Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2012

Becoming Sons And Daughters At God's Right Hand: King Benjamin's Rhetorical Wordplay On His Own Name, Matthew L. Bowen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal sonship is a key theme of Mosiah 1–6, including King Benjamin’s seminal address at the temple in Zarahemla (Mosiah 2–5) on the occasion of his son Mosiah’s enthronement. Benjamin, however, caps this covenant sermon, not with an assertion of his son’s royal status and privileges, but with a radical declaration of his people’s royal rebirth (or adoption) as “ the children of Christ, his sons and his daughters” (Mosiah 5:7) and their potential enthronement at God’s “ right hand” (5:9). Similar to rhetorical wordplay involving proper names found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other ancient texts, …

The Divine Feminine A Feminist Study Of Goddess Appropriation Within The Jewish Renewal Movement And Western Interpretations Of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Zoe Rayor Jan 2012

The Divine Feminine A Feminist Study Of Goddess Appropriation Within The Jewish Renewal Movement And Western Interpretations Of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Zoe Rayor

Theses & ETDs

Feminist spirituality is a contemporary religious movement created in order to abolish the harmful remnants of explicit and subtle patriarchal influence within various religious traditions. To counteract the ubiquitous androcentricity found within many religions, along with the pervasive masculine notions of God, practitioners of feminist spirituality integrate a feminine divine figure, or goddess, into their religious retinue. This thesis examines the religious phenomenon of feminine divine appropriation through two case studies. The first chapter explores the contemporary Jewish Renewal movement and its appropriation of the Kabbalistic divine feminine figure, Shekhinah. The second chapter analyzes Western feminists' and scholar-practitioners' use of …

Journal of Hate Studies

I am pleased to offer you Volume 10 of the Journal of Hate Studies (JHS), which is devoted to the theme “Hate and Political Discourse.” This is, in many ways, a special volume, and 2012-2013 is a special year too. We celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Gonzaga University, the Centennial Anniversary of the Gonzaga University School of Law, the 15th Anniversary of the Institute for Hate Studies, and the 10th Anniversary of the JHS. We mark these special occasions with the present volume and a special symposium held in Washington, DC in September 2012 to accompany this volume.

The Lessons Of Living Gardens And Jewish Process Theology For Authorship And Moral Rights, Roberta R. Kwall Jan 2012

The Lessons Of Living Gardens And Jewish Process Theology For Authorship And Moral Rights, Roberta R. Kwall

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article examines the issues of authorship, fixation, and moral rights through the lens of Jewish Process Theology. Jewish Process Theology is an application of Process Thought, which espouses a developmental and fluid perspective with respect to creation and creativity. This discipline offers important insights for how to shape and enforce copyright law. The issue of "change" and authorship is more important now than ever before given how the digital age is revolutionizing the way the world thinks about authorship. By incorrectly maintaining that a living garden is not capable of copyright protection since it is unfixed, changeable, and partially …

The Origin Of The Eschatological Feast As A Wedding Banquet In The Synoptic Gospels: An Intertextual Study, Phillip J. Long Jan 2012

The Origin Of The Eschatological Feast As A Wedding Banquet In The Synoptic Gospels: An Intertextual Study, Phillip J. Long

Dissertations

The Problem. The problem this dissertation seeks to address is the origins of the wedding banquet imagery in the teaching of Jesus. Frequently, scholars will state that the image of a wedding banquet was a common messianic image in the first century. However, other than Isa 25:6-8, sources for the image of a banquet for the messianic age in the Hebrew Bible are sparse. Yet the image of a banquet clearly appears in the Synoptic Gospels in both the actions of Jesus as well as his teaching. Because the metaphor of a wedding banquet is not found in the literature …

Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic Jan 2012

Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My dissertation examines the relationship between Jewish identity and performance in non- Jewish novelists' portrayals of tableaux vivants, or living pictures. As a performance genre imported from Europe, the tableau vivant was a frequent element of nineteenth-century American fiction and a popular pastime of middle- and upper-class Americans in the 1800s. Since living pictures were ideologically coded---in general, designed to motivate viewers, mostly women, to adopt the patriarchal values invoked through the performance, such as chastity, purity, and piety---scholarship on the application of tableaux vivants primarily focuses on gender and class. My dissertation contributes to these discussions by highlighting the …
