The Drawn-Out Battle Against Stigma: Mental Health In Modern American Comics And Graphic Novels, Swee Khee Brenda Seah
The Drawn-Out Battle Against Stigma: Mental Health In Modern American Comics And Graphic Novels, Swee Khee Brenda Seah
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
The discussion of mental health issues in the media significantly shapes public perceptions, most notably in negative portrayals that contribute to the stereotyping of mental health patients. Perhaps surprisingly, comics and graphic novels are forms of media that have potential to mitigate such stigma, despite earlier criticism of mental health stereotypes propagated in some comics. This is reflected in a recent trend of comics treating mental health issues in more sympathetic ways. This paper discusses three American comics from the last decade, examining depictions of post-traumatic stress disorder in Garry Trudeau's comic strip, Doonesbury, around 2005-2006, schizophrenia in Nate …

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The goal of the research in this data curation profile is to learn about the linguistic aspects of the Cheyenne language with a focus on semantics, pragmatics, and syntactic issues. The data is gathered from recordings of short stories or examples given in response to specific questions. The data management issues center around the early stages of her data. The researcher described a need for a technician who could help segment and transcribe the audio files and a need to apply metadata using morphological gloss that would make it searchable. Additionally, the data would need to be available in a …

Sexism In Teaching Spanish: Linguistic Discrimination Is Sometimes Unconscious, Aileen Dever
Sexism In Teaching Spanish: Linguistic Discrimination Is Sometimes Unconscious, Aileen Dever
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
The Spanish language is becoming more flexible in creating feminine forms for occupational names that correspond with the already existing masculine terms. However, there has been some resistance among Spaniards with regard to using feminine forms like física to refer to a physicist who is a woman. Similarly, there have been objections to química (chemist, chemistry), música (musician, music), and others because, some say, such terms are ambiguous and confusing with regard to the professions. Do words and the way they are used significantly affect their meaning? The author discusses this question by highlighting linguistic discrimination in Spanish that is …
Organic Storytelling: A Key For Promoting Creativity, Community And Healing Activities In Education With Twice-Exceptional Students, Gail Herman
Community of Scholars Day—Posters
What the presenter calls "Organic Storytelling" allows the folktale to grow organically with images of each new teller and audience by adapting and augmenting the mentor's work, Dr. Mara Capy (1970), which she found from an ethnographer in West Africa. Learn to use "Organic Interventions" and encourage listeners to use their "mind's eye," then share their ideas at certain times in the process. Learn how to model Carl Rogers' view that feelings are not right or wrong and that the difference between feeling and action is thinking - often creative thinking at that! In this way the story, a gift …
Does Alan Moore Have The (Untranslatable) Approach To Translation?, Frank Bramlett
Does Alan Moore Have The (Untranslatable) Approach To Translation?, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
We’ve all experienced it: that moment when we’re reading a sci-fi story or watching a sci-fi movie about alien contact and we realize that everyone is speaking the same language….usually English. Early Star Trek episodes are sometimes lampooned for this Anglo-centric stance. So the question for us is this: how does everyone know the same language?
Authors and artists approach the problem of cross-linguistic translation in multiple ways. (In this post, I’m conflating translation and interpretation under the term translation, but these are different linguistic processes.) Fans of Doctor Who, for example, know that the TARDIS facilitates the ‘automatic’ translation …

The Effects Of College Savings On Postsecondary School Enrollment Rates Of Students With Disabilities, Gregory A. Cheatman, William Elliott Iii
The Effects Of College Savings On Postsecondary School Enrollment Rates Of Students With Disabilities, Gregory A. Cheatman, William Elliott Iii
Center for Social Development Research
This is the first study to examine whether parents’ college savings is positively associated with special education students’ enrollment in postsecondary school. In addition to examining postsecondary school enrollment among students with disabilities, we also examine whether students’ and parents’ college expectations act as a mediator between parents’ college savings and postsecondary school enrollment. We find that while not all types of college savings are associated with postsecondary enrollment, college bonds are a consistent and strong statistically significant predictor of postsecondary enrollment for students with disabilities. Further, we find evidence students’ and parents’ college expectations act as a partial mediator …

Ototoxic Hearing Loss And Retinoblastoma Patients, Shaum Bhagat
Ototoxic Hearing Loss And Retinoblastoma Patients, Shaum Bhagat
Faculty Publications
Chemotherapy is often used in the conservative management of retinoblastoma. Chemotherapy drugs, while ameliorative, can produce long-lasting side effects that potentially can affect survivor quality of life. Carboplatin is a common chemotherapy agent with known ototoxic side effects that is used in the treatment of retinoblastoma (Rodriguez-Galindo et al., 2003). The potential for carboplatin-induced hearing loss is of concern to the medical professional, given that retinoblastoma is often diagnosed in early childhood and children with retinoblastoma have visual impairments. This chapter will outline the mechanisms underlying carboplatin ototoxicity. The extent of knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of carboplatin-induced hearing loss will …

Test-Retest Reliability In The Determination Of The Speech Recognition Threshold, Alyssa Montierth Jacobs
Test-Retest Reliability In The Determination Of The Speech Recognition Threshold, Alyssa Montierth Jacobs
Theses and Dissertations
For many years, speech recognition threshold (SRT) testing has been used as an indicator of audiologic health. However, with changing methods and technology, test-retest reliability has not been reviewed extensively with newer digitally recorded spondaic words which meet a published criterion of listener familiarity. This study examined the test-retest reliability of 33 high frequency usage and psychometrically equated spondaic words. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommended method (2-dB decrements) was used to measure the left and right SRT of 40 participants using both male and female talker recordings. For each participant, four SRTs were found during the test condition and four …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Project–Based Instruction And Student Achievement In High School Social Studies, Emily J. Summers, Gail Dickinson
A Longitudinal Investigation Of Project–Based Instruction And Student Achievement In High School Social Studies, Emily J. Summers, Gail Dickinson
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This longitudinal study focused on how project–based instruction (PBI) influencedsecondary social studies students’ academic achievement and promoted College andCareer Readiness (CCR). We explored and compared student achievement in a PBI highschool versus a traditional instruction high school within the same rural school district. While previous literature indicated that PBI involved more preparation time and a steeperlearning curve for both teachers and students, we found that in high school social studies, students’ achievement gains actualized within one year. PBI students outperformedpeers who learned from a traditional curriculum in both social studies achievement andCCR preparedness.

Valanced Voices: Student Experiences With Learning Disabilities & Differences, Zoe Dupree Fine
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This feminist oral history project located at the intersections of disability, feminist, body politics, and educational theory presents an analysis of three individual student narratives about their experiences with learning disabilities and learning differences (LD/Ds) at the high school and university levels. This thesis introduces students' accounts of their daily lives, pasts, personal views, experiences, and memories about having learning disabilities and learning differences into the existing scholarship on LDs and reveals how students' narrated experiences might shed light on the ways in which education might be reformed to better meet the needs of students like them. In response to …
Esl Teachers' Perceptions Of The Process For Identifying Adolescent Latino English Language Learners With Specific Learning Disabilities, Emily Ferlis
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the question how do ESL teachers perceive the prereferral process for identifying adolescent Latino English language learners with specific learning disabilities? The study fits within the Latino Critical Race Theory framework and employs an interpretive phenomenological qualitative research approach. Participants were six secondary-level ESL teachers from two school districts with small ELL populations. Data consisted of in-depth interviews, researcher notes, and analytical memos. Phenomenological data analysis procedures followed recommendations by Colaizzi (1978) and Smith, Flowers, and Larkin (2009). Data validity measures included second-researcher review and member-checking. Results of the study are presented as descriptions of how participants …

French Orientalism In Reynaldo Hahn's Series "Orient" From Le Rossignol Eperdu, Norito Irei
French Orientalism In Reynaldo Hahn's Series "Orient" From Le Rossignol Eperdu, Norito Irei
Open Access Dissertations
Reynaldo Hahn, a Venezuelan-born French composer, is growing in popularity for his vocal repertoires in the American academia. His piano works have been practically unknown on this continent until the late American pianist Earl Wild recorded a series of his piano works, Le Rossignol Eperdu, containing 53 solo piano compositions. Le Rossignol Eperdu is divided into four series, and the second suite entitled “Orient” drew particular attention from disc reviewers. Currently, there is no publication or dissertation written about Reynaldo Hahn’s solo piano compositions in English, which limits accessibility to Reynaldo Hahn’s piano music. The purpose of this research is …

More Than Words: Rhetorical Devices In American Political Cartoons, Lawrence Ray Bush
More Than Words: Rhetorical Devices In American Political Cartoons, Lawrence Ray Bush
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that literary theory applied to political cartoons shows that cartoons are reasoned arguments. The rhetorical devices used in the cartoons mimic verbal devices used by essayists. These devices, in turn, make cartoons influential in that they have the power to persuade readers while making them laugh or smile. It also gives examples of literary theorists whose works can be applied to political cartooning, including Frederick Saussure, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Wolfgang Iser. Not only do those theorists' arguments apply to text, they also apply to pictorial representations.
This thesis also discusses changes in the cartoon art form over …
