A Preliminary Study On Teenagers Aesthetic Cognition Schema Using Six Painting Themes, Ta-Wei Kuo, Yi-Lin Lo, Chao-Hsi Ho Jul 2012

A Preliminary Study On Teenagers Aesthetic Cognition Schema Using Six Painting Themes, Ta-Wei Kuo, Yi-Lin Lo, Chao-Hsi Ho

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The concept of schema is extensively applied into many fields like sociology, cognitive development, art therapy, etc. Generations with identical social background also differ in cognition of sub-cultural features and aesthetic feelings. Therefore, if testees of different ages are asked with same-topic questions, it’s possible to generalize common features and characteristics of perceptions under such theme, discover discrepancies between different ages or variables, and develop evaluation indicators. This study conducts two stages of investigations. At the first stage, testees are grouped according to their ages. 175 people draw pictures in terms of the topic, and different-age testees’ presentations of the …

The Aesthetics In Design And Cultural Studies, Theresa Lobo Jul 2012

The Aesthetics In Design And Cultural Studies, Theresa Lobo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

While industrial designers have traditionally advocated aesthetics in their work, with evocative forms and materials, recent advances in design philosophy about “user experience” suggest a deeper analysis. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore beauty as an experiential aesthetic value, dependent upon user-product interactions. The goal is to offer designers a valuable tool: a systematic, extensible model for describing beauty for design, with powerful insights drawn from other disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, computer science, and architecture. This paper strives to understand the concept of beauty as a value of human-product grounded in daily experience. Beauty is typically associated …

On Drawing In Mass Media Contexts, Mario Minichiello Jul 2012

On Drawing In Mass Media Contexts, Mario Minichiello

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses the role of the author’s drawing practice as applied to mass-mediated contexts. That is, the use of drawn imagery as a paradigm of analysis and expression of ideas published in various print and screen media. It seeks to explain the rationale for both the author’s individual, and editorially collaborative decision-making through the methodological framework of an Action Research model. In each case this is a ‘reflective’ process, which also helps examine how the images were developed in response to problem solving. The paper includes Action Research reflection on data collected in collaboration with filmmaker Solon Papadopoulos about …

Stillness As A Competence Of Design Intelligence, Fernando Rojas, Nicholas Spencer, Stuart English Jul 2012

Stillness As A Competence Of Design Intelligence, Fernando Rojas, Nicholas Spencer, Stuart English

DRS Biennial Conference Series

According to Cross (2006), designing can be viewed as a form of intelligence so that its competences can be identified, clarified and cultivated. This paper reviews and extends existing design literature by refining the language that describes design-intelligence and the identification, clarification and cultivation of design-intelligence competences. This document also reports on an initial study that used an Enhanced Reflective Practice Reporting Template within the context of professional practice to highlight: a) the value of improving a designer’s professional inner self-awareness through reflective practice enhanced with non-analytical mental training techniques, and b) that such processes can aid access to a …

The Influence Of Design Methods On The Design Process: Effect Of Use Of Scenario, Brainstorming, And Synectics On Designing, Hsien-Hui Tang, Ying-Ling Chen, John S. Gero Jul 2012

The Influence Of Design Methods On The Design Process: Effect Of Use Of Scenario, Brainstorming, And Synectics On Designing, Hsien-Hui Tang, Ying-Ling Chen, John S. Gero

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents the results of protocol analyses of collaborative design sessions to examine whether the use of different design methods influences the design process. Nine collaborative design sessions using brainstorming, scenario, synectics were analyzed using the function-behavior-structure ontology. The frequencies and distributions of percentages of design issues and design processes were statistically analyzed to determine differences in the design processes caused by the use of different design methods. The results indicate that the use of different design methods influences the design process and the differences appear early on in the design sessions. Brainstorming was more oriented toward functional thinking. …

Identifying And Attributing Similar Traces With Greatest Common Factor Analysis, Fred Cohen Jun 2012

Identifying And Attributing Similar Traces With Greatest Common Factor Analysis, Fred Cohen

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper presents an algorithm for comparing large numbers of traces to each other and identifying and presenting groups of traces with similar features. It is applied to forensic analysis in which groups of similar traces are automatically identified and presented so that attribution and other related claims may be asserted, and independently confirmed or refuted. The approach of this paper is to identify an approximate algorithm that will find a large subset of greatest common factor similar groups of arbitrary factors in far less time and space than an exact algorithm using examiner-provided selection criteria for factor definition.

Reliability Of The Mean Length Of Utterance Measure In Samples Of Children's Language, Katherine Marie Bigelow Jun 2012

Reliability Of The Mean Length Of Utterance Measure In Samples Of Children's Language, Katherine Marie Bigelow

Theses and Dissertations

Mean length of utterance (MLU) is widely used in child language sample analysis as a way to quantify language development. The current study examines the split-half reliability of MLU and two alternative measures: MLU2 and median length of utterance (MdLU). The effects of utterance segmentation into phonological units (P-units) or communication units (C-units) on reliability were also studied. Sixty conversational child language samples were used which included ten children with language impairment. All measures were found to have high levels of split-half reliability, with MLU and MLU2 having higher levels of reliability than MdLU. There was no significant difference between …

Evaluation In Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Benjamin L. Mcmurry Jun 2012

Evaluation In Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Benjamin L. Mcmurry

Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation of Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) needs to be scrutinized according to the same standards of evaluation as other professional materials. Evaluation can be divided into two distinct, yet similar, categories: formal (following a prescribed evaluation model) and informal. The aim of this dissertation is two-fold. The first purpose is to benefit the field of CALL by situating CALL evaluation in the context of frameworks used formal evaluation. The second purpose is to discover informal evaluation practices of CALL practitioners. First, with regard to formal evaluation of CALL materials, practices and insights from the field of evaluation would help CALL …

Health And Social Care For Older Persons From Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds : Australian Policy And Practice, Helen Bartlett Jun 2012

Health And Social Care For Older Persons From Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds : Australian Policy And Practice, Helen Bartlett

APIAS-TSAO-ILC Symposium for Junior Researchers on Active Ageing 2012

Introduction

In an increasingly globalised world, the challenges of meeting the health and social needs of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds is becoming increasingly important, with the World Health Organisation stating that designing for diversity is a primary characteristic of an age friendly city (World Health Organization [WHO], 2007). In Australia, the importance of meeting the needs of CALD older people has been recognised at all levels of government and is one of the features of the current proposed Australian Government aged care reforms (Chenoweth, Jeon, Goff & Burke, 2006; Commonwealth of Australia, 2012; Radermacher, Karunarathna, …

Trans-Spatiality As The Horizon Of The Coming Community: Ethico-Ontology And Aesthetics In Asian Immigrant Literature, Dae-Joong Kim Jun 2012

Trans-Spatiality As The Horizon Of The Coming Community: Ethico-Ontology And Aesthetics In Asian Immigrant Literature, Dae-Joong Kim

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study centers on the potential scope and significance of trans-spatiality as a new literary concept. I employ the concept of trans-spatiality as a means of understanding Asian immigrants’ transnational experiences as represented by Asian immigrant writers in the Anglophone world. Trans-spatiality is a grounding term and methodological orientation, and its scope is relational and appositional. Thus, previous studies such as postcolonialism, cosmopolitanism, transnationalism, diaspora studies, and globalization are related to trans-spatiality, but, in this dissertation, I strictly limit its use to an ethico-ontological and aesthetic understanding of Asian immigrant writers’ literary works. For this methodology, I explore and analyze …

The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Working Successfully With Young Learners" And "Working Successfully With Very Young Learners", Heidi Healy

Theses and Dissertations

Many thousands of people with varying degrees of preparation teach English as a second or foreign language to many millions of people around the world. Some of these teachers are novice, volunteer teachers, who have not received any professional-level training. These novice teachers help to meet the demand for English teachers by often teaching for little remuneration or in non-ideal teaching conditions. These teachers can benefit from receiving training in how to teach English as a foreign language. Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTRTESOL) is a program that is being created to provide …

The collapse of the Bronze Age Harappan, one of the earliest urban civilizations, remains an enigma. Urbanism flourished in the western region of the Indo-Gangetic Plain for approximately 600 y, but since approximately 3,900 y ago, the total settled area and settlement sizes declined, many sites were abandoned, and a significant shift in site numbers and density towards the east is recorded. We report morphologic and chronologic evidence indicating that fluvial landscapes in Harappan territory became remarkably stable during the late Holocene as aridification intensified in the region after approximately 5,000 BP. Upstream on the alluvial plain, the large Himalayan …

First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich

PPRI Digital Library

The United States government has adopted new approaches to counter violent extremist organizations around the world. “Soft security” and development programs include focused educational training for groups vulnerable to terrorist recruitment, norm messaging through local radio programming, and job creation in rural communities. This article evaluates the effectiveness of one set of these multi-vectored, community-level programs through analysis of data from 200 respondents in two similar, neighboring cities in northern Mali, Africa. The data show that residents in Timbuktu who were exposed to the programming for up to five years displayed measurably altered civic behavior and listening patterns in comparison …

The Effect Of L1 Orthography On The Oral Reading Of Adult English Language Learners, Kristin Lems Jun 2012

The Effect Of L1 Orthography On The Oral Reading Of Adult English Language Learners, Kristin Lems

Faculty Publications

A descriptive study of the timed oral reading of 232 literate adult English language learners (ELLs) in a post-secondary academic program found a relationship between the proximity of their L1 orthography to English and their performance in a timed oral reading. The scores on the students’ final exams and final listening exams, on the other hand, did not correlate with their first language orthography. The author concludes that for literate ELLs, L1 orthography exerts an influence on oral reading in English, and therefore should be factored in when designing assessments that employ such a method.
