The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women And Synagogue Ritual As A Case Study, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall Dec 2012

The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women And Synagogue Ritual As A Case Study, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall

Cardozo Law Review

This Article develops an original cultural analysis paradigm with significant implications for understanding the relationship between law and culture. It also illustrates how this relationship should inform the normative application of areas of law in which tensions exist between modern sensibilities and traditional practices steeped in cultural perspectives from other times. Indeed, the negotiation between preservation and change confronts all ancient cultural traditions in modernity. The specific application invoked in this Article concerns the issue of women being called to read publicly from the Torah, a subject of serious academic debate among observant Jews. The analysis demonstrates that the virtually …

Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon Sep 2012

Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

For some, the connection between Jews and athletics might seem far-fetched. But in fact, as is highlighted by the fourteen chapters in this collection, Jews have been participating in—and thinking about—sports for more than two thousand years.

The articles in this volume scan a wide chronological range: from the Hellenistic period (first century BCE) to the most recent basketball season. The range of athletes covered is equally broad: from participants in Roman-style games to wrestlers, boxers, fencers, baseball players, and basketball stars. The authors of these essays, many of whom actively participate in athletics themselves, raise a number of intriguing …

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs Sep 2012

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs

Reports from the President’s Office

Last spring I announced at a faculty meeting that a major theme for our campus this year would be diversity and inclusion. I’d like to add equity to that framework as well. This year I hope that we can develop a shared understanding of these topics and some goals to which we can aspire as a community.

Five years ago Gettysburg College established a set of four strategic directions to guide our planning and decision-making: Engagement, Distinction, Access, and Connection. At that time we described Access as our aspiration to “increase the diversity of the student body and create a …

The City Of Man, European Émigrés, And The Genesis Of Postwar Conservative Thought, Adi Gordon, Udi Greenberg Aug 2012

The City Of Man, European Émigrés, And The Genesis Of Postwar Conservative Thought, Adi Gordon, Udi Greenberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

This article explores the forgotten manifesto The City of Man: A Declaration on World Democracy, which was composed in 1940 by a group of prominent American and European anti-isolationist intellectuals, including Thomas Mann, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Hermann Broch. Written in response to the victories of Nazi Germany, the manifesto declared that the United States had a new global responsibility not only to lead the war against fascism and Marxism, but also to establish a global order of peace and democracy under U.S. hegemony. Moreover, the authors of the manifesto claimed that such an order would have to be based on …

Abigail, Krystal Joy Grant

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abigail is a chamber opera for three singers and eight instruments. It is the story of a godly woman who responds with wisdom and grace to the abuses of a drunken husband and the vengeance of a raging soldier. The hour-long piece is designed to be performed in a small or black box theater. The music spans modal and whole tone sonorities as the performers interact in the manner of a chamber ensemble. | 161 pages

Not Christian, But Nonetheless Qualified: The Secular Workplace - Whose Hardship?, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper examines the uneven history of the U.S. as a haven for religious freedom and links it to the challenges being confronted today in incorporating into U.S. society the influx of immigrants from non-Christian, non-Western cultures. Focusing on the workplace, the author argues that non-Christian employees are at a disadvantage in the so-called secular U.S. workplace because it in truth represents a bastion of secularized Christianity. That is to say, an institutionalization of Christianity in the civil laws and public institutions of the U.S. has allowed religiously embedded practices to masquerade as secular norms. To overcome the Christian presumption …

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood Jun 2012

Rembrandt Van Rijn's Jewish Bride: Depicting Female Power In The Dutch Republic Through The Notion Of Nation Building, Nan T. Atwood

Theses and Dissertations

Many art historians have debated the identity of the couple in Rembrandt's the Jewish Bride (1667). The painting is most often identified as an Old Testament theme. This is due to the seventeenth-century Dutch practice of using biblical "types" as ideal models for the structuring of the new republic founded on the Israelite ideology of nation building. Three of these biblical female types that have been separately associated with the female figure in the Jewish Bride are, Rebecca, Ruth, and Esther. As these biblical women represented different notions of power through their respective narratives, this thesis argues that Rembrandt deliberately …

The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson Jun 2012

The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eruvin are an innovative solution to the logistical “problem” of carrying on the weekly Sabbath. Boundaries that symbolically extend the walls of private homes into the public sphere, eruvin allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outside of their homes on the Sabbath, a seemingly simple act that would otherwise be prohibited. Constructed according to intricate Rabbinic specifications, eruvin use existing architectural elements such as walls, train tracks, roadways and telephone wires, as well as natural features like rivers to create a continuous boundary. This paper will examine the theoretical significance of creating such a space. My argument maintains that beyond …

Discussion Board Posts About Jewish Interfaith Relationships And Intermarriage : Romantic Love, Independence, Concern For Children, And Ethnicity., Miriam Kan 1981- May 2012

Discussion Board Posts About Jewish Interfaith Relationships And Intermarriage : Romantic Love, Independence, Concern For Children, And Ethnicity., Miriam Kan 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Following previous studies on the rate of increase and behavior of the American Jewish intermarried, this study sought to determine what individuals are discussing about Jewish interfaith relationships and intermarriage. Four scholarly issues were identified as topics of concern: romantic love, independence, concern for children, and ethnicity. Two Internet discussion boards, interfaithfamily.com and joi.org, were analyzed using the four topics as a basis for narrative analysis. The messages analyzed on interfaithfamily.com and joi.org showed that these four topics are not restricted to the scholarly literature, but are also discussed in public among individuals concerned with Jewish interfaith relationships and intermarriage …
