Three-Dimensional Deformation And Stress Models Of The Death Valley And San Andreas Fault Zones, Cecilia Del Pardo Jan 2012

Three-Dimensional Deformation And Stress Models Of The Death Valley And San Andreas Fault Zones, Cecilia Del Pardo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Crustal deformation studies of tectonic motions have been the topic of many scientific investigations, as they can provide critical information about how tectonic structures shape and deform the Earth. While crustal deformation studies using observational data alone can provide a great deal of information about how the Earth is presently deforming, it is standard practice to implement mathematical and physics-based models to investigate the underlying causes of deformation in the crust. These models, constrained by geological, geodetic and seismic data, have successfully contributed key constraints of ongoing deformation processes and have provided predictions of past and future tectonic behavior of …

"The Strictest Smoking Ban In The Nation": A Retrospective Case Study Of The Political Factors That Facilitated And Inhibited The Passage Of El Paso's Clean Indoor Air Ordinance, Xochiquetzalli Gamboa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this report is to describe, using archival print media sources, the factors that influenced the passage of the controversial El Paso Clean Indoor Air Ordinance in 2001. Although public health professionals had had more than 50 years of evidence proving the dangers of tobacco consumption, very few municipalities were concerned with implementing bans of any type on indoor smoking in public places ten years ago.

El Paso, TX, made national history when it introduced and approved what was then called "the strictest smoking ban in the nation" (Falgoust, 2004). How was such a progressive measure enacted in …

Pre, Peri, And Post-Migration Perspectives Of Mexican National Refugees Related To Experiences Of Violence, Migration, And Resettlement Along The Texas-Mexico Border, Jana L. Mccallister

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

For the past six years, the war on drugs in Mexico has resulted in the out-migration of tens of thousands of Mexican nationals fleeing violence, many settling in El Paso, Texas. The historical context of being pulled to the U.S. for economic opportunity had changed. Mexican nationals were now refugees pushed out of their country for safety. Because the context of migration had changed, the close proximity and similarities between El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, and the availability of social support in the U.S., the experiences of this refugee cohort were unique. Because increasing numbers were seeking mental health …

Al-Shabaab's American Recruits: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Radicalization Pathways, Matthew Wade Richardson Jan 2012

Al-Shabaab's American Recruits: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Radicalization Pathways, Matthew Wade Richardson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

From 2005 to 2011, at least 41 Americans joined, or attempted to join, al-Shabaab, Somalia's preeminent terrorist organization. This thesis examines the radicalization process for al-Shabaab's American recruits by dividing the sample into two groups: non-Somali and Somali. The author employs causal flow diagramming as a means of visualizing each group's unique radicalization pathway. While most of the non-Somali recruits were motivated by political grievances and Salafism, most of the Somali recruits were motivated by identity conflict and nationalism. Considering al-Shabaab is both a religious and an ethno-nationalist terrorist organization, these results make sense. Radicalization within diaspora communities is a …

Vertical Deformation Along The San Andreas Fault, Garrett Thornton Jan 2012

Vertical Deformation Along The San Andreas Fault, Garrett Thornton

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

There have been numerous M 6+ earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault System (SAFS) (Schwartz et al., 1984) (Figure. 1.1) in the historical past. These rupture events have created millions of dollars worth of damage, and have been responsible for multiple lives lost. An improved understanding of the motions and crustal characteristics along the SAFS can lead to better hazard mitigation (Bakun et al., 2005). Horizontal crustal motions of the SAFS have been widely studied and applied to seismic hazard models (WGCEP, 2007), however vertical motions are not often utilized due to their complicated origin and sometimes large uncertainties. This …

Assessing Impulsive-Analytic Disposition: The Likelihood-To-Act Survey And Other Instruments, Kien H. Lim, Amy E. Wagler

Departmental Papers (Math)

The likelihood-to-act (LtA) survey is a 32-item instrument that measures impulsive and analytic dispositions in solving math problems. In this research report, we compare it to other instruments related to the impulsive-analytic construct such as Frederick’s Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) and the Barratt Impulsive Scale in terms of mean scores, Cronbach alpha values, and correlation values. Both LtA-Impulsive and LtA-Analytic subscales have acceptable reliabilities of 0.79 and 0.83 respectively. The LtA-Analytic and LtA-Difference (analytic-impulsive difference) correlated well with other the Need for Cognition subscale and CRT scores. The correlations involving LtA-Impulsive subscale were unexpected and call for further investigation.

Impulsive-Analytic Disposition In Mathematical Problem Solving: A Survey And A Mathematics Test, Kien H. Lim, Amy E. Wagler

Departmental Papers (Math)

The Likelihood-to-Act (LtA) survey and a mathematics test were used in this study to assess students’ impulsive-analytic disposition in the context of mathematical problem solving. The results obtained from these two instruments were compared to those obtained using two widely-used scales: Need for Cognition (NFC) and Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS). The exhibited correlations of the LtA scores with the NFC, BIS, and a math test provide evidence of the criterion validity of the analytic LtA items, and suggests further revision of the impulsive LtA items to improve the overall measurement validity of the LtA scale. Students LtA scores were found …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many studies have documented the growing fragility of a majority of the globe's ecosystems. Policymakers and resource managers often frame such ecosystem challenges as primarily about protecting natural systems in rural areas. However, that conception misses a key part of the story: the rapid growth of urbanizing areas. Home to more than 50 percent of the world's human population for the first time in modern history, urbanizing regions concentrate pressure on ecosystem services, which are necessary to sustain healthy urban living conditions and vibrant commerce. This dramatic urbanization presents both challenges and opportunities for novel ecosystem services management. A transdisciplinary …
