”: Remote Parenting Across National Borders – Jamaican Students In North America And The Role Of Mobile Communication Devices, Marian Stewart Titus Oct 2012

“Phone Home”: Remote Parenting Across National Borders – Jamaican Students In North America And The Role Of Mobile Communication Devices, Marian Stewart Titus

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This study presents a snapshot of geographically distributed families and how they use information and communication technologies (ICTs). The setting is in the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, and by way of qualitative interviews with eleven parents, the study explores the extent to which Jamaican parents communicate with their adolescents overseas using ICTs. Despite the barriers of distance, the parents were able to maintain strong emotional bonds with their adolescents overseas, and used mobile phones and voice over Internet protocols to enact a virtual co-presence with their children, as well as to maintain existing, and create new family rituals. The study …

Multicultural Cities, Communication And Transportation Improvements. An Empirical Analysis For Italy, Cristina Cattaneo Oct 2012

Multicultural Cities, Communication And Transportation Improvements. An Empirical Analysis For Italy, Cristina Cattaneo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper investigates the determinants of cosmopolitan cities. The hypothesis tested empirically is whether gradual improvements in distant communication boost the generation of ethnically heterogeneous cities. Consequently to easier communication, movers increasingly rely on an enlarged community for identity transmission, rather than on localized peer effects of segregated environment. The empirical estimation provides support to the prediction of the model. A better access to the airports as well as improvements in internet communications are found to increase city ethnic diversity.

Brief Of Benjamin N. Cardozo School Of Law Tax Clinic As Amicus Curiae In Support Of The Respondents, Carlton M. Smith Oct 2012

Brief Of Benjamin N. Cardozo School Of Law Tax Clinic As Amicus Curiae In Support Of The Respondents, Carlton M. Smith

Amicus Briefs

The Cardozo Tax Clinic represents, for free, low-income taxpayers with respect to their federal income tax matters – both before the Internal Revenue Service and in the federal courts. Occasionally, the Clinic’s assistance has been sought after those individuals, on their own, filed a document late – either with the IRS or the courts -- under a time deadline set out in the Internal Revenue Code or in a regulation promulgated thereunder. Usually, no extraordinary equitable reasons occurred that might excuse such late filing. See, e.g., Iljazi v. Commissioner, T.C. Summary Op. 2010-59 (client simply filed administrative claim for …

Possible Steps Of Complete Disassembly Of Post-Termination Complex By Yeast Eef3 Deduced From Inhibition By Translocation Inhibitors., Shinya Kurata, Ben Shen, Jun O Liu, Nono Takeuchi, Akira Kaji, Hideko Kaji

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Ribosomes, after one round of translation, must be recycled so that the next round of translation can occur. Complete disassembly of post-termination ribosomal complex (PoTC) in yeast for the recycling consists of three reactions: release of tRNA, release of mRNA and splitting of ribosomes, catalyzed by eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3) and ATP. Here, we show that translocation inhibitors cycloheximide and lactimidomycin inhibited all three reactions. Cycloheximide is a non-competitive inhibitor of both eEF3 and ATP. The inhibition was observed regardless of the way PoTC was prepared with either release factors or puromycin. Paromomycin not only inhibited all three reactions …

The New Crowdfunding Registration Exemption: Good Idea, Bad Execution, Stuart R. Cohn Oct 2012

The New Crowdfunding Registration Exemption: Good Idea, Bad Execution, Stuart R. Cohn

Florida Law Review

Title III of the JOBS Act, signed by President Obama on April 5, 2012, sets forth a new exemption from federal and state securities registration for so-called “crowdfunding” promotions. Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular form of raising capital through broad-based internet solicitation of donors. Many promotions simply seek charitable or other donations. But the lure of raising funds through the internet has also led to promotions for potentially profitable ventures that offer an economic return to donors. These efforts invoke the federal and state securities laws, as there are no de minimis standards protecting even the smallest of offerings. Registration …

Triangulating Judicial Responsiveness: Automated Content Analysis, Judicial Opinions, And The Methodology Of Legal Scholarship, Chad M. Oldfather, Joseph P. Bockhorst, Brian P. Dimmer Oct 2012

Triangulating Judicial Responsiveness: Automated Content Analysis, Judicial Opinions, And The Methodology Of Legal Scholarship, Chad M. Oldfather, Joseph P. Bockhorst, Brian P. Dimmer

Florida Law Review

The increasing availability of digital versions of court documents, coupled with increases in the power and sophistication of computational methods of textual analysis, promises to enable both the creation of new avenues of scholarly inquiry and the refinement of old ones. This Article advances that project in three respects. First, it examines the potential for automated content analysis to mitigate one of the methodological problems that afflicts both content analysis and traditional legal scholarship—their acceptance on faith of the proposition that judicial opinions accurately report information about the cases they resolve and courts‘ decisional processes. Because automated methods can quickly …

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander Oct 2012

Insight Problem Solving: A Critical Examination Of The Possibility Of Formal Theory, William H. Batchelder, Gregory E. Alexander

The Journal of Problem Solving

This paper provides a critical examination of the current state and future possibility of formal cognitive theory for insight problem solving and its associated “aha!” experience. Insight problems are contrasted with move problems, which have been formally defined and studied extensively by cognitive psychologists since the pioneering work of Alan Newell and Herbert Simon. To facilitate our discussion, a number of classical brainteasers are presented along with their solutions and some conclusions derived from observing the behavior of many students trying to solve them. Some of these problems are interesting in their own right, and many of them have not …

Effective Keyword Selection Requires A Mastery Of Storage Technology And The Law, Daniel B. Garrie Oct 2012

Effective Keyword Selection Requires A Mastery Of Storage Technology And The Law, Daniel B. Garrie

Pace Law Review

Selecting keywords for searching large volumes of electronically stored information (“ESI”) is an unavoidable, but necessary step in the process of electronic discovery. The parties to a case, or the court, may choose the terms for the search. However, an efficient alternative to both options involves a mediator, neutral, or special master with a thorough understanding of the legal elements of the case and the technology systems that will be subject to keyword search. This alternative can benefit both parties, as well as the court, because a “technology-aware” mediator can expedite an agreement that allows both parties to maintain oversight …

Social Construction Of False Necessities And The Material Basis Of Socio-Legal Power: A Reply To Irrationalism In Critical Legal Studies Critiques Identifying Latent Social Violence As A Potential New Material Foundation For Systematic Socio-Legal Theory, Samantha Godwin Oct 2012

Social Construction Of False Necessities And The Material Basis Of Socio-Legal Power: A Reply To Irrationalism In Critical Legal Studies Critiques Identifying Latent Social Violence As A Potential New Material Foundation For Systematic Socio-Legal Theory, Samantha Godwin

Pace Law Review

This Article is deliberately unconventional and exploratory. It begins by raising many conceptually problematic questions which cannot be answered simply or definitively. The point is not to provide any one right answer for these questions but to raise possible directions for new lines of inquiry rather than accepting the theoretical dead end that is irrationalism. I do not necessarily hope to offer a new systemizing theory that can withstand rigorous critique, but rather to show that such attempts remain possible and worthwhile even after the influence of post-modernism and the deconstruction of the most significant social theories.

May 68 And French Literary Production: A Periodization Of Modern Revolutionary Writing In The Works Of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, And Jean Genet, Arthur F. Tang Oct 2012

May 68 And French Literary Production: A Periodization Of Modern Revolutionary Writing In The Works Of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, And Jean Genet, Arthur F. Tang

Open Access Dissertations

This study proposes a renewed consideration of May 68 French literary production through a periodization of Modern Revolutionary Writing. The doxa advanced by the critical literature suggests the revolutionary dimensions of May 68 failed to impact substantively on cultural production in France. In the writings of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, and Jean Genet, a different conclusion is reached through textual analyses of structural synchronicity and ad rem narrative interactions with the historic marker. Rethinking and critically revisiting several interpretations of the relation between France’s May 68 “revolution” and literary and cultural production, the texts at stake are read as poetical …

Misappropriating Women’S History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion , Tracy A. Thomas Oct 2012

Misappropriating Women’S History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion , Tracy A. Thomas

Seattle University Law Review

To examine the veracity of the political and legal claims of a feminist history against abortion, this Article focuses on one of the leading icons used in antiabortion advocacy—Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton has, quite literally, been the poster child for FFL’s historical campaign against abortion, appearing on posters, flyers, and commemorative coffee mugs. Advocates claim that Stanton is a particularly fitting spokesperson because she was a “feisty gal who had seven children and was outspokenly pro-life.” They claim that she “condemned abortion in the strongest possible terms” and was “a revolutionary who consistently advocated for the rights of women, for …
