Open Source Remote Sensing:Introspect And Prospect, Sanggoo Kang, Hee Young Yoo, Kiwon Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
It is noteworthy that open source applications have been developed and studied in various fields as well as remote sensing field. Open sources for GIS have long history related to open standards over three decades, but those of remote sensing do relatively short. Moreover, there are still no summary reports for open sources for remote sensing. In this study, we summarized characteristics of open source applications for remotely sensed image processing and discussed their strengths and weaknesses at first. Based on the summary, two open source applications for InSAR Processing and Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis are practically implemented to introspect …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011 triggered an extremely destructive tsunami that hit the Tohoku region of Japan severely. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishes of Japan, Tohoku accounted for 27.59% of Japan’s rice yield in 2010. It is an impact to a country that relies on rice as its main food source. This paper utilizes remote sensing techniques to estimate the disaster losses in rice field and yield in Fukushima and Miyagi, the most severely damaged coastal prefectures of the Tohoku region, by using a developed Rice field Identification and riCe …

An Object-Oriented Analysis For Characterizing The Rainfall-Induced Shallow Landslide, Kuan-Tsung Chang, Jin-King Liu, Chu-I Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Landslides are natural phenomena for the dynamic balance of the earth's surface. Because of frequent occurrences of typhoons and earthquakes in Taiwan, mass movements are common threats to people's lives. In this paper, the interpretation of knowledge is quantified as recognition criteria. Multisource high-resolution data, for example, a SPOT satellite image, 20 m × 20 m Digital Terrain Model (DTM) reduced from Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data, and aerial orthophotos were used to construct the feature space for landslide analysis. Landslides were recognized by an objectoriented method combining edge-based segmentation and a Supported Vector Machine (SVM) method. The classification …

A Daoist Model For A Kantian Church, Stephen R. Palmquist
A Daoist Model For A Kantian Church, Stephen R. Palmquist
Comparative Philosophy
Although significant differences undoubtedly exist between Daoism and Kants philosophy, the two systems also have some noteworthy similarities. After calling attention to a few such parallels and sketching the outlines of Kants philosophy of religion, this article focuses on an often-neglected feature of the latter: the four guiding principles of what Kant calls an invisible church (universality, purity, freedom, and unchangeableness). Numerous passages from Lao Zis classic text, Dao-De-Jing, seem to uphold these same principles, thus suggesting that they can also be interpreted as core features of a Daoist philosophy of life. A crucial difference, however, is that members of …

The Quality Of Corporate Governance And The Length It Takes To Remove Apoor Performing Ceo. Does Performance Of The Former Firm Affect A Ceo's Ability To Find An Identical With A Subsequent Firm?, Huong Nguyen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract 1:
In this paper, we investigate the effects of internal corporate governance on the length it takes to remove a CEO after the initial sign of poor firm performance. We find that firms that have a better quality of internal corporate governance are quicker to remove poor-performing CEOs. This result persists after controlling for other factors that might influence the CEO removal decision.
Abstract 2:
Employing a sample of voluntary CEO turnovers selected from S&P 500 firms over the period 2004-2009, I investigate the impact prior firm performance on a CEO’s potential of being hired on an equivalent job …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Leadership In Young Children, Deborah Lee Fox
Teachers' Perceptions Of Leadership In Young Children, Deborah Lee Fox
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore how teachers described, recognized, and would potentially influence leadership behaviors in children aged 4 to 6 years. One hundred thirty-three early childhood teachers and teachers of the gifted were surveyed using a researcher-designed instrument called the Recognizing Leadership in Children (RLIC) Survey to assess if teachers could recognize leadership from classroom scenarios that were based on actual classroom observations. As part of the survey, teachers wrote how they thought they might respond to the leadership scenarios. As there is a scarcity of literature concerning children’s leadership, the results from this study contribute …
The Practical Side Of Culinary Arts Education: The Role Of Social Ability And Durable Knowledge In Culinary Arts Externships, William R. Thibodeaux
The Practical Side Of Culinary Arts Education: The Role Of Social Ability And Durable Knowledge In Culinary Arts Externships, William R. Thibodeaux
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
As externships evolved from their vocational education roots into the university setting, both the course purposes and the expectations of student changed toward deeper learning. While the students’ responsibility for gaining knowledge has increased, teaching methods designed by educators to prepare students for more critically evaluated outcomes has not evolved at the same pace. Educators still grapple over how educational design can combine the structured teacher-centered learning strategy used in university classrooms with the learner-centered approach students typically utilize in for-profit culinary workplaces.
This dissertation is about culinary externships in the urban environment. The study examined the roles, reasoning, and …

How Are American Cities Planning For Climate Change? An Evaluation Of Climate Action Planning In Chicago, Il And Portland, Or, Nicolette Jones
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Contending with a changing climate presents a necessary push for planning. Although climate change is considered a global environmental problem requiring a global commitment and trans-national action, more and more, policymakers are recognizing the vital need for action at the local level. In the US, especially in the absence of national climate legislation, many local governments have begun developing strategic plans, or climate action plans (CAPs), to address adapting to impacts of climate change and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This thesis involves case studies of Portland, OR and Chicago, IL, cities with recently adopted CAPs and with considerable recognition in …

Spatial Error Metrics And Registration For The Validation Of Numerical Oceanographic Models, Sean B. Ziegeler
Spatial Error Metrics And Registration For The Validation Of Numerical Oceanographic Models, Sean B. Ziegeler
Theses and Dissertations
Numerical oceanographic models are constantly improving and must be validated when improvements are made. One means of determining how to improve these models and performing validations is to compare model predictions to the future observed outcome, which is measured many ways, including satellite imagery. Comparisons of model forecasts to future satellite images result in error measurements. One common problem with modern oceanographic models is spatial error, i.e., the incorrect placement and shape of ocean features, rendering traditional error metrics such as mean-square and cross-correlation ineffective. Such problems are common in meteorological forecast verification as well, so the application of spatial …

A Woman Is A Dish For The Gods': Shakespeare's Use Of Myth To Criticize Patriarchy, Marissa Polascak
A Woman Is A Dish For The Gods': Shakespeare's Use Of Myth To Criticize Patriarchy, Marissa Polascak
Honors Theses
William Shakespeare's canon is famous throughout the world, studied by scholars as well as read by laymen for leisure. These scholars and laymen value Shakespeare's works for their content and form, at the same time that they criticize them for their flaws. On the surface, it is clear that Shakespeare touches on many issues in his poems and plays, such as love and war, but hidden underneath are messages that are ambiguous. These hidden messages are a product of censorship. During the Renaissance, Sir Francis Walsingham established the State apparatus which helped to protect society against counter-Reformation activists. This apparatus …
Emerging Media In 18th Century Literature: How Jane Austen Invented Facebook, Rebecca Shaver
Emerging Media In 18th Century Literature: How Jane Austen Invented Facebook, Rebecca Shaver
Honors Theses
The focus on the downfalls and misunderstandings of the Austen anthology has allowed critics to ignore her incredible ability to scientifically dissect the intricate workings of social circles and networks comprised of psychologically accurate characters and interactions. For instance, her portrayals of gender roles (heterosocial/sexual and homosocial/sexual) within those circles were so apt that they often still true today. The transcendental human nature of individuals like Emma's Emma Woodhouse and Mansfield Park's Fanny Price causes us to question how Austen amplifies and enlightens our understanding of how modern social networks, like Facebook or Twitter, stem directly from historically complex affective …

A Comparison Of Placental Tissue In The Skinks Eulamprus Tympanum And E. Quoyii, Lauren Yates
Honors Theses
The species Eulamprus tympanum and Eulamprus quoyii are viviparous skinks that are said to have a Type I placenta. This research compared histological characteristics of the oviduct during pregnancy in E. tympanum and E. quoyii and assessed whether structural features are consistent with a Type I placentation. A similarity was seen in both of these species and was not consistent with a Type I placenta. Extreme folding of the uterine tissue was observed in the early stages. An increase in glands around the later stages was observed while there was no change in blood vessel density over the course of …

Quantataive Analysis Of Relationship Between Alos Palsar Backscatter And Forest Stand Volume, Choen Kim
Quantataive Analysis Of Relationship Between Alos Palsar Backscatter And Forest Stand Volume, Choen Kim
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To estimate forest stand volume, topographic effects should be considered in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data processing, because most forests are located on mountainous areas in Korea. This paper shows how the effects on the ALOS Phased-Array L-Band SAR (PALSAR) backscatter in Kwangneung Experiment Forest can be reduced by gammanought γ 0 . Regardless of coniferous and deciduous forests, the gammanought γ 0 values are always lower compared to the sigmanought σ0 values at HH and HV polarization for 58 standwise tree volume of the fore-slope (here, the west-facing slope) and are always higher in case of far-slope (here, east-facing …

A Geomorphological Model For Landslide Detection Using Airborne Lidar Data, Jin-King Liu, Kuo-Hsin Hsiao, Peter Tian-Yuan Shih
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study analyzes multi-temporal LiDAR data of high accuracy and high resolution by installing a geomorphometric model for extracting landslides. First, two sets of LiDAR data were acquired for before and after a heavy rainfall event. The landslides which took place from 2005 to 2009 were classified automatically by satellite images, and subsequently the landslides were interpreted and edited manually. Geomorphometric parameters including slope, curvature, OHM, OHM roughness, and topographic wetness index were then extracted using stencils of landslide polygons overlaid on respective thematic maps derived from LiDAR, DEM and DSM. The ranges of every parameter were derived from the …

Evaluating The Uncertainty Of The Population Growth Parameter Estimates Of Larval Anchovy In The Southwestern Waters Of Taiwan Using Monte Carlo Simulations, Sheng-Ping Wang, Ming-An Lee, Wen-Yu Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To estimate the population growth parameter (maximum sustainable yield, carrying capacity, catchability, the ratio of initial biomass to carrying capacity and model shape parameter) of larval anchovy in the southwestern waters of Taiwan, a non-equilibrium production model was used to fit to historical catch data and standardized CPUE series. The results of standardized CPUE indicated that the sea surface temperature was the most effective variable for explaining the CPUE variation of larval anchovy abundance. This study also evaluated impact of the uncertainty associated with the catch and CPUE data on the model estimations using Monte Carlo simulations. Although the impacts …

Reading Han Fei As "Social Scientist": A Case-Study In "Historical Correspondence", Henrique Schneider
Comparative Philosophy
Han Fei was one of the main proponents of Legalism in Qin-era China. Although his works are mostly read from a historic perspective, the aim of this paper is to advance an interpretation of Han Fei as a social scientist. The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship that study society and its institutions as a consequence of human behavior. Methodologically, social sciences combine abstract approaches in model-building with empiric investigations, seeking to prove the functioning of the models. In a third step, social sciences also aim at providing policy advice. Han Fei can be read as operating similarly. …

“'They Was Things Past The Tellin’: A Reconsideration Of Sexuality And Memory In The Ex-Slave Narratives Of The Federal Writers’ Project", Lynn Cowles Wartberg
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 1936, Federal Writers’ Project (FWP) employees began interviewing formerly enslaved men and women, allowing them to speak publicly of their experiences under slavery. Defying racism and the repressions of Jim Crow, ex-slaves discussed intimate details of their lives. Many researchers considered these interviews unreliable, but if viewed through the lens of gender and analyzed using recent scholarship on slavery and sexuality, FWP interviews offer new insights into the lives of enslaved men and women. Using a small number of ex-slave interviews, most of them drawn from Louisiana, this thesis demonstrates the value of these oral histories for understanding the …
