The Common Reader And The Archival Classroom: Disciplinary History For The Twenty-First Century, Rachel Sagner Buurma, L. Heffernan Jan 2012

The Common Reader And The Archival Classroom: Disciplinary History For The Twenty-First Century, Rachel Sagner Buurma, L. Heffernan

English Literature Faculty Works

The essay draws on archival research to reconstruct the midcentury classrooms of Cleanth Brooks and Edmund Wilson. Our description of these classrooms - the participants, texts, and the exemplary as well as the undertheorized moments gathered within them - dissolves the divisions between research and teaching, historicist and formalist methods, skeptical critics and invested common readers, disciplinary spaces and public ones, that have particularly plagued the discipline of English in recent years. In Brooks's classroom - long figured as a foundational site for our discipline - we draw out, alongside Brooks's strong theory of the marginal and rarified status of …

Belize Coverage Exercise Study: Assessing The Status To Build A Portfolio Of Targeted Interventions For Vulnerable Girls, Joint Un Programme Of Adolescent Girls

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The United Nation Children Fund, the United Nations Population Fund, and Population Council staff collaborated on a number of activities to generate evidence on the lives and experiences of adolescent girls in Belize. The goal of the collaboration was to establish targeted, evidence-based policies and programs sensitive to the unique needs of girls. The information presented in this report is of particular interest to program planners, policymakers, and decisionmakers from a wide range of institutions seeking to designate resources for programs and policies for vulnerable or marginalized subgroups of young people, particularly girls, in Belize. The report presents empirical evidence …

The Relationship Between Children's Nonmainstream English Dialect Density And Their Emergfent Reading Achievement, Katelyn Danielle Rodrigue Jan 2012

The Relationship Between Children's Nonmainstream English Dialect Density And Their Emergfent Reading Achievement, Katelyn Danielle Rodrigue

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between children’s use of nonmainstream dialect and their emerging reading ability. The data were from 79 kindergarteners; 39 were AA and 40 were non-AA; 38 were male and 41 were female. All children presented with varying language abilities and dialect densities, as measured by the DELV-ST. Dialect densities ranged from Mainstream American English (MAE), some variation of MAE, and strong variations of MAE. The children’s reading abilities were measured by the DIBELS, which was administered at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Preliminary results showed that children’s …

Beyond The Excuses: The Effect Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy On African American Male Students, Kelly Cousette Jan 2012

Beyond The Excuses: The Effect Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy On African American Male Students, Kelly Cousette

All ETDs from UAB

ABSTRACT Nearly 30 years have elapsed since the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that America's public education system is failing African American male students. These widely used statistics state that compared to their White and African American female counterparts, African American male students underperform in nearly all educational measures (i.e. GPA, standardized test scores, graduation and dropout rates, etc.). The majority of the research on this academic achievement gap has focused on deepening our understanding of the barriers to educating African American males. While understanding the problem is a logical first step to resolving any dilemma, research on this …

Spectral Analysis Of Stop Consonants In Individuals With Dysarthria Secondary To Stroke, Trescha S. Kay Jan 2012

Spectral Analysis Of Stop Consonants In Individuals With Dysarthria Secondary To Stroke, Trescha S. Kay

LSU Master's Theses

Dysarthria refers to a group of neurogenic speech disorders which result in abnormal strength, speed, range, steadiness, tone, or accuracy of movements required for speech production. Although speech deficits of dysarthria are heterogeneous according to lesion sites and/or etiologies such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease (PD), “imprecise consonants” has been known as one of the most prominent and frequently occurring features of dysarthria, which subsequently contributes to decreased speech intelligibility. The present study points out the paucity of acoustic data on consonants produced by speakers with dysarthria, especially by spectral analysis, and reports four spectral moment …

Conducting A Hispanic Health Needs Assessment In Rural Kansas: Building The Foundation For Community Action, Melissa Bopp, Elizabeth A. Fallon, Debra J. Bolton, Andrew T. Kaczynski, Susan Lukwago, Alicia Brooks

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Healthy People 2020 states ethnic health disparities are a priority for the US. Although considerable national statistics document ethnic-related health disparities, information specific to rural areas is scarce and does not provide direction for implementing chronic disease prevention programming. Therefore, the purpose of our project was to use the Hispanic Health Needs Assessment (HHNA), a tool designed by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (NAHH), in culturally diverse, rural Southwest Kansas. Our focus areas included: access to healthcare, heart disease, diabetes, overweight, nutrition, and physical activity.

Methods: The assessment followed six steps: (1) developing the assessment team, (2) data gathering …

OBJECTIVE: To compare the comprehension of depressed and non-depressed male and female Iranian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in receptive skills, and to investigate whether inefficiency in learning English could be due to depression. METHODS: We selected 126 boys and 96 girls aged between 15 and 18 by simple random sampling from 2 high schools in Kerman, Iran to examine whether there was any significant relationship between depression and comprehension of receptive skills in males and females. We undertook this descriptive, correlational study between January and May 2011 in Kerman, Iran. After administration of the Beck Depression …

Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams Jan 2012

Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

Information security is a necessary requirement of information sharing in the healthcare environment. Research shows that the application of security in this setting is sometimes subject to work-arounds where healthcare practitioners feel forced to incorporate practices that they have not had an input into and with which they have not engaged with. This can result in a sense of security practitioners and healthcare practitioners being culturally very different in their approach to information systems. As a result such practices do not constitute part of their community of practice nor their identity. In order to respond to this, systems designers typically …

Driveway Moments: Developing Syllabi According To Kenneth Burke, Kristen Lynn Majocha Jan 2012

Driveway Moments: Developing Syllabi According To Kenneth Burke, Kristen Lynn Majocha

Basic Communication Course Annual

Have you ever remained parked in your car in order to hear the end of a song or a news story? This is called a driveway moment (Pine, 2007). Kenneth Burke refers to this fulfilling of our desires, the desire for the conclusion, as an “appetite” that humans have for form (Burke, 1931). Songs have form, movies have form, literature has form. As teachers of the Basic Communication Course, we should recognize this appetite for form and incorporate form into our syllabi. Form in the way Kenneth Burke describes—form that has one part leading to the anticipation of another part—is …

Global Advances In Business Communication From Multiple Perspectives: A Panel Discussion From Experts In The Field, David A. Victor Jan 2012

Global Advances In Business Communication From Multiple Perspectives: A Panel Discussion From Experts In The Field, David A. Victor

Global Advances in Business Communication

This article presents a panel discussion from 16 leading experts on the direction of global business communication answering the following five questions: 1) In what direction do you see global business communication going? 2) How do new media and social media influence global business communication? 3) In what way does local culture continue to affect global business communication? In what ways do multinational companies and enterprises need to consider local cultural differences regarding their training needs, marketing campaigns or organizational communication? 4) Related to the previous question, while signs of convergence are present in the increasingly integrated world economy, clear …

"Crappy New Year": Evaluation, Stance And Drinking Stories, Martin Edward Pfeiffer Jan 2012

"Crappy New Year": Evaluation, Stance And Drinking Stories, Martin Edward Pfeiffer

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is an examination of drinking stories and how authors, through linguistic means, achieve narrative, social, and cultural goals. Language is a biological fact of Homo sapiens and narrative is a universal method by which humans make sense of their world. Humans’ primeval relationship with alcohol is an expression of the innate desire to achieve altered states of consciousness. To study drinking stories is to study a manifestation of the essence of humanity. This research employs the narrative theories of Labov (1997) and Labov and Waletzky (1967) combined with Du Bois’s (2007) model of stance. I focus on the …

Metaphors, Models, And Meaning In Contract Law, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2012

Metaphors, Models, And Meaning In Contract Law, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Why does there seem to be such a wide gap between the subject matter of the usual first-year contracts course and what practitioners (particularly transactional lawyers) actually experience? This article is an attempt to bridge the gap, combining insights from academic theory and real-world law practice. My claim is that the law as discipline has developed its own powerful but self-contained conceptual framework — in the coinage of one noted scholar, “an epistemic trap.” The subject matter of contract law, something that is largely the creation of private parties and not the state, requires dealing with legal truth not just …

Finding Feminism In American Political Discourse : A Discourse Analysis Of Post-Feminist Language, Jessica Margaret Burris Jan 2012

Finding Feminism In American Political Discourse : A Discourse Analysis Of Post-Feminist Language, Jessica Margaret Burris

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The term “feminist” is a widely used label that is often embraced by women who do not advocate feminism. The wide use of the feminist label in contrast to the declining presence of feminist activism indicates a problem with the development of a third wave of feminism in the United States. In this study, I evaluated trends in feminism in the United States through an analysis of public political discourse. A semantic discourse analysis of political discourse from 1870 to 2011 evaluated a shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronoun usage by female political speakers. Speeches compiled for …

‘From S.A. To L.A.’: Branding Transport And Circulating Celebrity In South Africa’S Nonhle Goes To Hollywood, Brandeise Monk-Payton Jan 2012

‘From S.A. To L.A.’: Branding Transport And Circulating Celebrity In South Africa’S Nonhle Goes To Hollywood, Brandeise Monk-Payton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

How do local stars navigate global itineraries? This article analyzes black South African celebrity Nonhle Thema and the (dis)continuous flow of her transnational brand. Thema’s individual star image is predicated on her work as a television personality and entertainment news journalist who traverses across global markets in order to bring external (particularly U.S.) star visibility to a South African audience. Thema’s position as a conduit for the circulation of celebrity between South Africa and the world-at-large is made more complex when she becomes the subject of this transport in her original reality series Nonhle Goes to Hollywood (2011). As the …

Beyond Nuremberg: A Critique Of Informed Consent In Third World Human Subject Research , Jacob Schuman Jan 2012

Beyond Nuremberg: A Critique Of Informed Consent In Third World Human Subject Research , Jacob Schuman

Journal of Law and Health

This Article discusses the history of informed consent, critically analyzes this principle, and suggests an alternative approach to informed consent. Part II explores the concept of informed consent, including its philosophical bases, its implementation through FDA regulations, and current proposals on how to protect the principle in drug testing conducted abroad. Part III performs a critical analysis of the principle of informed consent; first providing an empirical examination of the realities of Third World human subject research, and then questioning both the coherence of an abstract “right” to informed consent, as well as the possibility of truly autonomous “consent” to …

Yellow, In Peril: How Public Health Discourse On Tuberculosis (Tb) Reveals, Refines, And Reinforces The Racial Stigmatization Of Asian Americans, Laura Dellplain Jan 2012

Yellow, In Peril: How Public Health Discourse On Tuberculosis (Tb) Reveals, Refines, And Reinforces The Racial Stigmatization Of Asian Americans, Laura Dellplain

Honors Papers

In this paper, I argue that while public health discourse on tuberculosis may reveal existent epidemiological trends in and among particular social groups, the discursive framing of this data unnecessarily racializes the disease. More specifically, public health discourse uses frameworks of "othering" and an imagined transnationalism to reflect but also refine and reinforce historicized stigmas of Asian Americans as non-normative, perpetual outsiders, and disease carriers. I assert that this discursive raciliazation of TB superficially constructs a causal link between Asian Americans and the incidence of TB in America and consequently results in significant social and political costs for many Asian …

One Nation, Many Borders: Language And Identity In Mayan Guatemala And Mexico, Anna Caroline Peckham Jan 2012

One Nation, Many Borders: Language And Identity In Mayan Guatemala And Mexico, Anna Caroline Peckham

Honors Papers

This paper explores language ideologies, code choice, and ethnolinguistic identity in Maya-dominated areas of Mexico and Guatemala. As the Maya, or Pan-Maya, Movement has grown in scope and force since the 1980s, particularly in Guatemala, possessing a "Maya" identity has become defined in new ways. Since Mayan languages are still spoken with a strong degree of vitality in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and the western highlands of Guatemala, examining Maya identity through beliefs about, and use of, indigenous languages and Spanish is a particularly useful focus. In comparing Maya peoples' beliefs and identities in each of these regions, this paper argues …

A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser Jan 2012

A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser

Honors Papers

This project follows the strangely consistent fascination in modern and contemporary poetry with vessel objects. From Wallace Stevens' "jar [placed] in Tennessee," to "That vase" of Philip Larkin or James Merrill's "clear vase of dry leaves vibrating on and on," even so far back in literary history as the shapely "Grecian Urn" of John Keats' famous ode among numerous others, the genre is teeming with vessels. I argue that these kinds of objects open up distinctive possibilities for poetic exploration because of the unique way that they engage with space. Consequently, by using these objects as metaphors, poets are able …
