Manual annotation of large textual corpora can be cost-prohibitive, especially for rare and under-resourced languages. One potential solution is pre-annotation: asking human annotators to correct sentences that have already been annotated, usually by a machine. Another potential solution is correction propagation: using annotator corrections to dynamically improve to the remaining pre-annotations within the current sentence. The research presented in this paper employs a controlled user study to discover under what conditions these two machine-assisted annotation techniques are effective in increasing annotator speed and accuracy and thereby reducing the cost for the task of morphologically annotating texts written in classical Syriac. …
Oil Wells And Well-Oiled Guns: The Resource Curse And Government-Directed Violence During The Arab Spring Uprisings, Vihara Anjalee Dharmaratne
Oil Wells And Well-Oiled Guns: The Resource Curse And Government-Directed Violence During The Arab Spring Uprisings, Vihara Anjalee Dharmaratne
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes whether there is a positive correlation between the levels of government-directed violence and oil wealth, against the backdrop of the Arab Spring. Have governments of the Middle East and North African (MENA) states that possess more oil wealth used more violence on their protesting citizens than governments of states that have little or no oil wealth? Does the so-called “resource curse” apply to the outcomes of the Arab Spring? This thesis attempted to answer these questions by (1) studying the levels of government-directed violence in the Arab Spring uprisings and (2) examining the oil wealth and oil …

Sã Se Puede... ¿Leer?: Assessing The Success Of The Cuban And Nicaraguan Literacy Initiatives, Camille Lyn Lesseig
Honors Theses
This research examines the literacy programs conducted in 1961 Cuba and 1980 Nicaragua. Given the similarities in the structure and implementation of the plan as well as the congruencies in rhetoric promoting the plans, this thesis explores the various internal and external variables that affected each country’s program to better understand the widely different results. To research these countries’ programs, I examined both primary and secondary source material related to each country, their educational programs specifically, as well as information about US foreign policy relationships with the countries during this time. Although both programs were initially successful in reducing illiteracy …

Ethnic Tourism’S Effect On Bai Ethnic Minority’S Identity In Dali, China, Tabitha Bandi
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the Bai minority group in the town of Dali, in China's Yunnan Province and examines the effect of ethnic tourism upon the identity ofthe Bai people. Through an analysis of governmental policies, both on the national and provincial level, economic policies, and different sources of Bai identity, such as travel magazines and articles, I have come to find that the Chinese state and Han Chinese have played a decisive role in the shaping and defining of Bai identity. Through the promotion of tourism and state policies, the Bai people have created a stronger sense ofidentity.

Mental Arithmetic Across Three Language Groups, Tianyu Luo
Mental Arithmetic Across Three Language Groups, Tianyu Luo
Master's Theses
Mental arithmetic performance was investigated among three language groups (English monolinguals, Chinese-English bilinguals, and Spanish-English bilinguals). Participants solved both small and large numerosity arithmetic problems in addition and multiplication and reported their solution strategies. All groups performed better in small problems than in large ones and better in addition than in multiplication, especially for a large size set. The results revealed all three groups performed equally well in solving problems correctly. Spanish-English bilinguals were equivalent to their English monolingual peers. However, Chinese-English bilinguals outperformed the other two groups in solution speed, especially when problems consisted of large numbers. No group …

Asahi Shimbun And The New York Times: Framing Pearl Harbor And The 9/11 Attacks, Maiko Kunii
Master's Theses
The researcher analyzed visual frames in the photo coverage in the New York Times and the Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shimbun, following the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 and the 9/11 attacks in 2001. In 1941-1942, although the humanization set of frames was the dominant frame in the New York Times, the set of military frames was dominant in Asahi Shimbun. The New York Times emphasized American civilians as well as the American and U.S. allied soldiers' involvement in the war. In contrast, photos in Asahi Shimbun portrayed the patriotism of the Japanese military and the international human dimension in Asia. …
Rhetoric Of Social Change In Documentary Film Scores: An Analysis Of The Cove, Brianna Chanel Hackley
Rhetoric Of Social Change In Documentary Film Scores: An Analysis Of The Cove, Brianna Chanel Hackley
Master's Theses
Documentary films tell the untold stories and tragedies of the world as well as reflect the filmmakers' ideologies. In this way, they are socially conscious media: they give light to the struggles and problems that exist in society, often giving voice to people who might otherwise be silenced. Documentary films are also rhetorically persuasive in that they help to organize public perception. Documentary scores are part of films' persuasiveness and help audiences to make sense of the documentary footage.
Using a form of rhetorical analysis, this thesis aims to study documentary scores to understand how they mobilize audiences around a …
The Role Of Language In Shaping The International Cultural Tourism Experience Of Student-Travelers, Avina Ramnani
The Role Of Language In Shaping The International Cultural Tourism Experience Of Student-Travelers, Avina Ramnani
Master's Theses
This qualitative, exploratory study sought insight into how language affects the cultural tourism experience in the international tourism context. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews of 13 student-travelers, who traveled with the San Jose State University's study-abroad programs. The analysis of the data was carried out within a socio-linguistic context using grounded theory methods. Findings indicated that travel motivations and the perception of significance of the language spoken at a destination were intimately connected. Further, the desire on the part of the student-travelers to experience the local culture affected the desire for interaction with the host population, which was in …
Effects Of A Virtually Abroad Program On Students' Cross-Cultural Competence, Emalynn Lucie Robinson
Effects Of A Virtually Abroad Program On Students' Cross-Cultural Competence, Emalynn Lucie Robinson
Master's Theses
A program-long, longitudinal, self-report study was conducted to assess the benefits and effects of student engagement in a five-week virtual team project, called the Virtually Abroad Program (VAP). The VAP required two or three students from each country to work together as a team on a course project. Students completed questionnaires at the start (Time 1) and end (Time 2) of the project. Study variables included culture-general knowledge, culture-specific knowledge, openness to new cultural experiences, and overall program evaluation. From Time 1 to Time 2, both types of knowledge increased significantly for the U.S. sample but not for the sample …
Coming From Sounds Of Blackness: Exploring The Effects Of Hip-Hop On Views Of Race, Eliezer Bercasio
Coming From Sounds Of Blackness: Exploring The Effects Of Hip-Hop On Views Of Race, Eliezer Bercasio
Master's Theses
Does the individual's frequency of listening to hip-hop music have an effect on whether or not they believe in a color-blind ideology? Using data from a 25-item questionnaire given to 165 participants drawn for a sample from an urban California college, this study tested six hypotheses in order to determine if such a connection exists. Results revealed that individuals who frequently listened to misogynistic rap were less likely to believe that race is a convenient way to categorize individuals, controlling for race, sex, and income. Thus, individuals who had a higher frequency of listening to hip-hop were less likely to …
Implementation Of A Guest Retention Process In The Louisville First Seventh-Day Adventist Church For Maximal Evangelism Effectiveness, Timothy E. Madding
Implementation Of A Guest Retention Process In The Louisville First Seventh-Day Adventist Church For Maximal Evangelism Effectiveness, Timothy E. Madding
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. The Louisville First Seventh-day Adventist Church attracts approximately 250 first-time guests through its doors each year. Of these approximately 5% are actually connecting to the church through membership. The local church has no organized, effective means of connecting these guests to the church and Christ, therefore great growth potential is being squandered. The intention of this project is to increase the evangelistic impact of Louisville First and other Seventh-day Adventist churches in metropolitan areas by increasing the number of first-time guests to membership ratio.
Method. A guest retention process was developed and implemented in 2010 at the Louisville First …

Problem. Seventh-day Adventist teenagers are familiar with church doctrines but many do not understand how these doctrines relate to a relationship with Jesus Christ and the student’s daily lives. This study was to determine the effectiveness of a narrative sermon series to help academy-aged students understand the centrality of Jesus Christ to Seventh-day Adventist doctrines and how these doctrines relate to daily living.
Method. This study included two researcher developed surveys and group interviews. The surveys gathered qualitative and quantitative data, which measured understanding of, and attitude towards, Seventh-day Adventist doctrines. Forty-four students from Parkview Adventist Academy in Lacombe, Alberta, …
Developing A Discipleship Strategy For The Dunamis Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Brooklyn, New York, Donnieval Walker
Developing A Discipleship Strategy For The Dunamis Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Brooklyn, New York, Donnieval Walker
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. The Dunamis Seventh-day Adventist Church has evolved from a church that, historically, was passionately spiritual and nurturing to one that seems to have lost its sense of identity and mission. The result is an inertia that manifests itself in a breakdown in communication, the inability to translate the gospel into the “language” of the community, and a general decline in spiritual commitment. Although some progress has been made in the recent past, there is still a gap between missional demands and practice. This appears to be symptomatic of the deeper issue of failing to experience the meaning of discipleship …

Master's Theses
In this study, I analyze how Chinese and English naming practices influence name adoption and explicate how the use and choice of names by Taiwanese international students and Taiwanese American students at San José State University, California, are structured through social interaction and cultural context. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with 10 Taiwanese international students and 10 Taiwanese American students. The interviews focused on how they construct their identities and produce social relations with others through their choice and use of ethnic and/or English names.
The study findings help to illuminate areas that until now have not received …
The Impact Of Berguis V. Thompkins On The Eroding Miranda Warnings And Limited-English Proficient Individuals: You Must Speak Up To Remain Silent, Brenda L. Rosales
The Impact Of Berguis V. Thompkins On The Eroding Miranda Warnings And Limited-English Proficient Individuals: You Must Speak Up To Remain Silent, Brenda L. Rosales
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
Miranda v. Arizona requires law enforcement to warn defendants of their right to remain silent and give defendants an explanation that anything said can and will be used against the defendant in court. However, Berghuis v. Thompkins turned Miranda upside down by requiring defendants to unambiguously invoke their right to remain silent or be legally presumed to have waived their rights. Meaning that a defendant's yes or no answer to any question, including questions unrelated to the case, may be interpreted as a knowingly and intelligent waiver of the defendant's Miranda rights.
This note will address how the lower standard …
Cultivating A Rainbow Median Through The Study Of Sexuality In Second Language Acquisition: Identity Construction Of Lesbian Women Native To The Southern Region Of The United States, Elizabeth Walker Graves
Cultivating A Rainbow Median Through The Study Of Sexuality In Second Language Acquisition: Identity Construction Of Lesbian Women Native To The Southern Region Of The United States, Elizabeth Walker Graves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite diverging theories concerning the dissimilarities between male and female speakers, there is a general consensus that there is relevance in the relationship between gender and language, especially when considering the sociolinguistic effects of gender in second language acquisition and for the L2 learner. While there is a wealth of publications dedicated to examining the relationship between gendered roles and language, the idea of superseding the study of gender roles with a more comprehensive and considered study of gender identities has not been as forthcoming until very recently. Furthermore, there is little significant research into the relationship between gender identity …
Good Fences Make Good Neighboring Rights: The German Federal Supreme Court Rules On The Digital Sampling Of Sound Recordings In Metall Auf Metall, Tracy Reilly
School of Law Faculty Publications
When viewed in the context of sound recording infringement and digital sampling, two recent high court rulings—one in the United States and the other in Germany—have determined that good fences do, indeed, make for sensible legal boundaries with respect to the copyrights held by the owners of sound recordings. While the legal doctrines employed by the courts in each of these cases are different in letter and theory, both courts concluded that owners of rights held in sound recordings should reasonably expect the law to protect the valid boundaries of those rights when third parties engage in the practice of …
Mediated Processes In Writing For Publication: Perspectives Of Chinese Science Postdoctoral Researchers In America, Mimi Li
English Faculty Research
Sociocultural theory provides an explanatory framework for understanding human activity in the community of practice. This paper aims to address science researchers’ scholarly writing for publication processes from a sociocultural perspective. The author conducts a study via in-depth reflective interviews with three Chinese science postdoctoral researchers in America in an attempt to find their specific mediated actions and dynamic processes in writing for publication. In light of Engeström’s (1987, 1999) activity system, this paper, drawing on the interview data, explores the four mediating factors: objects/goals, artifacts, community, and roles, which afford and constrain the goings-on in the researchers’ writing for …
Ecocriticism And Christian Literary Scholarship, Timothy J. Burbery
Ecocriticism And Christian Literary Scholarship, Timothy J. Burbery
English Faculty Research
This essay presents a case for ecocriticism as a viable critical method for Christian scholars. It begins with an historical overview of the method, then examines common ground shared by ecocriticism and Christianity, including what amounts to a kind of critical realism, and the belief in the inherent goodness of creation. Two potential obstacles are then addressed by way of Lynn White, Jr.'s famous essay, "The Historical Roots of our Ecologic Crisis." These include the relationship of the Bible and the environment, and the charge of anthropocentrism. I believe White is partly right, but contend that neither objection is fatal …

Wikis, as emerging Web 2.0 tools, have been increasingly implemented in language classrooms. To explore the current state of research and inform future studies, this article reviews the past research on the use of wikis in second/foreign language classes. Using Google Scholar and the ERIC database, the researcher examines twenty-one empirical studies published in fourteen peer-reviewed journals from 2008 to 2011. Specifically, the researcher takes a holistic review of this body of literature, including theoretical frameworks, research goals, contexts and participants, tasks and wiki applications, and research methods and instruments. The researcher identifies four main research themes investigated in the …
Politeness Strategies In Wiki-Mediated Communication Of Efl Collaborative Writing Tasks, Mimi Li
Politeness Strategies In Wiki-Mediated Communication Of Efl Collaborative Writing Tasks, Mimi Li
English Faculty Research
Informed by the theory of social constructivism and computer-mediated communication (CMC), wiki-mediated collaborative writing has been increasingly implemented in second or foreign language classes. However, to date, no research has addressed students’ interaction and negotiation of their social relationship during wiki-mediated collaboration. Drawing on politeness theory, particularly Brown and Levinson (1987)’s taxonomy of politeness strategies, this study analyzed the wiki-mediated discourse of one collaborative writing group in a Chinese EFL context. This particular writing group consisted of three EFL college students at a southwestern university in China. This article examined specifically how this small group actively engaged in social interaction …
Exigencies For Engaging Undergraduates In Rhetorical Problem Solving : Insights From Engineering Managers And A3 Report Analyses, Jean Straw Declerck
Exigencies For Engaging Undergraduates In Rhetorical Problem Solving : Insights From Engineering Managers And A3 Report Analyses, Jean Straw Declerck
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Undergraduate education has a historical tradition of preparing students to meet the problem-solving challenges they will encounter in work, civic, and personal contexts. This thesis research was conducted to study the role of rhetoric in engineering problem solving and decision making and to pose pedagogical strategies for preparing undergraduate students for workplace problem solving. Exploratory interviews with engineering managers as well as the heuristic analyses of engineering A3 project planning reports suggest that Aristotelian rhetorical principles are critical to the engineer's success: Engineers must ascertain the rhetorical situation surrounding engineering problems; apply and adapt invention heuristics to conduct inquiry; draw …

Interpersonal Complementarity In The Mental Health Intake: A Mixed-Methods Study, Daniel C. Rosen, Alisa B. Miller, Ora Nakash, Lucila Halpern, Margarita Alegría
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
The study examined which socio-demographic differences between clients and providers influenced interpersonal complementarity during an initial intake session; that is, behaviors that facilitate harmonious interactions between client and provider. Complementarity was assessed using blinded ratings of 114 videotaped intake sessions by trained observers. Hierarchical linear models were used to examine how match between client and provider in race/ethnicity, sex, and age were associated with levels of complementarity. A qualitative analysis investigated potential mechanisms that accounted for overall complementarity beyond match by examining client-provider dyads in the top and bottom quartiles of the complementarity measure. Results indicated significant interactions between client's …

Points Of Leverage: Navigating Tensions Between Socio-Culturally Relevant Teaching And Accountability Pressures, Kathryn Mcintosh Ciechanowski
Points Of Leverage: Navigating Tensions Between Socio-Culturally Relevant Teaching And Accountability Pressures, Kathryn Mcintosh Ciechanowski
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This qualitative study explores how an elementary teacher navigated tensions between accountability and bilingual learners‘ needs. Questions included: How did a teacher employ students‘ socio-cultural resources in content areas? How did accountability shape use of resources? What are points of leverage—i.e., promising instructional practices to be further developed and harnessed—to meet student needs? Findings show how Ms. Montclair briefly connected to students‘ resources, focusing on making content comprehensible, transmitting information, staying on pace, and practicing testing. Although familiar with project-based and family/community-oriented learning, accountability measures impacted instruction. Yet promising instruction integrates socio-cultural resources to promote innovation and meaning.

This writing presents our views, as university teacher educators and scholars, concerning some issues pertaining to the readiness of contemporary Canadian education to move forward, well, with confidence and competence, into the mid-21st Century. We posit that all which is possible, educationally, lives in the give and take between Canadian education‘s geo-political, economic and linguistic past, the current functioning of contemporary schools as contested learning and teaching sites, and the increasing impacts of globalisation. We draw from guiding adult education principles in support of an enriched and expanded commitment to teacher professional development as a pathway to sustainable education reform.

Promoting Cross-Cultural Competence And Awareness In Teacher Education: Toward The Integration Of Western And Non-Western Perspectives, Stephen Woolworth, Vidya Thirumurthy
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Calls for culturally competent teachers persist amidst the ongoing diversification of the P-12 student population (Aud et al. 2010), continued racial homogeneity of the teacher workforce (Boser, 2011), chronic academic achievement disparities between majority and minority student groups (Vanneman et al., 2009), and persistent racial disproportionality in school discipline practices (Losen et al, 2012). In an effort to encourage and promote cross-cultural competence and awareness, we describe a graduate seminar we designed and taught around the integration of western and nonwestern perspectives on cognition, development and learning. We share a number of insights gained from the seminar experience and conclude …
