The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick
The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick
Theses and Dissertations
Developing reading fluency in a first language (L1) is a topic that has received a considerable amount of attention. Developing reading fluency in a second language (L2), however, has received relatively little attention (Grabe, 2009). Anderson (2008) defines reading fluency as "reading at an appropriate rate with adequate comprehension." For adult ESL learners, Anderson suggests a minimum rate of 200 wpm with at least 70% comprehension. Previous studies that have been conducted on L2 reading fluency focus primarily on reading rate development. This study seeks to combine rate development and comprehension development to effectively foster L2 reading fluency. Doing so …

Come As You Are, As I Want You To Be: Grunge/Riot Grrrl Pedagogy And Identity Construction In The Second Year Writing Program, Rory J. Callais
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A look at how artists in the grunge and Riot Grrrl movements constructed public identities that typically appealed to the economic, cultural, and social conditions of the early 1990s. These public personas -- perceived as “honest” -- were defined by negotiation with mainstream culture, the notion of the “confessional,” and gender construction. By examining how these identities were constructed, composition students can see how cultural influences mediate their own identity construction. A “grunge/Riot Grrrl” pedagogy is proposed that encourages students to look at how identities are constructed across a multimedia landscape, reflecting the way grunge and Riot Grrrl artists built …
English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown
English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the thirty-two years since the Islamic Revolution occurred in Iran, economic and cultural globalization have affected the role of English in multiple domains in the country. Within the domain of advertising, shifts have occurred throughout the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persian scholars have attributed the source of these shifts to tension between local and global identities and to shifts in government advertising policy. This paper explores a data set of 335 advertisements taken from magazines from the period 2006–2008. We contrast borrowings and language display and explore language use in the six parts of the advertisements. …

Islamophobia, Euro-Islam, Islamism And Post-Islamism: Changing Patterns Of Secularism In Europe, Peter O'Brien
Islamophobia, Euro-Islam, Islamism And Post-Islamism: Changing Patterns Of Secularism In Europe, Peter O'Brien
Political Science Faculty Research
Modern secularism, as theorized by prominent liberal philosophers such as John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas, prescribes that the state should treat all religions equally on condition that they and their adherents relinquish their theocratic aspirations and recognize the political sovereignty and superiority of man-made law. Convinced that the secular bargain undermines the moral virtue of society and its members, a small, fragmented, but nevertheless conspicuous number of Islamists in Europe prefers to observe Islamic law in all walks of life, private and public. Alarmed by Islamists and informed by Orientalist readings of Islam, an increasingly vehement and vociferous contingent of …
Family Intervention Strategies: Support For Struggling Readers, Rachel Hildreth
Family Intervention Strategies: Support For Struggling Readers, Rachel Hildreth
Education Masters
This study examined the success of family intervention strategies to support literacy development among children who are struggling readers through daily activities and routines. Research followed a family participating in a shared family literacy intervention model, targeted participant/student being a ten year old male over four tutoring sessions. Data was collected through parent/student questionnaire, field notes/reflection, focus group and parent interview. By engaging the student as a learner through shared family experiences, daily routines and activities were used as literacy learning opportunities to increase student performance and the family was able to extend literacy strategies into daily routines. With family …

Generality Of Treatment Effects: Evaluating Elementary-Aged Students' Abilities To Generalize And Maintain Fluency Gains Of A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Bridget Hier
Psychology - Theses
Although writing ability is a skill that has been argued to be equally important as reading skills in the development of early literacy and is necessary for academic success (Berninger et al., 2006; Graham, MacArthur, & Fitzgerald, 2007), national estimates of students' writing ability in the United States indicate that in 2002, 72% of elementary-aged students were unable to write with grade-level proficiency (Persky, Daane, & Jin, 2003). This finding presents a clear need for empirical, evidence-based interventions that aim to improve students' writing skills, and performance feedback is one type of intervention that has been shown to do so …

The Effect Of Inquiry Learning On The Academic Achievement And Bilingual Verbal Cognition Of Young Bilingual Students, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain), Heidi A. Smith
Teacher Education
The issues that prompt this study are based on current research indicating the positive effects of inquiry learning on the cognitive development of children. The purpose of this case study was to understand the effects of inquiry learning on the academic achievement and bilingual verbal cognition of 5th grade bilingual students in a French/English dual immersion program. The treatment group of students completed research projects through a guided inquiry learning approach, while the control group experienced the traditional problem-solving research approach. Empirical findings reported a significant mean increase in mathematics achievement, bilingual verbal cognitive ability, higher motivation to learn …
The Fairy Language: Language Maintenance And Social-Ecological Resilience Among The Tarali Of Tichurong, Nepal, Maya Daurio
The Fairy Language: Language Maintenance And Social-Ecological Resilience Among The Tarali Of Tichurong, Nepal, Maya Daurio
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Sahar Tara is a community in Dolpa, Nepal, one of three villages in the world where the Kaike language is spoken. Kaike speakers are called Tarali. The perpetuation of the Kaike language is attributable to the resilience of Tarali livelihood systems and their continued attachment to place. Using informal interviews, participatory mapping, and participant observation, this research engaged Kaike speakers in an exploration of the relationships among their language, environment, and knowledge systems. Tarali negotiate their social and spiritual lives through highly developed adaptive knowledge about the environment, mitigated by natural forces, deities, and intimate historical ties to the land. …

Land, Livelihood And Rana Tharu Identity Transformations In Far-Western Nepal, Lai Ming Lam
Land, Livelihood And Rana Tharu Identity Transformations In Far-Western Nepal, Lai Ming Lam
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper examines the interlocking relationships between land, livelihood and the identity transformations of Rana Tharus in far western Nepal. I argue that the formation and transformation of ethnicity is not simply shaped by social changes specifically as a strategic tool for sharing more political power. It also serves as an important currency for the people to achieve a better livelihood. The nature of ethnicity is in fluidity and artificiality. While ideologies concerning ‘Sanskritization’ (the social mobility of non-high caste groups by emulating Hindu ideologies and practices) and ‘Indigenousness’ (social movements that are anti-Hindu and anti-caste) have dominated the discussion …

A Pilot Study On The Use Of Nonlinguistic Concrete Materials And Drama To Aid Vocabulary Learning For Third-Grade Students, Kerry P. Holmes, Stacy V. Holmes, Blair Ellenburg
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
This article reports on the effects of the use of nonlinguistic concrete materials and dramatization on student vocabulary learning in eight third-grade classrooms. It follows a preceding study which determined that the use of nonlinguistic concrete materials and drama in K-3 classrooms for vocabulary instruction was minimal and varied across content areas. The results of the pilot study showed that the use of nonlinguistic materials significantly improved vocabulary learning for normally-progressing students (p=0.00185), but had little or no effect on students in reading intervention classrooms. The study was quasi-experimental in nature and utilized six third-grade classrooms of normally-progressing students and …

Benefits Of Read-Alouds In Early Childhood Literacy Development, Megan R. Mills
Education Masters
This study examined the benefits of read alouds and early childhood literacy development. Research was conducted in preschool classrooms that use whole group interactive read alouds, as part of the daily literacy instruction. Data was collected through observation, teacher and student questionnaires, and examination and analysis of student work samples, in response to the daily read-aloud. The findings show that interactive read-alouds are highly beneficial for early childhood literacy development resulting in increased engagement, strengthened reading and writing skills, and the students’ abilities to make connections. In order to promote student interaction during learning, teachers must motivate their students by …

The Culture Boundary: How Awareness Informs Teaching Practice, Angela Richardson
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper I discuss the value of exploring student culture through ongoing reflective processes for effective and responsible language teaching. I reflect on my own experience of teaching in a foreign language context for the first time, and discuss how developing cultural awareness helped me move from a place of frustration to understanding, and how a change in attitude and teaching approach impacted my relationships and significantly improved the quality of teaching and learning in my classroom. Using Pat Moran’s ‘Cultural Knowings’ framework as a guide, I reflect on my personal transformation while working in South Korea and report …
Not You/Like You, With You: Toward A Praxis Of Love, Learning, And Liberation In Teaching Efl Writing — On Zombies, De-Colonial Feminisms, And Freire In Efl Contact Zones, Jessmaya Morales
MA TESOL Collection
This paper explores EFL writing as a critical contact zone in which identity and subjectivity are found, denied, contested, de/constructed and occupied. The author opens with an account of a dream, utilized as a metaphor to examine EFL learning through the analytical lens of Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The paper’s first section is a self-reflexive discussion of Freire’s pedagogy and why his unambiguous analyses of power, subjectivity, and the “banking system of education” are vital to the field of ELT. In the second section, the author discusses subjectivity, identity, and intersectionality as rooted in the work of …

Cuisenaire Rods: Pedagogical And Relational Instruments For Language Learning, Sevilay Akarcay
Cuisenaire Rods: Pedagogical And Relational Instruments For Language Learning, Sevilay Akarcay
MA TESOL Collection
Cuisenaire Rods are pedagogical and relational instruments with great potential for exploring the way a language works. With their flexibility and simplicity, they allow the students to focus on the process of learning; helping them notice patterns, make associations, and engage in a social and personal relation with the language and deepening their awareness of themselves as learners. The Cuisenaire Rods’ potential for creating simplicity within complexity enables a way of working with language that engages the playful and creative powers of the users. In the introductory part of the paper, the author explores Caleb Gattegno’s approach to learning and …
A Meta-Analytic Review Of Cooperative Learning Practices In Higher Education: A Human Communication Perspective, William Patrick Huddy
A Meta-Analytic Review Of Cooperative Learning Practices In Higher Education: A Human Communication Perspective, William Patrick Huddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The phrase cooperative learning refers to a pedagogical learning and teaching technique in use in schools from kindergarten through higher education. The technique involves the structuring of an active classroom environment with students working in groups to discover, solve, and at its basic, provide a framework for dialogue and conversation. Cooperative learning is grounded in the development of a theory of social interdependence (Morton Deutsch) which states that individuals, working in groups, can in most cases provide for greater productivity and ideas than individuals working alone. The development of cooperative learning was greatly expanded in the late 1960’s and early …

Long Pair Isograms, Jeff Grant
Word Ways
Darryl Francis's article New Pair Isograms in the February 2012 Word Ways brought back memories from my early days of dabbling with word play. After discovering the beautiful symmetry of words like HORSESHOER and INTESTINES in Language on Vacation (Dmitri Borgmann, 1965), I spend many hours scouring the Oxford English Dictionary for new examples. Imagine my elation on finding CHARACTERETH and INACCIDENTATED.
