The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright
The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, I detail the forensics education of Kenneth Burke, a leading rhetorical theorist and critic of the twentieth century. After investigating this previously unexamined area, I argue that Burke’s competitive forensics experiences pivotally informed his rhetorical schema. Theoretically guided by Burke’s pivotal term the forensic, I begin by mapping the contours of Burke’s educational biography. Next, I analyze and reconstruct Burke’s forensics education by focusing on the forensic organizations of Peabody High School, Burke’s literary society experiences at Ohio State University and Columbia University, and the literary activities of Greenwich Village. Finally, I proffer connections between forensics …
The America Invents Act 500: Effects Of Patent Monetization Entities On Us Litigation, Sara Jeruss, Robin Feldman, Joshua Walker
The America Invents Act 500: Effects Of Patent Monetization Entities On Us Litigation, Sara Jeruss, Robin Feldman, Joshua Walker
Duke Law & Technology Review
Any discussion of flaws in the United States patent system inevitably turns to the system’s modern villain: non-practicing entities, known more colorfully as patent trolls. For many years, however, discussions about non-practicing entities have been long on speculation and short on data. In 2011 Congress directed the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office to study the effects of non-practicing entities on patent litigation. At the request of the GAO, we collected and coded a set of patent lawsuits filed over the past five years. This article presents our analysis of the data and its implications. The data confirm in a dramatic fashion …

Other And Self-Representation: A Pentadic Criticism Of Kosovar Muslim And Roma Identity As Represented In Photographs By James Nachtwey And Djordje Jovanovic, Melody S. Follweiler
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
This is an interdisciplinary study that integrates the fields of visual rhetoric, media, and identity. This study seeks to gain a better understanding of photojournalism as the medium of rhetorical messages and communicative power in terms of representing the identity, experience, and perspective of Kosovar Muslims and Roma in Other and self-representations. By applying Kenneth Burke’s theory of dramatism and pentadic criticism, I seek to illustrate and analyze how an outsider, James Nachtwey, uses rhetorical appeals to represent Kosovar Muslims during the Kosovo War of 1999 and how an insider, Djordje Jovanovic, uses rhetorical appeals to represent Kosovar Roma during …

Exclusion And Xenophobia: Norwegian Society's Influences On Anders Behring Breivik's Counter-Jihadism, Anna Katariina Oraviita Eriksen
Master's Theses
On July 22nd 2011 Norway was shocked by the first terrorist attacks on Norwegian soil since the German occupation during World War II. As Norway is internationally renowned as a peaceful and idyllic society the terrorist attacks, questions of why the attacks took place in Norway arose. My thesis examines which societal factors in Norway have contributed to Anders Behring Breivik's terrorist attacks in Oslo and on Utøya, July 22nd 2011. To do so, I have employed qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles which has allowed me to extract themes relevant to determine which factors in the Norwegian …

When Worldviews Collide: What Linguistic Style Matching And Distal Language Reveal About Deception In Political Discourse, Lucille Marie Booker
When Worldviews Collide: What Linguistic Style Matching And Distal Language Reveal About Deception In Political Discourse, Lucille Marie Booker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Political discourse is an observable, measurable, and testable manifestation of political worldviews. However, when worldviews collide, notions of truth and of lies are put to the test. The challenge for researchers is how to establish confidence in their analysis. Despite the growing interest in deception research from a diversity of fields and industries, the trend is to focus on validating the assessment approach to the data without considering validity issues related to the data itself. Such a trend is concerned more with how to assess linguistic features and less with what is being assessed. By contrast, this dissertation is concerned …

A Comparative Case Study Of Service-Learning In Teacher Education: Rethinking Benefits And Challenges Of Partners And Placements, Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell, Jaqueline Bach
A Comparative Case Study Of Service-Learning In Teacher Education: Rethinking Benefits And Challenges Of Partners And Placements, Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell, Jaqueline Bach
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
In this comparative case study, two teacher educators turned the research lens on their own experiences with service-learning. Positing that teacher education programming can explicitly address pre-service teachers’ assumptions through course-embedded academic service-learning activities, particularly reflection, the advantages and difficulties of various placements and partners were examined. Using a case study design allowed the researchers to share their experiences locating suitable placements and forging sustainable partnerships for their courses. Findings include the importance of considering the utility of non-traditional placements and settings, the value of cultivating long-term partners, and the significance of frequent and ongoing reflection. The authors conclude that …

Responding To The Need For Language Support: Partnership In Primary, Secondary And Tertiary Education, Gail A. Mceachron, Joy Martin
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
Abstract
This study explored how school, university, and community partners provided language support to K-12 students whose first language was something other than English. Six English as a second language (ESL) supervisors representing six Virginia school divisions were asked to describe school-university language partnerships. Research questions were: According to ESL supervisors, how do PK-12 public school divisions and institutions of higher education collaborate on behalf of students whose first language is not English? What do ESL supervisors perceive as ways in which current partnerships could be improved and expanded? Tape-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed along with information available through …
United By Language, Literacy And Learning: Creating Spaces In Schools To Support Refugee Literacy, Loshini Naidoo Dr
United By Language, Literacy And Learning: Creating Spaces In Schools To Support Refugee Literacy, Loshini Naidoo Dr
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
This paper discusses the Refugee Action Support program, which is a program of literacy support for newly arrived refugee high school students in Australia. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that while some refugee students do achieve success in schools, many refugee students arriving in Australia under the humanitarian program fail to attain a level of education that will give them access to and allow them to participate in tertiary education. Severe disruptions to education are a consistent feature for these students making current levels of support inadequate to meet the needs of refugee background students who …
Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak
Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
This research uses participant observation and other qualitative methods to evaluate whether faculty-led short-term study abroad programs can successfully carry out responsible ‘fair trade’, and thereby substantially benefit not only students but also the host communities. The research draws insights by comparing two experiential learning courses taught in South Africa and Dominica. Results suggest that students benefit in various transformative ways in both courses, by applying sustainability and development studies concepts to real-life service and hands-on learning in cross-cultural situations. The Dominica course yields more host community benefits, however, because of the instructors’ long-term commitments to reciprocal partnerships and equitable …

Encouraged By A Little Progress: Voting Rights And The Contests Over Social Place And Civil Society In Tennessee's Fayette And Haywood Counties, 1958-1964, Richard Lavell Saunders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Between 1958 and 1964 the citizens of black-majority populations in adjoining West Tennessee counties struggled to claim and exercise citizens' rights to participate in civil society. Voting rights activism amon the black community was answered with an economic embargo conducted by county officials and the busines community. Voting rights were the fracture point in civic society as both counties made the change from tenant to mechanized agriculture and wrestled over the civil and economic position of a no-longer-necessary laboring population. This study examines voter registration as a catalyst of socioeconomic change and social discourse in rural America. During the 1960s …

Methods For Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners, Johannah M. Strohman
Methods For Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners, Johannah M. Strohman
Senior Honors Theses
With the increase of diversity in American schools and the growing importance of English around the world, teaching English as a second language has become an essential aspect to education. It is difficult to have students of different cultural backgrounds in the classroom who are not proficient in English. A teacher cannot expect these students to succeed in an English only classroom setting. It is important that there be specialized teachers to address the needs of these students in order to reach all students where they are and help them accomplish all that they need to in order to succeed. …

Positive Versus Negative Agents: The Effects Of Emotions On Learning, Carolyn Mcgregor Forsyth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The current study investigates the impact of affect, mood contagion, and linguistic alignment on learning during tutorial conversations between a human student and two artificial pedagogical agents. The study uses an Intelligent Tutoring System known as OperationARIES! to engage students in tutorial conversations with animated agents. In this investigation, 48 college students (N = 48) conversed with pedagogical agents as they displayed 3 different moods (i.e., positive, negative, and neutral) along with a control condition in a within-subjects design. Results indicate that the mood of the agent did not significantly impact student learning even though mood contagion did occur between …

Pidgin In The Classroom: Hawai`I'S English Standard Schools, Americanization, And Hawaiian Identity, 1920-1960, Katherine J E Fox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
From 1924 to 1960 some of Hawai`i's public schools were segregated institutions. Unlike the segregated schools of the mainland, the main goal of the English Standard schools, as they were known, was to ensure that English-speaking children be taught in environments free from Pidgin and other native languages spoken by the majority of Hawai`i's school children. Because this segregation was linguistically-based, it was possible for children of all races and ethnicities to attend English Standard schools, but there can be no doubt that they were heavily dominated by white students in the early years of the program, much to the …
