Argus: Radiation Effects Modeling On A University Nanosat, Michael Swartwout
Small Satellite Conference
The Air Force Research Laboratory’s University Nanosat Program (UNP) was established in 1999 to train students at dozens of universities in the space systems engineering process and provide space flight opportunities for a few. The NASA Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa) program was established in 2010 to provide flight opportunities for dozens of university missions, but does not directly support student training. Then a curious thing happened: several UNP schools were selected for ELaNa launches. Then, a more curious thing happened: everyone thought that this was a great idea! This is a great idea, because: 1) it provides opportunities for …

The Effects Of Technology On Interpersonal Relationships Among Rowan University Students Ages 18 - 25, Michelle Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to (a) determine how young adults are communicating with each other and (b) understand what is driving them to communicate using different methods of communication. After completing a literature review, the researcher conducted primary research using survey instruments and interviews. What people are trying to communicate determines how they are going to relay messages. The urgency of a message affects how respondents answer the message.

Peeking Inside Pandora’S Box: One University’S Journey Into The Redesign Of Teacher Educator Preparation, Frank Dykes, Brenda K. Gilliam, Joanna Neel, Kathleen Everling
Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the last two decades, there have been various calls for reform in teacher education programs to address the needs of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and students with disabilities. Consequently, many teacher education preparation programs are reviewing and redesigning their programs to meet the needs of the teacher of the 21st century. This manuscript will describe the development and implementation of a new certification program that integrates preservice teacher preparation, Special Education and English as a second language into a 123 hour degree program.
Computer-Based Modeling Of K-12 Faculty Activities: A Case Study, Amanda Rose Kyker
Computer-Based Modeling Of K-12 Faculty Activities: A Case Study, Amanda Rose Kyker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis sought to lay the foundation for an application for tracking K-12 teacher activities. Its primary contribution is a descriptive model of K-12 activities. The work's starting point, the Faculty Activities System project, is an ETSU initiative that seeks to produce a tool for university-level academic accountabilities management. It was possible to adapt the FAS project's data model for K-12 activities. The resulting model was validated by experts in the field of education and teachers and administrators across Tennessee.
A second strategy for model validation, using national and state legislation and expert recommendations, determined that the model did well …

An Ethnographic Study Of The Moth Detroit Storyslam, Catherine Jo Janssen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Moth Detroit StorySLAM is one of many storytelling events staged in urban bar environments. Unlike the increasingly aged audiences attending the National Storytelling Festival and similar story festivals, the Detroit StorySLAM consistently yields at capacity crowds of college students and young professionals.
Participants were informally interviewed during the September, October, and November slams of 2010 and the January 2011 slam. In addition to conducting these interviews, the researcher was a participant observer—throwing her name into the hat and being twice called to the stage. Data are presented as a thick description organized according to Richard Bauman's 6 situational factors …

Translating Learners, Researchers, And Qualitative Approaches Through Investigations Of Students’ Experiences In School, Alison Cook-Sather
Translating Learners, Researchers, And Qualitative Approaches Through Investigations Of Students’ Experiences In School, Alison Cook-Sather
Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article uses the conceptual framework offered by ‘translation’ to argue for transforming students into authorities and agents in research on educational practice. Drawing on various definitions of translation and highlighting the influence of recent feminist perspectives on translation studies, the article presents two cases that illustrate how learners can be translated into co-researchers of educational experiences, researchers translated into partners with students in making meaning through the research process, and qualitative research’s approaches and modes of presenting findings translated into new versions of those processes and products.

Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe
Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
In the United States (U.S.), immigrants are among the fastest growing populations of all communities. Today, they comprise approximately 11% of the total U.S. population. Forty-three percent of immigrants are without insurance. They are also associated with higher numbers of untreated medical conditions, fewer interactions with the health care system, and receiving health care through emergency departments (ER). The consequences of these practices include increases in health care costs, changes from preventive care to emergency treatment, delays in identifying illnesses until later, and higher disease prevalence. Case managers are frequently faced with immigrants' concerns regarding access to care and prevention …
The Mental Lexicon In Students Of Non-Spoken Languages: A Case Study With Ancient Greek And Latin, Randall C. Meister
The Mental Lexicon In Students Of Non-Spoken Languages: A Case Study With Ancient Greek And Latin, Randall C. Meister
Student Works
The unique pedagogical circumstances and uses of non-spoken languages (such as Ancient Greek and Latin) offer other facets to current models of L2 mental lexicon, which, up until this point in academic dialogue, have focused on bilinguals, who produce their language. While empirical evidence from an array of studies (see Cielslicka-Ratajczak, 1994) favors an integrated system of interwoven phonological, semantic, and categorical information all working together to influence production and comprehension, the elements of L2 organization within the context of non-spoken ancient languages remains underexplored, yet may offer further evidence for the organization of mental L2 lexical. My current study …
Dental Microwear And Diet Change During The Greek Bronze And Iron Age In Coastal East Lokris, Greece, J Rocco De Gregory
Dental Microwear And Diet Change During The Greek Bronze And Iron Age In Coastal East Lokris, Greece, J Rocco De Gregory
Theses and Dissertations
This research utilizes two analytical methods to examine the dental microwear of two skeletal samples from East Lokris, Greece. The samples are from the Bronze age/Early Iron age sites of Mitrou and Tragana Agia Triada. The samples were tested according to various temporal and geographic designations in an attempt to determine if any differences in dietary constituent could be discerned from their dental microwear signatures. Both traditional dental microwear analysis using a scanning electron microscope and dental microwear texture analysis employing scale sensitive fractal analysis and a Sensofar Plµ Confocal Profiler were used. The results of analysis for both methods …

Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin
Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This paper focuses on the contradictions and tensions inherent in self-identification and oppositional identities. In the past twenty years, Hapa has emerged as an oppositional identity used by mixed-race Asian Americans. While many scholars have noted the tension of the term for its linguistic appropriation from the Native Hawaiian language, fewer scholars have concentrated their examinations on the ways in which the term reproduces the very notions it aims to subvert. This paper concentrates on the areas of contradiction inherent in finding and using "a word of power" and making that word into a recognizable identity.
