Assessing Behavioral Health Risks, Health Conditions, And Preventive Health Practices Among American Indians/Alaska Natives In Nevada, Gwen Hosey, Shirley A. Llorens-Chen, Fares Qeadan, Daryl Crawford, Charlton Wilson, Wei Yang
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
The 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey was administered to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults in Nevada to determine whether health disparities exist between AI/ANs and the state’s general population. Results showed AI/ANs were 1.5 times more likely to smoke cigarettes, 3.5 times more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke, 3.2 times more likely to lack leisure-time physical activity, 9.7 times more likely to report fair/poor health status, and 7.7 times more likely to have a disability. In addition, AI/ANs were more likely to have current asthma (OR=5.0) and diabetes (OR=1.8). AI/AN women were 4.8 times as …

Changing Faces, Changing Voices: Hispanics And Georgia’S Spanish-Language Media Environment, D. Xavier Medina Vidal
Georgia Journal of Public Policy
Nathan Deal’s successful 2010 campaign to become Georgia’s 82nd governor included a promise to enact an Arizona-style immigration enforcement law in Georgia, a promise he kept when he signed HB 87 into law in May 2011. To be sure, the high saliency of immigration law enforcement and policy reform in Georgia has much to do with rapid growth of the state’s Hispanic population in recent years.

Oral And General Health Indicators For Lebanese Elderly In Oral Surveys: Review Article, Nada El Osta, Stéphanie Tubert-Jeannin, Nada Bou-Abboud Naaman, Martine Hennequin, Lana El Osta, Negib Geahchan
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Various factors are taken into account in assessing objectively the dental status and the quality of life related to oral health, particularly in elderly. Basic socio-demographic characteristics and oral hygiene habits must be identified and screened, respectively. The dental health can be evaluated using indicators such as the ASA score or by determining the person’s level of autonomy. Cognitive ability of older people must be checked prior to use oral health questionnaires. This competence can be assessed by the Mini Mental State score (MMS). The use of Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) evaluates the nutritional status of patients. The aim of …
Factors Associated With Instructor-Student Interaction And Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Yolanda Faye Mitchell
Factors Associated With Instructor-Student Interaction And Community College Students' Intent To Persist, Yolanda Faye Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
A causal-comparative, nonexperimental research study was conducted to analyze secondary data from the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE). SENSE assesses community college student behaviors in the earliest weeks of college, along with practices that are most likely to engage students and encourage them to persist. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of student demographic variables (age, sex, generation status) and time-commitment variables (children, employment, college enrollment status) on the interpersonal aspect of classroom student engagement, as defined by instructor-student interaction, of community college students. The study also examined the relationship between these variables and interactions …

Epistemic Two-Dimensionalism And Arguments From Epistemic Misclassification, Edward Elliott, Kelvin J. Mcqueen, Clas Weber
Epistemic Two-Dimensionalism And Arguments From Epistemic Misclassification, Edward Elliott, Kelvin J. Mcqueen, Clas Weber
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Epistemic Two-Dimensional Semantics (E2D) claims that expressions have a counterfactual intension and an epistemic intension. Epistemic intensions reflect cognitive significance such that sentences with necessary epistemic intensions are a priori. We defend E2D against an influential line of criticism: arguments from epistemic misclassification. We focus in particular on the arguments of Speaks [2010] and Schroeter [2005]. Such arguments conclude that E2D is mistaken from (i) the claim that E2D is committed to classifying certain sentences as a priori and (ii) the claim that such sentences are a posteriori. We aim to show that these arguments are unsuccessful as (i) and …
Oral History Heirlooms: Vitality And Substance In Learning, Arlene Abate Carpenter
Oral History Heirlooms: Vitality And Substance In Learning, Arlene Abate Carpenter
Theses and Dissertations
The major problem confronting educators is incorporating a simple, profitable, stimulating, and integrated learning technique in the classroom that motivates students, internalizes lessons, and produces active, enriched learners. This thesis demonstrates that the oral history genre is the viable solution. Nine planned project stages guide educators in establishing a new dimension of knowledge for students where interviews and research combine living memories with documented resources to create and preserve personalized history. The author obtained information through personal interviews with family members from the descendents of Vito Antonio Mevoli, Filomena (Onorato) Mevoli, Dominick Abate, and Catherine (Lorusso) Abate and researched data …
A Study Of Potential Risk Factors Of Depression Among Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Claudia Ximena Aguado Loi
A Study Of Potential Risk Factors Of Depression Among Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Claudia Ximena Aguado Loi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women with breast cancer commonly experience depression. However, this condition often goes unrecognized, undertreated, and understudied, especially in ethnic minorities. If left untreated, co-existing depression in women with cancer can complicate cancer treatment, lead to poor treatment adherence for both conditions, and decrease survival. These negative consequences are considerably higher among Latinas. With the growing number of Latinos and diversity within the Latino community, the literature has identified the need to disaggregate Latinos by region of origin. Unfortunately, few studies account for these differences and no study to date has examined risk factors of depression among Latinas diagnosed with breast …
