Fulgencio Batista's Economic Policies, 1952 - 1958, Michael Patrick Mcguigan
Fulgencio Batista's Economic Policies, 1952 - 1958, Michael Patrick Mcguigan
Open Access Dissertations
Fulgencio Batista ruled Cuba from March 10, 1952 to December 31, 1958 and initiated the most ambitious and expensive government economic stimulus programs in the island’s history. He took power by military coup and overthrew the constitutionally elected Auténtico President Carlos Prío Soccorás. Batista immediately took credit for restoring security, order, progress, and honest government to the island. However, he lacked an official public mandate to rule acquired through an election, therefore, he sought acceptance by appealing to Cubans’ economic needs. In the months following the coup, Batista decided on a stimulus plan that in many ways followed the recommendations …

"That's What Families Do": Rewards And Challenges Of Informal Kinship Care, Betsy Hay
"That's What Families Do": Rewards And Challenges Of Informal Kinship Care, Betsy Hay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Informal kinship caregivers take on the responsibility of raising a relative's children in situations where those children cannot remain with their parents and are not in the custody of child welfare. The phenomenon is increasing; however it is difficult to obtain information from these families because of the difficulty locating them. As a result, there is limited research on this specific group of kinship care families. The purpose of this study was exploratory, using qualitative methods to gather information from informal kinship caregivers about their experiences caring for a relative's children, with a focus on the rewards and challenges within …

Reverse Regulatory Arbitrage: An Auction Approach To Regulatory Assignments, M. Todd Henderson, Frederick Tung
Reverse Regulatory Arbitrage: An Auction Approach To Regulatory Assignments, M. Todd Henderson, Frederick Tung
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
In the years before the Financial Crisis, banks got to pick their regulators, engaging in a form of regulatory arbitrage that we now know was a race to the bottom. We propose to turn the tables on the banks by allowing regulators, specifically, bank examiners, to choose the banks they regulate. We call this "reverse regulatory arbitrage," and we think it can help improve regulatory outcomes. Building on our prior work that proposes to pay bank examiners for performance—by giving them financial incentives to avoid bank failures—we argue that bank supervisory assignments should be set through an auction among examiners. …

Organizational Settings And Profiles Of Servant Leadership, Dalton Elder Mook
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study sought to determine the perception of servant leadership in business-model organizational settings and to assess the potential significance between servant leadership perception and variables, both demographic and others, related to volunteer service. Using the Servant Leadership Scale (Liden et al., 2008), a 28-item survey, combined with 9 additional questions, individuals in five organizational settings in the Southeast region of the United States of America were queried via an online survey method distributed by email. Respondents from each organization reported an overall perception of servant leadership according to the seven-dimension means of emotional healing, creating value for the community, …

Creating Access To Quality Legal Representation – The Queen's Counsel (Re)Appears In Singapore, Kwan Ho Lau
Creating Access To Quality Legal Representation – The Queen's Counsel (Re)Appears In Singapore, Kwan Ho Lau
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Litigants coming up against a large banking institution or corporation in Singapore have not always been able to procure quality legal representation. The larger law firms there, with their established dispute resolution practices and stables of Senior Counsel, are often unable or unwilling to act in litigation against their institutional clients. This article investigates the extent of the problem and the Ministry of Law’s soluion of easing the criteria for ad hoc admission of Queen’s Counsel in Singapore. The author then looks, in some detail, at the factors that a court might consider in any foreign lawyer’s application for admission. …
The Use Of Life History Collage To Explore Learning Related To The Enactment Of Social Consciousness In Female Nonprofit Leaders, Susan R. Seymour
The Use Of Life History Collage To Explore Learning Related To The Enactment Of Social Consciousness In Female Nonprofit Leaders, Susan R. Seymour
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper advances a novel qualitative research approach using life history collage. Rather that utilizing an interview protocol to enter into a participant’s story, life history collage invites participants to create a longitudinal collage of significant life events around a theme such as learning, relationships, or identity. The longitudinal nature of the collage situates and prioritizes significant life events with images, words, and elements chosen to represent events and circumstances. Each image within the collage contains rich and nuanced storylines that invite exploration by both researcher and participant. Meanings and subtexts are revealed as participants describe their collage and the …
The Constitutional Jurisprudence Of Justice Kennedy On Speech, Charles D. Kelso, R. Randal Kelso
The Constitutional Jurisprudence Of Justice Kennedy On Speech, Charles D. Kelso, R. Randal Kelso
San Diego Law Review
Justice Kennedy's basic principles in free speech cases are supporting political freedom, supporting individual autonomy, and protecting freedom to teach, learn, and innovate. Given these principles, his opinions in free speech cases protect free speech from government regulation unless the government can provide strong reasons for any restrictive action and show that the means it has chosen to carry out its purposes are closely tailored to its goals. At a minimum, judicial review is by strict scrutiny for content-based regulations and intermediate review for content-neutral time, place, and manner regulations. In some cases, Justice Kennedy has indicated a preference for …
